Occupied Palestine/Israel: A 50-year-old Palestinian dies while under Israeli detention [FJ 8/28]. Israeli soldiers shoot, kill 29-year-old Palestinian in Zawiya [NYT 8/ 26].

Arab World: Israeli troops ambush, kill 5 Hizballah fighters insouth Lebanon. Six Israeli soldiers are wounded. The troops were on a search-and-destroy mission. According to the army command the clash was followed by artillery exchanges [WP 8/ 25].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Rabbi Moshe Levinger announces end of 3-mo. "protest vigil" outside Dheisheh camp [JP 2/19]. Trial of David Ben-Shimol [charged with 10/84 rocket attack on Arab bus, earlier bombing of E. Jerusalem cafe] begins in Jerusalem [JP 2/19]. IDF court in Ramallah orders 7 Dheisheh youths arrested 1/31 detained additional 50 days [FJ 2/22].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Deposed Ramallah mayor Karim Khalaf supports 2/11 Arafat-Hussein accord [deposed Nablus mayor Bassam al-Shak'a, Abna' al-Balad movement oppose agreement] [FJ 2/22]. 25 women prisoners end hunger strike [begun 2/12] at Neve Tertza prison after receiving promises of better treatment [FJ 2/22].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli bus stoned near al-Amari camp; one passenger injured; authorities close furniture shop in vicinity [JP 2/18]. After High Court of Justice refuses 2 stays of deportation, authorities deport Fateh figure 'Abd al-'Aziz Shahin to Lebanon [imprisoned in 1967 for "armed infiltration;" released in 1982, he was forced to live incommunicado in Dahaniya, Gaza strip until his deportation] [JP 2/18, FJ 2/22].

Arab World: Action in S. Lebanon: assassinations of collaborators continue in wake of Israeli withdrawal from Sidon area [NYT 2/18]. Roadside bomb kills IDF soldier, wounds 3, in al-Bazouriya UP 2/18]. IDF soldier killed in ambush near Nabatiya [WP 2/19].

Military Action:

Israel, alleging cease-fire violations by Syrians and PLO, attacks on both fronts with artillery and air strikes (ordered following ambush deaths of 5 IDF soldiers near Mansura in the Bekaa); jets bomb PLO artillery emplacements near the stadium and airport following wounding of IDF soldier near airport; PLO estimates 6 people killed or wounded in the attacks; PLO operates behind Syrian lines in the eastern Bekaa; 5 IDF wounded in machinegun attack near Tyre; bombs dropped after 30 minutes of mock attacks in Fakhani quarter and camps of Burj al-Barajneh, Sabra and Shatila, as well as the stadium and the neighborhood of Ramlet el-Baida; IDF launches air and land attacks along entire cease-fire line in eastern Lebanon (jets strike barracks near Baalbek, several Syrian-controlled villages).

Israel/ Occupied Territories: Begin summons Cabinet for special meeting to discuss Lewis report; retaliatory measures reportedly agreed on at the meeting; IDF spokesman claims 75 PLO violations of the cease-fire in the past 3 weeks, claims Syrians try to advance their lines; denies final Israel assault on Beirut.

Arab Governments: Attacks come as Habib undertakes a weeklong mission to Syria, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and possibly other Arab nations to get them to accept PLO fighters from Beirut; King Hussein of Jordan meets UK Prime Minister Thatcher in London.
