In the West Bank, Israeli forces raided Kafr Qaddum, injuring 3 Palestinians with baton rounds and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian at a checkpoint near al-Bireh, saying he had thrown stones at a settler vehicle. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered a demolition notice for 1 mosque in Arab ar-Ramadin. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian man shot by Israeli police with a baton round to his head on 4/22 at the Haram al-Sharif compound died of his injuries. 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Sur Baher, displacing 5. Rulers of the UAE appointed Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan as the new president of the UAE. Mohammed bin Zayed had served as the de facto ruler of the UAE after his half-brother, President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan, suffered a stroke in 2014. After a wk.'s delay, Bush gives a major speech outlining the new U.S. policy toward the peace process. Without mentioning Israel's military escalations, Bush says in effect that the Palestinians must remove Arafat and create a Western-style democracy before the peace process can move forward. The U.S. halts direct dealings with Arafat. Bush's decision to call for Arafat's ouster was reportedly influenced heavily by an Israeli intelligence report he received last wk. (uncorroborated by the CIA) claiming that Arafat authorized a $20,000 payment to the AMB, which carried out the 6/19 suicide bombing. Occupied Palestine/Israel: Troops use tear gas to break up group of stone-throwing demonstrators in Ramallah; use tear gas and live ammunition against protestors blockading streets in Rafah, Khan Yunis, and refugee camps in the Gaza Strip, wounding at least 3 [FJ 2/27].

Arab World: Police in S. Beirut report "de facto truce" around Burj al-Barajinah and Shatila refugee camps [LAT 2/20].

Casualties:

54 Palestinian middle class families from northeast Sidon, 15 families from central Sidon, 73 families of orchard workers in Adloun, 8 families from village of Kaddousieh have fled to Ain el-Hilweh camp in past week in response to Phalangist campaign of intimidation.
