The IDF continues operations in Khan Yunis, reinforcing troops, killing 5 Palestinians (3 resistance mbrs.; 2 civilians, including 1 mentally handicapped man), wounding 13, begins bulldozing Palestinian homes. The IDF also fatally shoots a Palestinian teenager hanging campaign posters for Mustafa Barghouthi in Tal al-Sultan r.c. nr. Rafah; fatally shoots a Palestinian teenager hunting birds nr. the Rafah-Egypt border; imposes 1-day curfews on, conducts arrest raids and house searches in Dayr Ghassana, Qarawat Bani Zayd, and Kafr ‘Ayn (all nr. Ramallah); conducts arrest raids, demolishes 2 Palestinian homes nr. Ramallah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Bayt Omar, Hebron; fires on residential areas of Rafah. In East Jerusalem, Israeli police raid Abbas’s campaign headquarters, photographing the offices, employees; tear down campaign posters hung around town by various candidates. Overnight, the IDF sends troops back into Khan Yunis, shelling residential areas, clashing with Palestinians, leaving 3 Palestinians (2 resistance mbrs., 1 civilian) dead, wounding 11, demolishing 9 Palestinian homes as well as walls around a hospital and elementary school. The IDF fatally shoots an unarmed Palestinian attempting to infiltrate the Israeli border in n. Gaza. AMB gunmen fatally shoot an Israeli security officer guarding civilian contractors working on the separation wall in Idna in the s. West Bank. Palestinians report that the curfew on Talluza, imposed on 12/11, is still in place. The IDF allows 1,000 PA policemen in the West Bank to patrol with arms through 12/23 to provide security during municipal elections. The IDF conducts arrest raids in Bani Na‘im and neighboring Hebron, Bayt Jala, Bayt Rima nr. Ramallah. In East Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter, 4 American Yeshiva students throw a Molotov cocktail at a group of Palestinians, but the gasoline bomb fails to ignite, causing no injuries; Israeli police later arrest, quickly release the students on bail. Within hrs. of Arafat’s death, the PC, in keeping with the Basic Law, formally swears in PC speaker Rawhi Fattuh as interim head of the PA until elections are organized within the next 60 days;Qurai‘ maintains the position of PM, responsible for daily PA operations. Qaddumi is elected as head of Fatah by the 15-mbr. Fatah Central Comm. Abbas is voted head of the PLO by the PLO Exec. Comm. The State Dept. says that it is prepared to help the Palestinians hold elections if asked; says that Israel still must carry out Gaza disengagement. France sends Arafat’s body off to Egypt with full military honors. Throughout the day, Palestinians across the territories rally, demonstrate in honor of Arafat. The IDF raids Shaykh Ajlin, exchanging fire with armed Palestinians (leaving 1 Palestinian dead), shelling residential areas (killing 2 Palestinian civilians, wounding 7), bulldozing 120 d.; fatally shoots an Egyptian who apparently infiltrated into Gaza fr. Egypt; fatally shoots 3 Palestinians (at least 2 of them armed) s. of Netzarim; fires on stone-throwing Palestinians in Bayt Omar nr. Hebron, killing 1 Palestinian, wounding 10; fires on stone-throwing Palestinians protesting the separation wall nr. Jayyus, wounding 2 with live ammunition; fires on residential areas of Rafah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Nablus. Some 100 AMB mbrs. (some armed and masked) outside Arafat’s headquarters in Ramallah call for an investigation into Arafat’s death and rumors he was poisoned by Israeli agents, chant slogans denouncing Abbas, fmr. PA security chief Muhammad Dahlan as agents for the CIA. Israeli border police disperse 100s of Palestinians conducting nationalist marches in East Jerusalem in memory of Arafat. In Haifa, Israeli police disperse some 100 Israeli Palestinians holding a candlelight vigil for Arafat, detain a woman carrying a Palestinian flag. The IDF launches Operation Days of Penitence, sending 3 brigades (ca. 2,000 troops) with 100 tanks, armored personnel carriers (APCs), armored bulldozers to cordon off the n. Gaza Strip, killing 8 Palestinians (including at least 3 Hamas mbrs., 3 other armed Palestinians, 2 bystanders), wounding 17 in clashes during the day (some casualties, according to hospital workers, were hit by internationally