In the West Bank, IDF troops detain and interrogate 2 Palestinians during a raid in Rantis village nr. Bethlehem. Hours later, PASF troops arrive to arrest 1 of the men. Meanwhile, IDF troops arrest a Palestinian at a checkpoint in c. Hebron after she is found to be carrying a knife. They arrest 6 more Palestinians during latenight raids in and around Hebron, Ramallah, and Tulkarm; and patrol nr. Hebron during the day. Israeli forces level Palestinian lands outside Bayt Dajan in the n. Jordan Valley. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land nr. Khan Yunis. Hamas-affiliated media report that the high-level delegation to Egypt led by Hamas’s new 2d-in-command Sinwar has returned to Gaza without reaching any major agreement on the Rafah border crossing or other issues. “All the shared issues have been studied in a serious and deep way with our Egyptian brothers,” a Hamas source says. However, there is speculation in the Arab press that Hamas and the Egyptian govt. did, in fact, reach an agreement to ease points of tensions. (TOI 6/12; MNA, TOI 6/13)

The PFLP fires a rocket (the IDF alleges a Grad) fr. Gaza into Israel, hitting nr. Ashqelon, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF bulldozes 4 Palestinian homes (displacing 31 Palestinians) nr. Tubas, another 4 homes in Bayt Dajan in the Jordan Valley (also displacing 31 Palestinians), 2 bedouin tents nr. Hebron, and 2 shops in Qalqilya; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Abu Dis and Jabal Mukabir nr. Jerusalem, Jalazun r.c. nr. Ramallah, Qalqilya (firing on residential areas, wounding 7 Palestinians, including a woman and 5 children), and Qabatya, as well as nr. Bethlehem, Hebron, Jenin, Nablus. The IDF tightens roadblocks btwn. Jerusalem, Ramallah; imposes a curfew on Silwad nr. Ramallah; shoots, wounds a mentally handicapped Palestinian who strays into a closed military zone nr. Morag; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Hebron, and in Aida r.c., Balata r.c., Bayt Rima and Dayr Ghassana nr. Ramallah, Madama nr. Nablus, Salfit; begins work on new segments of the separation wall running s. of Hebron and btwn. East Jerusalem and the Qalandia checkpoint s. of Ramallah, bulldozing 500 d.; reportedly bulldozes large areas in Wadi al-Malih in the n. Jordan Valley. Palestinians in Nablus report that the IDF is digging a trench 3 m deep and 4 m wide to encircle Salim, Azmut, Dayr Hatab, Bayt Dajan, and Bayt Furik villages (combined population 30,000); 3 km have been completed. Armed Palestinians calling themselves the Fatah Fighters kidnap the PA’s security dir. for the Rafah checkpoint Saad al-Sayfan, accusing him of corruption. 15 armed Palestinians occupy the Khan Yunis governate building for 2 hrs., demand that the PA compensate local Palestinians who have lost their homes to IDF bulldozing. Palestinians fire 5 mortars at Gush Katif, causing no damage or injuries. A PA court in Gaza opens a trial against 7 alleged collaborators, including Muhammad and Rami Abu Qaynas, accused of providing Israel with information used to assassinate Hamas leader ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Rantisi on 4/17/04.
