Elsewhere in the oPt, the IDF bars Palestinians from the Beit Horon settlement where 2 Palestinians attacked Israeli settlers on 1/25; locks down, for the 2d day in a row, nearby Bayt ‘Ur al-Tahta village where 1 of the alleged attackers was from. IDF troops conduct latenight raids and house searches in 2 villages nr. Jenin, arresting 2 Palestinians and issuing an arrest summons to 1; patrol in 5 villages nr. Hebron. In the Beit Horon settlement nr. Ramallah, a settlement security guard shoots and kills 2 Palestinians after they allegedly stab 2 Israeli settlers, critically injuring both (1 will succumb to her injuries on 1/26). The Israeli press reports that the planning and building comm. of Israel’s Civil Admin. approved plans for the construction of 153 new settler residences in the West Bank last week, including 65 nr. Ariel; 28 in Carmel, s. of Hebron; and 60 in the Gush Etzion settlement bloc. The Israeli govt. does not confirm the announcement. Israeli PM Netanyahu confirms that his govt. will allow the settlers who were forcibly evicted from 2 homes in c. Hebron on 1/22 to return once their proper paperwork is in order. Some in the Israeli press claim that the youth was intending to throw the bomb at a nearby Israeli police base. Meanwhile, Israeli forces conduct raids and house searches in 3 areas nr. Hebron and Dahaysha r.c. nr. Bethlehem, arresting 5 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 4; patrol in 5 villages nr. Ramallah. They also patrol in Silwan, East Jerusalem, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths (1 Palestinian is injured and another is assaulted and arrested). The organization Physicians for Human Rights–Israel, which has been working on the case of Palestinian hunger striker al-Qiq, requests that the Israeli Prison Service appoints an independent physician to assess his condition. A Palestinian citizen of Israel opens fire in a Tel Aviv pub, killing 2 and injuring 7. The attacker flees and, according to Israeli police on 1/4, kills a 3d Israeli civilian, a taxi driver, in n. Tel Aviv. (The suspect will be killed in a shootout in n. Israel on 1/8.) In the West Bank, Israeli authorities return to their families the bodies of 23 Palestinians killed recently by the IDF, including 17 to the Hebron area. They also return to a Palestinian transportation company in Nablus 11 buses confiscated since 10/1 for carrying Palestinian youths to protests.
