A PFLP suicide bomber fr. Askar r.c. nr. Nablus detonates a device in a Tel Aviv open-air market, killing 3 Israelis, wounding 32. The PFLP says that the bombing was carried out to warn Palestinian leaders against being “seduced into talking about ending the resistance and haggling over the national legitimate rights and principles of our people” now that Arafat is out of the West Bank. In the evening, IDF undercover units raid Nablus, assassinate Nablus AMB leader Majdi Mari (whom it attempted to assassinate on 9/15/04), AMB mbrs. In light of the 7/16 kidnappings, Arafat declares a state of emergency in Gaza; issues a decree for a “temporary restructuring” of the security forces into 3 branches: public security, with his distant cousin Musa Arafat as its new head; police, with Arafat loyalist Saeb Ajiz as its new head; general intelligence, with Amin al-Hindi, a loyalist increasingly critical of Arafat, maintaining leadership of the dept. Soon after, 1,000s of armed, masked Palestinians gather outside the PC headquarters in Gaza to protest the appointment of Musa Arafat, whom they say is corrupt, as cronyism. In continuing operations in Nablus, the IDF makes a predawn raid on a residential building, orders residents to evacuate, and immediately shoots the 1st 2 Palestinians who emerge—a Nablus University professor and his 16-yr.-old son—in an apparent botched assassination attempt. Later during the same maneuver, the IDF fatally shoots PFLP West Bank military cmdr. Yamun Faraj, senior PFLP cmdr. Amjad Hanani in an exchange of gunfire, in which an IDF officer is also killed, 3 IDF soldiers are wounded. In nearby Balata r.c., wanted Palestinian Wail Araysha is killed in a mysterious explosion in his car. In Gaza, 2 armed Palestinians open fire on, throw grenades at an IDF jeep, wounding 2 IDF soldiers; the soldiers return fire, killing both Palestinians. The IDF sends reinforcements into Rafah, fatally shoots 3-yr.-old Palestinian girl, bulldozes 311 dunams of agricultural land along Salah al-Din Street, demolishes 4 Palestinian homes completely, damages 5, finds its 1st smugglers’ tunnel since operations resumed on 5/17. The UN now estimates that as many as 60 Palestinian homes have been demolished since 5/17. Tanks continue to surround Tal al-Sultan; troops allow an UNRWA convoy to bring in emergency food supplies, water, blankets into the neighborhood, but bar private relief groups. In the West Bank, the IDF raids Yabad nr. Jenin, imposes a curfew, fires on residential areas. Nr. The IDF allows Palestinian workers into the Erez Industrial Zone for the 1st time since 3/15, but keeps the Erez crossing sealed; fatally shoots wanted AMB mbr. Jamil alTal in his home nr. Hebron in an apparent assassination; blows up a Palestinian home in Bidiyya nr. Qalqilya; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Bethlehem, Dahaysha r.c., Tulkarm r.c., and nr. Hebron. Israeli State Atty. Edna Arbel, Israel’s top prosecutor, recommends that Sharon be indicted on charges of accepting a bribe for his role in a 1999 deal under which prominent Israeli businessman and Likud activist David Appel paid about $100,000 to Sharon’s son Gilad Sharon (for “marketing advice”) and $580,000 to the Sharon family ranch in the Negev in exchange for Sharon (then FM) lobbying Greece in support of Appel’s project to build a Greek island resort; the project never came to fruition. Beersheba, killing 2 Israelis, escaping; the AMB, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine–General Command (PFLP–GC) claim responsibility. The IDF storms the al-Aqsa Mosque compound after Friday prayers, claiming to break up a demonstration there, firing rubber-coated steel bullets and percussion grenades, lightly injuring several Palestinians and sparking stone-throwing toward the Western Wall by Palestinian youths, which causes no injuries. The IDF also demolishes 84 Palestinian shops in Bayt Hanun, in an apparent move to expand the buffer zone around the Erez crossing; raids Husan, imposes a curfew, surrounds 3 mosques, fires tear gas inside, injuring 24 worshipers; fires on Palestinians who throw stones at soldiers at the end of peaceful demonstrations against the separation wall in Budrus, Qibya, causing no injuries; conducts arrest raids nr. The IDF also fires on a group of armed Palestinians nr. Jenin, killing 1 Palestinian, wounding 2; surrounds, fires tear gas into a secondary school nr. Hebron; occupies a Palestinian apartment building nr. Jenin as a military post, expelling the 32 residents; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Bethlehem, Nablus, Tulkarm r.c. and nr. Hebron, Ramallah; raids, searches dorms at al-Najah University in Nablus, arresting 3 students; arrests 6 Palestinian fishermen off the coast of Gaza for fishing in a prohibited area. The IDF raids the Rafah home of PFLP military cmdr. Ashraf Abu Libdeh, fatally shooting him in what may be an assassination, also firing on the surrounding area, wounding 21 bystanders, including 9 children, 2 women. In Silwan, East Jerusalem, 16 Jewish settler families under heavy Israeli police guard take over 16 Palestinian homes they claim to have purchased fr. residents, doubling Silwan’s settler population; settlers have taken over a total of 50 homes, schools, archeological sites in the area. An ailing 8-yr.-old Palestinian boy fr. Habla village dies en route to the hospital when no IDF soldiers are present to allow his passage through the separation wall to reach a Qalqilya hospital 3 km away, forcing his ambulance to drive 30 km around the wall to reach the hospital. The Sharon admin. announces it will shorten the planned route of the separation wall to reduce the hardship on Palestinians, gain U.S. support for the project. The IDF also fires live ammunition at some 200 Israeli, Palestinian, international peace activists staging a nonviolent protest along the separation wall nr. Qalqilya, wounding 1 Israeli (who had just finished 3 yrs. IDF service), 1 American; fires tear gas at another group of protesters at the separation wall west of Ramallah; fires on a funeral process in nr. Soon after, a PFLP suicide bomber detonates a device at a bus stop in Tel Aviv, killing 4 IDF soldiers, 1 Israeli civilian, wounding 15 Israelis; the PFLP says the attack is in retaliation for the IDF assassination of 2 PFLP mbrs. on 12/18. The IDF makes a major raid into Nablus in a campaign against the “developing terrorist infrastructure” there, killing 4 Palestinians, including senior PFLP mbrs. In a major policy address given to the annual Herzliya Conference on Israeli strength and security, Sharon threatens that if Palestinians do not show progress on the road map soon, he would end negotiations and unilaterally define Israel’s “security lines,” taking large areas of the West Bank, keeping all of Jerusalem, and removing a number of Jewish settlements.
