Islamic Jihad fires 4 mortars at Gaza’s Morag settlement, causing no damage or injuries. Hamas fires 3 Qassam rockets at Sederot; 2 hit inside Gaza, causing no damage or injuries; the 3d does not fire. Jewish settlers occupy a 3-story Palestinian building nr. the site of beachfront buildings demolished by the IDF on 6/26, declare establishment of a new unauthorized settlement outpost, Tal Yam. Jewish settlers fr. Efrat occupy a Palestinian home nr. the s. entrance to Bethlehem, are evicted by the IDF. Jewish settlers fr. Kiryat Arba throw stones, Molotov cocktails at a house and farm, causing damage, burning several trees. As many as 40,000 Israeli motorists protesting the government’s disengagement plans pull over to the side of the road and pause for 15 mins. during rush hour, creating traffic tie-ups. In response to the 2 Palestinian deaths on 2/9, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the PRCs fire 35 mortars and 18 rockets at Gush Katif, Morag, Neve Dekalim settlements, causing minor damage to 1 house and no injuries, threatening the Israeli-Palestinian truce. The IDF fires on a Palestinian car that attempts to bypass a roadblock, causing the car to crash, killing the Palestinian driver; issues military orders confiscating 150 d. of Bayt Hanina land, 50 d. of Shu‘fat land for construction of the separation wall around Jerusalem. Palestinian gunmen aligned with a senior Fatah official break into a PA prison in central Gaza, fatally shoot 3 Palestinians in retaliation for the slaying of the official’s brother. In Gaza, 3 Palestinian gunmen fr. the Abu Rish Brigades (a Fatah offshoot), Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian Resistance Comms. (PRC) attack an IDF post outside Morag, fatally shooting 3 IDF soldiers before 2 are shot dead; 1 escapes, wounds an Israeli journalist, is then shot dead. The IDF sends troops into Nablus and surrounding camps, fires on residential areas, blows up 2 Palestinian homes; fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis, Rafah; fires rubber bullets at Palestinian, international peace activists staging a nonviolent protest against the separation wall outside Hebron; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Hebron and Nablus, and in al-‘Aza, Bethlehem, Jenin town and r.c., al-Khadir, al-Mughraqa; demolishes 2 Palestinian homes in al-Mughraqa; bulldozes 6 Palestinian homes, 40 d. of agricultural land in Khan Yunis. The IDF attempts to assassinate, wounds Hamas political leader and chief spokesman ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Rantisi, firing missiles at his car as he drives through Shati‘ r.c., killing a bodyguard and a Palestinian woman walking nearby, wounding 27. In a rare acknowledgment, Israel confirms it targeted Rantisi, saying it took the decision after Rantisi called off Hamas cease-fire talks with the PA. Later in the day, IDF helicopters fire missiles at a 2d car in Jabaliya, allegedly targeting 2 Palestinians who fired 5 Qassam rockets at Sederot earlier, causing no damage or injuries; 3 Palestinian bystanders are killed, 30 (including the 2 targets) are wounded. Abbas condemns the Rantisi attack as a “terrorist attack in the full meaning of the word,” saying it was aimed at sabotaging the road map; Hamas says it is a “declaration of war,” vows to “commit operations that will shake Israel.” The IDF also fatally shoots wanted Palestinian Issam Ibrahim in Jenin in what may be an assassination; fatally shoots 2 Palestinians in s.
