In the West Bank, Israeli forces raided Zeita, leading to the evacuation of students from an elementary school. Israeli forces also summoned the father and brother of 1 of the Palestinian prisoners who escaped from an Israeli prison (see below). 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around al-Am‘ari refugee camp, Surda, Ramallah, Jalazun refugee camp, Fahma, and Jaba‘. 6 Palestinian prisoners, including the former al-Aqsa Martyr Brigade leader Zakaria Zubeidi, escaped Gilboa prison in Northern Israel near the West Bank, using a tunnel dug over a period of at least 10 months. All other prisoners in the Gilboa Prison were relocated to other prisons as Israeli authorities investigated the flaws in the prison structure that facilitated the escape. The Israeli prison service also restricted yard exercise time from 4 hours to 1 hour a day as a collective punishment. In Israel, Israeli protesters demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clashed with police in several places throughout Israel. 38 people were arrested and hundreds were fined as the Israeli government had sought to ban the protests, citing COVID-19 transmission concerns. After closing it indefinitely on 9/5, the Israeli authorities partially re-open the Erez border crossing, allowing a small number of humanitarian cases, journalists, and Palestinians from the West Bank into Gaza. Defense Minister Lieberman says the crossing will remain closed until at least 9/13. Separately, the Israeli authorities announce that all crossings in and out of Gaza and the West Bank are to be closed from midnight on 9/8 through midnight on 9/11 around the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah. U.S. president Donald Trump says that he does not plan to resume any aid for the Palestinians until they begin negotiations with Israel. “The U.S. was paying them tremendous amounts of money,” he says, in a call with U.S.-Jewish leaders. “And I say, ‘You’ll get money, but we’re not paying until you make a deal. If you don’t make a deal, we’re not paying.” Trump has slashed almost all U.S. aid for the Palestinians, including that which is traditionally directed through UNRWA, since 1/2018. Hamas and Fatah officials resume talks on a possible national reconciliation agreement under the oversight of Egyptian intelligence officials in Cairo. They discuss ways that the PA can effectively administrate in Gaza, including the operation of the border crossings and issues related to the economy and security.