banned flechettes); 2 Palestinians (including 1 militant) die of injuries received in n. Gaza on 9/29, 9/30; the IDF also drops a bomb on a factory in Jabaliya r.c. Armed Palestinians build sand berms to block streets, lay booby-traps along roads in Jabaliya, wounding 2 IDF soldiers with a roadside bomb. The IDF fatally shoots 1 Palestinian, captures 7 attempting to cross the Israel-Gaza border nr. the Erez crossing; the AMB, Hamas say the 8 (who are wearing PA police uniforms, carrying 88 lbs of explosives) are their mbrs. In Sakhnin, Israel, 3,000 Israeli Palestinians hold a demonstration to commemorate the 4th anniversary of the 10/00 riots, during which 18 Israeli Palestinians died (13 killed by Israeli police, 5 by Israeli civilians). The IDF fires missiles at the car of PRC leader Muhammad Abu Nusayra as he drives in Khan Yunis in an attempt to assassinate him; he is seriously wounded, his bodyguard Ali al-Sha‘ir is killed, several bystanders are injured. A Palestinian teacher is killed by stray IDF machine gun fire outside a Khan Yunis school. The IDF also fatally shoots 2 Palestinians near the border fence in central Gaza; fatally shoots 2 Palestinians who “approach” an IDF convoy in Balata r.c.; fires on stonethrowing Palestinians in ‘Ayn Bayt al-Ma’ r.c., on residential areas of Rafah (wounding a 9-yr.-old Palestinian inside her home); conducts arrest raids, house searches in Jenin town and r.c., al-Khadir and in and around Hebron, Nablus; raids, searches an ambulance building. A female AMB suicide bomber fr. Askar r.c. detonates a device in East Jerusalem’s French Hill settlement when 2 Israeli border policemen ask to search her bag; the bomber, 2 Israeli police officers are killed, 16 Jewish settlers are lightly injured. The IDF demolishes the homes of the bomber’s family, the person who recruited her. The IDF also demolishes 10 Palestinian homes in Khan Yunis, shells residential areas, wounding 17, before ending the operation it began there on 9/21; demolishes 2 Palestinian homes, bulldozes 81 d. in al-Mughraqa; demolishes 3 Palestinian homes in Nablus. The 9-yr.-old Palestinian girl wounded inside an UNRWA school on 9/7 dies. The IDF assassinates Hamas mbrs. Nabil al-Su‘aidi and Rabah Zaqqut, firing a missile at their car as they drive in Gaza City, wounding 5 bystanders (including 2 children); fires on residential areas of Balata r.c., then fires on stone-throwing youths who confront the troops; raids an Islamic charitable trust and elementary school in Hebron, confiscating equipment, money; conducts arrest raids in Aida r.c., Jenin, Nablus. Palestinians fire a Qassam rocket at Sederot, causing light damage but no injuries. The AMB also executes 2 Palestinian collaborators in Tulkarm. In Hebron, a Jewish settler attacks, beats 2 Palestinian Waqf employees cleaning the Muslim side of the Ibrahimi Mosque/Tomb of the Patriarchs, is later arrested by the Israeli police. The IDF sends tanks into the Bayt Hanun, Bayt Lahiya, Jabaliya r.c. in what it says will be a “limited operation,” shelling residential areas, wounding at least 17 Palestinians (including 13 children). The IDF also conducts arrest raids, fires on residential areas in Khan Yunis. In Hebron, the IDF surrounds, evacuates the home of a wanted Palestinian; fires 3 shells at the house when he does not emerge, wounding him; arrests him, demolishes the house. The IDF demolishes a 2d Palestinian home in Salfit. IDF undercover units storm a Jericho caf´e, assassinate senior Amari r.c. AMB mbr. ‘Amr A‘idiyya, wounding 3 Palestinian bystanders, arresting 19. Palestinians retaliate by firing 5 Qassam rockets toward Sederot (damaging a car but causing no injuries), firing 5 mortars at Neve Dekalim (damaging a house). The IDF fires on stone-throwing youths in Bayt Hanun (killing an 18-yr.