In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in several cities; Palestinians were protesting the U.S. administration’s announcement that it no longer considers Israeli settlements in contradiction to international law on 11/18. 82 Palestinians received treatment for tear gas and smoke inhalation and rubber-coated bullet wounds in al-Bireh, Bethlehem, Huwwara, Abu Dis, Ramallah, Hebron, and Tulkarm. Separately, Israeli forces violently dispersed protesters in Silat al-Dahir and Tulkarm, who were demonstrating because of the death of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail who died of cancer. Israeli forces also demolished a Palestinian-owned house in Qalandia and delivered a demolition notice for a house in Bayt Awa. Israeli settlers vandalized cars and buildings in al-Jaba‘, slashing tires and writing racist graffiti. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished 4 Palestinian-owned sheep barns in Jabal Mukabir. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles from Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, several Palestinians suffered tear-gas related injuries during clashes with Israeli forces at a checkpoint in al-Bireh near Ramallah. 2 Palestinians were arrested at a flying checkpoint south of Bethlehem. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed a protest in front of the Hadassah Hospital in solidarity with a Palestinian prisoner who had been tortured by Israeli interrogators. 2 protesters were arrested and there were reports of beatings. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles off the shore of Bayt Lahiya. In Israel, 1 Palestinian citizen of Israel was killed and 2 others injured in Maj al-Krum. Elsewhere, in Kafr Kana, around 2,000 Palestinians marched to mark the anniversary of 13 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in 2000. Israeli settlers with military escort raided an archeological site in Sabastiyya and Joseph’s Tomb in Balata. In East Jerusalem, the Israeli magistrate court ordered the eviction of a Palestinian family of 13 from their home in Silwan. The lawsuit was brought by the settler organizations Ateret Cohanim and Elad. 28 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Issawiyya and Silwan. A court in Jerusalem upheld the Israeli Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories decision not to allow the majority of players and staff of the soccer team Khadamat Rafah travel permits to the West Bank for a match in the Palestinian soccer cup championship. The match was originally scheduled for 7/3, but the players and staff had not been able to obtain the permits to travel to the West Bank for the match for more than 2 months. In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 13 Palestinians in late-night raids in and around Far‘un, Jenin, Bethlehem, Hebron, Tulkarm, Nablus, and Qalqilya. Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished 2 greenhouses near Bethlehem and a residential structure under construction in Khirbat Jabara south of Tulkarm. Israeli forces also sealed off a road between al-Tuwwana and al-Karmel east of Yatta. In East Jerusalem, a day after the Israeli supreme court rejected local residents’ appeal to protect their East Jerusalem homes from demolition, Israeli forces began demolishing the 60 residential structures housing 500 Palestinians. The Israeli ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that Israel would not start annexing parts of the West Bank until the Trump administration’s peace plan is unveiled. U.S. president Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner told a group of ambassadors that the peace plan will not be released until after the end of Ramadan in early June. The hunger strike organized by Palestinian prisoners in Israel ended after 8 days when the Israeli Prison Service (IPS) agreed to install public phones, allowing prisoners to make calls to relatives up to 3 times a week. As citizens of Israel went to vote in the Israeli general elections, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party handed out around 1,200 small cameras to Israeli right-wing activists so that they could film at polling stations in predominantly Palestinian areas of Israel to intimidate Palestinian voters. Israeli police confiscated dozens of these cameras at polling stations. The Hadash-Ta’al list filed an urgent complaint to the Central Elections Committee to have the cameras removed immediately. In the West Bank, an Israeli settler shot and killed a 23-year-old Palestinian at the Huwwara checkpoint. A 22-year-old was taken to a hospital in Nablus for treatment of a gun wound sustained in the same incident. Eyewitnesses say that the settler blocked the road with his truck and shot at the 2 Palestinians. The settler claims that he was attacked by the 23-year-old. Separately, several Palestinian hikers were injured and 7 were arrested when Israeli forces attacked them while hiking a trail near ‘Ayn al-Hilwa in the West Bank. At night, hundreds of Israeli settlers and their military escort harassed residents of the West Bank village of Awarta. In Gaza, Israeli forces fired a missile at Palestinian teens for the 2d day. The missile hit Gaza City without causing injuries or damage. Israeli forces claimed that the teens were firing incendiary balloons. Separately, Israeli forces claimed that it had detonated several explosive devices thrown at the Gaza fence on 3/30. Israeli forces also conducted incursions for land levelling near al-Bureij refugee camp in Gaza. Meanwhile, off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces shot at Palestinian fishermen inside of the permitted fishing zone. No injuries were reported. Later, Israeli forces shot live ammunition at 3 Palestinians who allegedly attempted to cross into Israel from Gaza. All 3 were taken to a hospital in Israel. A Palestinian prisoner dies in Israeli custody. The Palestinian Prisoners and Former Prisoners’ Affairs Committee accuses the Israel Prison Service of medical negligence. The prisoner, Faris Baroud, was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to life in prison for killing an Israeli and injuring 3 others. The U.S. blocks the UN Security Council from issuing a statement condemning Israel’s 1/28 decision not to renew the mandate of the Temporary International Presence in Hebron (TIPH).
