Peres survives 5 votes of no-confidence in Knesset over Shin Bet scandal but calls for limited investigation into the security agency [WP, JTA 7/1]. Five are slightly wounded in explosion Tel Aviv bus; Syrian-based faction Fateh Uprising takes responsibility [NYT 7/1]. Jordan supports appointment of 4 local Palestinians as West Bank mayors and promises to supply money to their cities if they are appointed [JP 7/1; LAT 7/10].

Other Countries: High-level Israeli delegation, including Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Meir Rosenne, concludes talks with U.S. Justice Dept. regarding prospects for bringing criminal charges against Israeli Air Force Colonel Aviem Sela (and 3 other Israelis) as contacts for Jonathan Jay Pollard, who earlier pleaded guilty to spying for Israel; Israel says recruitment of Pollard was unauthorized move by lowerlevel Israeli officials operating on their own initiative, and that by Israeli law they cannot be forced to testify [NYT 7/2; WP 7/4].

Arab World: Amal resumes attack on Palestinian camps in south Beirut [LAT 6/17].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Al-Fajr reports Jordan has blacklisted 34 West Bank journalists and given orders for their detention if they enter Jordan. Press agencies and newspapers that criticize Jordan's PLO policy are to be boycotted. Ban affects al-Fajr, al-Quds, and al-Mithaq [FJ 6/13].

Arab World: Muslim religious and political leaders meet in Damascus with Syrian V. P. Khaddam; reach agreement on Lebanese security; extend Lebanese law to Palestinian camps.

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian political prisoner Mahmud Muhammad Mustafa al-Ajrami is deported to Jordan; Israeli authorities refused to release him from prison when he completed his 6- month sentence nearly 11 months ago; his lawyer's only alternative was to seek deportation [FJ 6/20]. Israel grants Hebron industrialists permission to establish Chamber of Industry in West Bank [FJ 6/13].

Military Action

Arab World: Iranian envoy, deputy foreign minister Muhammad Ali Bisharati, calls for peace in south Beirut. Injured are removed from Burj al-Burajinah but fighting continues [LT 6/11; WP 6/12].