-old Palestinian), Rafah (killing a 2d Palestinian, wounding a woman in her home), Ramallah; rockets 2 metal foundries (allegedly Hamas weapons factories) in Gaza City, wounding 6 Palestinians, cutting electricity to parts of the city; demolishes a Palestinian home nr. Nablus; fires on residential areas of Ramallah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Hebron. In Jerusalem, Israeli police fatally shoot a Palestinian who attempts to flee on foot after allegedly trying to run down an officer with his van. Prominent Jewish residents of Ashkelon ask Mayor Roni Mahatzri to ban Israeli Arabs, bedouin fr. staying overnight in the city, attending the city’s entertainment venues, complaining that “bedouin and Israeli Arabs from the north of the country employed in the city’s construction sites hang out with local [Jewish] girls” in the evenings. In Bayt Hanun, the IDF shells residential areas, occupies a vacated Palestinian home as an observation post, clashes with suspected Hamas mbrs, wounding 2 and mortally wounding 1 Palestinian, bars ambulances fr. reaching him, allowing him to bleed to death. The IDF also fatally shoots a wanted AMB mbr. in a raid on Jenin; occupies a vacant Palestinian home in Shaykh Ajlin nr. Gaza City as an observation post, bulldozes 10 dunams of surrounding land; fires on residential areas of Nablus, Rafah; conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. Bethlehem, Hebron, Jenin, Ramallah, and in Nablus, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Wadi al-Silqa. Jewish settlers fr. Yitzhar steal a herd of sheep fr. local Palestinians; when Israeli police intervene to secure the sheep and return them to the Palestinians, the settlers attack and beat the Palestinians; Israeli police call in reinforcements, arrest 5 settlers. The IDF conducts predawn arrest raids, house searches in Nablus in search of wanted Hamas activist Jafar Masri, arrests Masri’s wife and brother but does not find him. The IDF also begins work on a stretch of the separation wall outside of Husan; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Tulkarm r.c., Yatta; demolishes a Palestinian home nr. Nablus; bulldozes a Palestinian home, levels several others that were previously heavily damaged in Rafah; bulldozes 1.5 dunams of agricultural land nr. Khan Yunis; announces that it has arrested 4 bedouin, 7 Egyptians, a Nablus Palestinian allegedly involved in a scheme to smuggle weapons fr. Egypt to Nablus. Palestinian gunmen fire on an IDF bus outside Hermesh settlement nr. Baqa‘ al-Sharqiyya, wounding 1 IDF soldier. A Palestinian stabs, wounds 2 Israeli police officers in French Hill settlement in East Jerusalem, is arrested. The IDF evacuates an illegal settlement outpost nr. Hebron that has been evacuated 7 times previously (most recently on 3/31), says 5 more outposts are due to be removed soon. At the same time, 50 armed Jewish settlers fr. Kiryat Arba rampage through Palestinian areas of Hebron, vandalizing 6 Palestinian homes, injuring 4 Palestinians; IDF soldiers observe but do not intervene. Jewish settlers fr. Israeli riot police clash with Palestinian worshipers at al-Aqsa Mosque after Friday prayers in the greatest violence there since Sharon’s 9/00 visit that sparked the al-Aqsa intifada; after some worshipers throw stones at police guarding Jews praying at the Wailing Wall, Israeli police wielding batons, firing stun grenades and rubber bullets charge the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, injuring at least 45, arresting 14, driving 1,000s of worshipers into the mosque; Palestinians are allowed to leave after more than an hr. when Waqf officials negotiate their peaceful dispersal. An armed Palestinian infiltrates Avnei Hefetz settlement nr. Tulkarm, fires on a house, killing 1 Jewish settler, wounding 1 before being shot dead by the IDF. The IDF raids the Rafah home of PFLP military cmdr. Ashraf Abu Libdeh, fatally shooting him in what may be an assassination, also firing on the surrounding area, wounding 21 bystanders, including 9 children, 2 women. In Silwan, East Jerusalem, 16 Jewish settler families under heavy Israeli police guard take over 16 Palestinian homes they claim to have purchased fr. residents, doubling Silwan’s settler population; settlers have taken over a total of 50 homes, schools, archeological sites in the area. An ailing 8-yr.-old Palestinian boy fr. Habla village dies en route to the hospital when no IDF soldiers are present to allow his passage through the separation wall to reach a Qalqilya hospital 3 km away, forcing his ambulance to drive 30 km around the wall to reach the hospital. The Sharon admin. announces it will shorten the planned route of the separation wall to reduce the hardship on Palestinians, gain U.S. support for the project.
