Bayt Lahiya, killing 2 AMB mbrs.; raids Khan Yunis, firing on residential areas and then exchanging fire with Palestinian gunmen who confront them, killing 1 Palestinian (possibly armed), seriously wounding 1 Palestinian civilian, moderately wounding 2 gunmen. Palestinians fire 8 mortars at IDF bulldozers sent into the Erez industrial zone to level land; the IDF responds with heavy machine gun fire; no injuries are reported. Palestinians fire 2 rockets fr. n. Gaza into Israel, causing damage at a cemetery but no reported injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. Tubas, partially demolishing a Palestinian home, firing on stone-throwing youths who confront the troops, wounding 9. Jewish settlers fr. Yitzhar nr. The IDF imposes a general closure on the West Bank and Gaza until 10/2 for the Sukkoth holidays. During the day in Gaza, the IDF makes an air strike on a car nr. Gaza City, assassinating 5 Army of Islam mbrs. (Hussein Ahil, Fawzi al-Ashram, Ayman Dalul, Osama al-Rifi, Sami al-Za‘im), wounding at least 1; makes 2 air strikes on suspected rocket-launching sites in n. Gaza and 3 on similar sites nr. Jabaliya r.c., causing no injuries; launches a major incursion into Bayt Hanun, with 50 tanks and bulldozers, cutting electricity to n. In Gaza City, 2,000 Palestinians hold a peaceful demonstration calling on Fatah, Hamas to work together. A PSF officer dies of injuries received in interfactional clashes in Jabaliya on 6/11. In Gaza, Palestinians fire 3 mortars at IDF bulldozers clearing Palestinian land on the Gaza side of the Erez crossing, causing no damage or injuries. The IDF bulldozes Palestinian land nr. the Qarni crossing, along the border e. of Dayr al-Balah. Late in the evening, the IDF raids Jenin r.c. in a failed attempt to capture West Bank AMB leader Zakariya Zubaydi, fatally shooting Muhammad Hayja (his deputy and a local AMB leader). The Palestinian groups holding IDF soldier Gilad Shalit release a video of him to mark the anniversary of his capture in a raid 1 yr. ago in which he urges the Israeli government to agree to a swap of Hamas prisoners for his release. The Army of Islam issues a new video of kidnapped BBC correspondent Johnston warning that he would be killed if an attempt were made to free him by force. For a 4th day, Jewish settlers occupying a Palestinian home in Hebron attempt to break into several nearby Palestinian homes, vandalize Palestinian property, beat Palestinian residents. Israel allows the Rafah crossing to Egypt to open for departures for the 1st time since 3/6, sparking a surge by 100s of Palestinians seeking to exit that leaves a 61-yr.-old Palestinian dead; PA presidential guardsmen controlling the exit use clubs, fire at the ground to push back travelers seeking to exit, wounding 7 and prompting the European Union (EU) observers to close the crossing. The IDF also sends bulldozers into Gaza e. of Bureij r.c. to level land. Palestinians shut the Sufa crossing to protest the attack today on the Palestinian director of the crossing by unknown gunmen (no injuries reported). The IDF injures a 13-yr.-old Palestinian boy in a hit-and-run incident nr. Tubas; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Abu Dis, nr. Hebron. Jewish settlers fr. several settlements nr. Bethlehem close off a main road southeast of Bethlehem to Palestinian traffic to protest the IDF’s ban on their using the road. In Jabaliya r.c, Hamas gunmen surround the home of local Fatah leader Mansur Shalail, attempting to detain him in connection with the killing of 2 Hamas supporters; after several hrs.10s of Hamas mbrs. storm the house exchange fire with Shalail and a supporter, leaving 2 Hamas mbrs. dead and withdrawing without detaining or harming Shalail. Meanwhile, Fatah mbrs. storm the al-Hidaya mosque in Gaza City, open fire on worshipers, killing 5 Palestinians, and taking 10 Hamas mbrs. hostage, threaten to kill them if Shalail is harmed; the 10 are not released after Shalail is left unharmed. The incident sparks heavily clashes (including mortar and RPG fire) btwn. Hamas, Fatah mbrs. in Gaza City, including a Hamas attacks on the PSF headquarters, gun battles outside the residences of Abbas, Zahhar, PA internal security head Rashid Abu Shibak of Fatah.
