In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalize a Palestinian home in Taybeh. Israeli forces demolish 2 homes in Al Maniya, displacing 8 people, and 2 agricultural structures and an industrial structure in Nabi Ilyas. Israeli forces also seize a home in al-Khader, designating its roof as an observation point. Palestinians mark the new year with a large rally in Ramallah in solidarity with Gaza. 32 Palestinians are arrested during raids in and around Qatanna, Nablus, Hebron, Bethlehem, Tulkarm, and Ramallah. In Gaza, Israeli forces bomb Maghazi, Dayr al-Balah, Khan Yunis, Jabalia refugee camp, Gaza City, Nuseirat refugee camp, and al-Zaytun, killing at least 179 people, including 15 in a home in Maghazi and 15 in a home in Dayr al-Balah. More than 21,978 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 8,800 children and 6,300 women, and around 57,697 have been injured since 10/7. The Israeli Supreme Court overturns the Israeli government’s decision from July 2023 to remove the “reasonableness” clause, which allows the court to overturn government decisions it deems unconstitutional. Israeli soldiers were present at the killing, but eyewitnesses say the shots were fired by Israeli settlers. Israeli forces shot and injured 3 Palestinians at a checkpoint near Nablus, claiming that the Palestinians had opened fire at Israeli soldiers at the checkpoint. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 11 with baton rounds and others with tear gas. 5 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Kafr Qalil, Tell, Hebron, and al-Maniya. The Ramallah-based group Lawyers for Justice said that the PA had arrested at least 94 people for political reasons in the past 2 months. None of the people arrested were charged with any offenses and most were released within days. A representative for Lawyers for Justice said the latest arrest campaign is the biggest since 2012 and that detainees have reported maltreatment and torture. The UN Committee against Torture issued findings from its review of the State of Palestine, saying it was “seriously concerned about the causalities caused by the excessive use of force, particularly the use of lethal weapons by security forces and unidentified armed elements during demonstrations on the postponement of national elections in April 2021 and about Nizar Banat’s death in custody in June 2021.” It also urged the PA to investigate allegations of torture and ill treatment by security forces and intelligence officers in prison and jail facilities in the West Bank and Gaza. The Israeli defense ministry released transcripts from the trial related to the 1956 Israeli massacre of Palestinians in Kafr Qasem. In the transcript, a commander is recorded saying that his superior, Colonel Issachar Shadmi, had told him that it would be “desirable that there be some fatalities” in Kafr Qasem. The commander also said that he had been ordered to kill Palestinians violating the curfew, even if he believed that they had not been informed of the curfew. On the 2d day of the 31st session of the PLO Central Council, Rawhi Fattouh was elected speaker of the National Council, replacing Salim Zanoun, who retired. Hussein al-Sheikh was appointed as a PLO negotiator with Israel and the U.S. Al-Sheikh was also 1 of 3 new members elected to the PLO executive committee. Hamas called the appointments “illegal” and said they lacked support from the national consensus. The Knesset approved the 1st of 3 votes of the citizenship law that would prevent family reunifications of Palestinians married to Israeli citizens. Meretz and United Arab List boycotted the vote. The German news outlet Deutsche Welle fired 5 Palestinian and Lebanese employees, saying the had posted anti-Semitic content on social media. The social media posts in question were largely criticism of Israel and not targeting Jewish people. Deutsche Welle was criticized for trying to silence criticism of Israel.
