Occupied Palestine/Israel: 2 IDF officers are severely injured in firebomb attack in the village of Bayt 'Umar; the village is placed under curfew [NYT 6/16]. Curfews are issued for 11 locations in the occupied territories [FJ 6/19]. Israel announces the establishment of a new police team to combat the outbreak of brush and forest fires [CSM 6/15]. Clashes are reported in Nablus, Bayt Furik, Bayt Dajan, 'Azmut, Salim, and throughout the Gaza Strip [FJ 6/19].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel and Norway tentatively reach agreement whereby Norway will be allowed to inspect heavy water it sold to Israel in 1959 [WSJ 6/13]. Israel deports Palestinian activist Mubarak 'Awad [WP 6/14].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Outside Ramallah 43-year-old Palestinian is found dead of a bullet wound [WP 6/14, FJ 6/19]. Chairman of the Jewish National Fund reports 25,000 acres of forest and grasslands have recently been destroyed by fires [LAT 6/13]. D. M. Rabin announces that Israeli civilians may shoot on sight any Palestinians "who are seen holding firebombs in their hands" [NYT 6/14]. Clashes are reported in Beach, Burayj, Dayr al-Balah, and Rafah camps [FJ 6/19].

Arab World: Rival PLO factions meet in Damascus to end inter-Palestinian clashes south of Beirut in the Shatila and Burj al-Barajinah camps. Five people have been killed in recent fighting [NYT 6/14].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Sec. of State Shultz warns that Israeli occupation of W. Bank is a "dead-end street" and continues to push his plan to the Israelis [LAT, 6/6, NYT 6/6]. Israel's Supreme Court upholds deportationrder of Mubarak 'Awad [LAT 6/6]. A strike is observed in the occupied territories [FJ 6/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrations are held in at least 8 towns and refugee camps; 7 Palestinians are beaten by soldiers. The IDF had no reports of disturbances [LAT 6/6].

Other Countries: On speaking tour in the U.S. Major-General Amram Mitzna, military commander of the Central Region (W. Bank), predicts an increase in violence in the occupied territories [LAT 6/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israelis reopen elementary schools in W. Bank; nearly 200,000 children return to class. Some schools that have been used by Israeli soldiers have been vandalized [WP 5/14]. Two Israeli women are charged with belonging to the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine. The 2 have been held for over a month without charge [WP 5/14]. Palestinian American Mubarak 'Awad announces that if he is expelled from Israel he will convert to Judaism and return to Israel under the Law of Return [NYT 5/24].

Military

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Settlers raid Balatah camp shooting live ammunition and injuring several Palestinians [FJ 5/29]. In Bayt Kahil 3 Arab homes are destroyed by authorities claiming they were built without permits [FJ 5/29]. In jabalya UNWRA official is shot in the leg [FJ 5/29].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli High Court denies government request to deport Mubarak 'Awad before hearing his appeal, but says he must remain in jail until hearing [WP, CSM 5/10]. Govemment drops charges that 'Awad had organized or participated in violence and that Palestinian Center for the Study of Non-Violence was financed by PLO [WP 5/10]. Chaim Herzog is sworn in for 2d 5-year term as president [MET 5/19]. Israeli authorities seize 40 taxis operating between Jerusalem and Ramallah on charges that owners owe taxes [FJ 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Duhayshah refugee camp, Palestinian bystander is killed when Israeli troops open fire on demonstrators; during funeral, mourners clash again with soldiers. Camp is ordered under curfew. At least 3 Palestinians are wounded during other W. Bank clashes. In Gaza Strip, 2 Palestinians are severely beaten by soldiers. Curfew is imposed in Jabalya refugee camp [WP 5/10].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli High Court delays deportation of Palestinian activist Mubarak 'Awad pending his appeal hearing. Reports indicate 'Awad has been on hunger strike since his arrest 5/5 [WP 5/9]. Authorities begin cutting off electricity to Palestinian villages which have not paid their bills; water is cut off in Attil village near Tulkarm and Nablus-area villages of Bidiya and Yutma [FJ 5/15].

Arab World: Mahmud 'Abbas (Abu Mazin) leaves Amman after 2 days of talks with Jordanian officials [FJ 5/15].

