Haaretz reported that 6 serious complaints were recently filed to the Israeli ministry of justice by Palestinians against East Jerusalem police officers and only 1 indictment has been filed against 1 police officer. 1 case involved 1 Palestinian minor who was taken to a bathroom and told to strip naked before he was beaten while lying handcuffed on the floor. The police officers allegedly further threatened him with rape. The minor was never charged with any crime or given a reason for his arrest or abuse by the Israeli forces. Another complaint was filed by the prominent activist Abu Hummus family in Isawiya that has been harassed by Israeli police because of their activism, including arbitrary arrests and late-night raids. The Finnish Christian missionary group Felm said it had stopped funding Defense for Children International-Palestine because of Israel’s announcement on 10/22 that the organization is 1 of 6 to be declared a terrorist organization. Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah rejected a “compromise” deal offered by the Israeli supreme court to allow them to stay in their homes for a minimum of 15 years, but forfeiting their ownership claims to the properties to the Israeli settler organization Nahalot Shimon and paying the organization rent. The Supreme Court will now have to rule on the residents’ appeals against eviction. In Israel, 1 Palestinian Israeli man was shot dead in Ba’ana, marking the 100th member of the Palestinian Israeli community to be killed in what is described as intra-communal violence in 2021. Some Palestinians in Israel have complained that Israeli police are uninterested in solving murders in the community. The issue is said to be addressed in the upcoming Israeli budget negotiations as more money will be allocated to policing in Palestinian towns and cities. The Israeli police solve 71% of murders in the Jewish community, but only 23% within the Palestinian communities in Israel. 83 of the 100 Palestinians killed had died in cases that involved firearms. It was reported that Chairman Meeks had come under significant pressure after saying he would review the sale. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers attacked 2 Palestinian minors in Issawiyya; no serious physical injuries were reported. Israeli forces violently dispersed protests in Bayt Hanina, leading to clashes, and arrested 4 Palestinians. Israeli forces also briefly dispersed Palestinians celebrating by the Damascus Gate but allowed the celebrations to carry on shortly after. 2 Palestinians were charged with hate crimes after throwing coffee on an Israeli settler and putting a video of the incident on social media on 4/22. In Gaza, Israel closed the Gaza fishing zone, citing 3 days of rocket fire toward Israel; Israel claimed that 4 Israelis were injured due to the rocket fire, all from tripping while seeking shelter. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting at the Gaza fence for the 3d day in a row, leading to tear-gas related injuries. 2 Palestinians were arrested for crossing into Israel. Israeli member of Knesset, former minister, and leader of HaTzionut HaDatit (Religious Zionist Party) Bezalel Smotrich threatened that “Arabs are citizens of Israel, for now at least, and they have representatives at the Knesset, for now at least” during a party meeting.
