The Palestine Chronology

In the West Bank, Israeli forces claimed to have found an explosive device near Nablus. Israeli forces also demolished a Palestinian-owned house and restaurant in Bayt Jala near Bethlehem. 25 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Abu Dis, Nablus, Jenin, and Salfit. In Gaza, 3 rockets were launched toward Israel, causing no damage. Later, Israel struck targets east of Bayt Lahiya allegedly belonging to Hamas; damage was reported but no injuries. Hamas later denied responsibility for the rockets launched. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli forces opened fired on Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles from the shore of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced via Twitter that 300 new settlement units in the Dolev settlement would be sent for approval to the Planning Committee. Prime Minister Netanyahu also announced that Israel was cutting allowed oil imports to Gaza by 50% after rockets were fired at Israel. (HA, Twitter, WAFA 8/26)

It was reported by the Lebanese state-run media outlet National News Agency that Israel attacked a base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command with 3 missiles in Qusaya in Northern Lebanon, causing damage to structures but no injuries. Lebanon’s president Michel Aoun also said of the Israeli strike against Hezbollah in Beirut on 8/25 that it was a declaration of war on Lebanon. (AJ, BBC, REU, WAFA 8/26; HA 8/27)

Iraqi president Barham Salih and prime minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi condemned Israel’s attack on Iraqi groups on 8/25, calling it an “attack on Iraqi sovereignty.” The U.S. Department of Defense issued a statement opposing Israel’s attacks in Iraq, saying that the U.S. supports Iraqi sovereignty and opposes “external actors” operating in Iraq. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers wrote racist graffiti and slashed tires on 5 Palestinian-owned vehicles in Haris near Salfit. Israeli forces handed demolition notices for some 20 Palestinian-owned structures in Qalandia and demolished a water well in the northern Jordan Valley. Israeli forces arrested 4 Palestinians, including a 13-year old girl, at the Allenby bridge crossing, in Qalqilya and Salfit. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished a building in Bayt Hanina. Israeli forces also arrested 4 Palestinians during late-night raids in Shu‘fat refugee camp. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished a water line and irrigation network in ‘Ayn al-Bayda in the Jordan Valley. Israeli forces also arrested 7 Palestinians during raids in and around Bethlehem and Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested near Bab al-Rahma on the Haram al-Sharif compound. It was reported that he was injured and hospitalized during the arrest. In Gaza, Israeli forces made 2 incursions to level land east of al-Buraij refugee camp. (WAFA, WAFA 8/7; PCHR 8/8)

PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki announced that Nicaragua will be opening an embassy in Palestine and that a Nicaraguan citizen of Palestinian decent will be the ambassador to Palestine. (WAFA 8/7)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces set up roadblocks between Nablus and Jenin after alleging that a man fired at Israeli soldiers north of Nablus. Near Ramallah, Israeli forces raided Dayr Nidham leading to confrontations with residents; during the confrontation Israeli forces detained 21 people who were all released after being interrogated. Israeli forces arrested 3 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Qalqilya, Hebron, and Jenin. Israeli settlers with military escort toured a religious site southeast of Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces detained 35 children and 5 instructors riding a school bus. The children were allowed to leave after the bus was taken to an Israeli facility, however the 5 instructors were arrested. Israeli forces also later arrested 1 Palestinian in Issawiyya; the Palestinian teen suffered several fractures during the arrest. The U.S. senate confirmed Kelly Craft as the next U.S. ambassador to the UN. During the confirmation hearing, Craft promised to continue former Ambassador Nikki Haley’s efforts to fight anti-Israel resolutions and actions. (HA 8/1)