Other Countries: F.M. Peres meets with senior Hungarian officials in Budapest [WP 5/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Army imposes curfews in Jabalya camp and 'Abasan village in Gaza Strip following protests. Demonstrators throw stones in Ramallah and Jenin [FJ 5/15].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Ma'ariv survey of 1,152 Israelis reveals support for Likud party has risen from 33% in January to 39% in April, while support for Labor party has fallen from 46% in January to 38% in April [NYT 5/8]. Military renews order closing W. Bank schools [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: In Shatila refugee camp, south of Beirut, fighting continues between Fateh and dissident commandos; PLO spokesman reports at least 5 are killed and 25 wounded [WP 5/7; MET 5/19]. Fateh fighters defeat dissidents in 'Ayn al-Hilwah refugee camp [WP 5/7].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In field between W. Bank village of Turmus Ayah and Jewish settlement of Shillo, Jewish settler shoots Palestinian shepherd to death, seriously wounds another; settlers allege shepherds threw stones. Army orders all stores in W. Bank closed for 3 days as punishment for 5/4 commercial strike. Jerusalem police detain Ilyas Zananiri, managing editor of Palestine Press Service and Arabic edition of al-Awdah [LAT 5/6]. Mubarak 'Awad, Palestinian American activist, is arrested and ordered deported [WP 5/7].

Other Countries: Trans Technology, U.S. tear gas manufacturer, says it will stop its sales to Israel [WP 5/9].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Scattered demonstrations are reported in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Soldiers prevent merchants from opening shops in moming in Ramallah; military orders all stores in occupied territories closed during moming. Curfew continues in Balatah refugee camp [FJ 5/8].

Arab World: In final stage of Israel's "Operation Law and Order," SLA troops destroy about 60 houses in S. Lebanon village of Maydun [LAT 5/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: General strike continues in occupied territories. Def. Min. Rabin threatens to introduce additional sanctions in W. Bank and Gaza Strip. Israeli authorities close Hebron National Bus Co. for 1 week for honoring strike. Palestinian American political activist Mubarak 'Awad is arrested in Jerusalem on charges of organizing an illegal demonstration [WP 3/17]. Israel cuts phone lines to W. Bank, Gaza Strip [NYT 3/17]. Jews from Teqoa settlement attack Bethlehem-area village of Za'tara after demonstration; settlers bulldoze walls, damage water pipes, and smash windows of houses and cars before troops intervene [FJ 3/20].

Other Countries: Pres. Reagan stresses that U.S. will not change or abandon peace proposals in talks with Israeli p.m. Shamir [CSM, WP 3/17]. Shamir suggests ceremonial opening for Arab-Israeli peace talks at U.S. -Soviet summit in Moscow [LAT 3/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Demonstrators in Tulkarm bum tires, block roads, and throw rocks at soldiers; troops respond with tear gas, rubber bullets, and live ammunition, killing 3 and wounding at least 12. Palestinian is shot dead in West Bank village of Ya'bad [WP 3/171. Violent clashes are also reported in Gaza Strip's Khan Yunis and Nusayrat camps, Bethlehem's Duhayshah camp, Jalazun camp, and Jib village, near Ramallah [NYT 3/17]. Arab World: In Cairo, about 200 Egyptian lawyers burn Israeli flag; 'Ayn Shams University students demonstrate against Israeli tactics in occupied territories [LAT 1/6].

Other Countries: UN Security Council unanimously approves resolution condemning Israel's plan to deport 9 Palestinians from occupied territories [WP, NYT 1/6]. In Pakistan, 5 Palestinians on trial for hijacking Pan American airliner in 1986 state they intended to release passengers, blow up plane over Israel after securing release of Palestinian prisoners [WP, LAT 1/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Khan Yunis, supporters of Hasan Ghanim Abu Shaqra, Muslim leader ordered deported by Israel, throw stones, burn tires. Israeli troops respond with water cannon, tear gas, then open fire when demonstrators try to march from Abu Shaqra's home to mosque; 1 demonstrator is killed, 4 others wounded. In separate Khan Yunis clash, soldiers shoot, wound 3 protesters; 1 other is wounded in Gaza City confrontation. Palestine Press Service reports another Palestinian killed in the Khan Yunis clashes. Scattered violence is reported in East Jerusalem and W. Bank towns of Bethlehem, Bir Zeit, Tulkarm, and Qalqiliyyah [NYT, WP 1/6]. Tulkarm and 'Azzah refugee camps are placed under curfew following protests. Women demonstrating in front of Nablus military court are attacked by Israeli soldiers [FJ 1/10].

In Negev town of Rahat, 200 Israeli border guards and "green patrol" members remove tent used as mosque, confiscate Qur'ans and other religious books [Fl 12/13]. MK 'Abd al-Wahab Darawshah presents defense minister with petition signed by 22 MKs protesting planned deportation of Palestinian activist Mubarak 'Awad [FJ 12/13]. Israeli police and border guards force E. Jerusalem merchants, striking insupport of JEC, to open shops [Fl 12/13]. Israeli authorities revoke residence papers of Mubarak 'Awad, Palestinian-American who is director of Jerusalem's Palestine Center for the Study of Nonviolence [NYT 9/29]. Al-Sha'b reports Palestinians from Jenin area have filed protests against Israeli plan to expel 'Abd al-Nasir Abu 'Aziz when he is released after 5-years imprisonment [FJ 10/4].
