In Gaza, the IDF closes Erez crossing for unspecified security reasons (the crossing has been open only to select VIPs and medical cases since 3/12); sends additional troops into the Shurrab Farms area nr. Bayt Hanun, firing on residential areas of Bayt Hanun, wounding 1. In the West Bank, the IDF sends troops into ‘Ayn Bayt al-Ma’ r.c. nr. Nablus, firing on residential areas, killing an off-duty PA policeman in his home; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Hebron (searching several mosques and hospitals looking for arms caches, finding none; surrounding several mosques, interrogating worshippers as they leave dawn prayers) in Balata r.c., Ramallah (targeting the AMB), and nr. Bethlehem, Jenin. Jewish settlers fr. Eli nr. Nablus, burn 7 d. of nearby Palestinian olive groves. Jewish settlers fr. Rotem nr. Nablus prevent Palestinian farmers from accessing their fields. An IDF air strike destroys the Khan Yunis home of a Hamas mbr.; the IDF warns the residents in advance to leave. In the West Bank, the IDF fires on a car nr. al-Til nr. Nablus, killing 1 Palestinian civilian; patrols in, fires on residential areas of Kfar Ra’i nr. Jenin; conducts arrest raids, house searches in and around Nablus, in Hebron. Jewish settlers fr. Brakha nr. Nablus steal fruit, olives fr. Palestinian orchards in Kafr Qalil. Palestinians in Jericho, Ramallah observe a general strike to protest intraPalestinian violence in Gaza. The IDF sends troops into Bani Na‘im, surrounds a house in search of a wanted Palestinian who is not home, fires on stonethrowing Palestinians who confront the troops, sparking several hrs. of clashes that leave 35 Palestinians wounded; conducts overnight arrest raids in and around Jenin and in Askar r.c., Balata r.c., Bethlehem, Hebron, Nablus’s old city, Ramallah; uproots 10s of olive trees and bulldozes 2 animal pens for construction of the separation wall nr. Jenin; erects a metal gate, places barbed wire at the southern entrance to Jamayn nr. Nablus, which faces a settler bypass road; installs metal gates at entrances to Marda, facing Ariel settlement. The IDF also requests that the PA dig a trench 20 m long by 4 m deep near the Qarni crossing in a search for smugglers tunnels; the PA complies but no tunnels are found. F-16s at an educational center in Khan Yunis (causing serious damage but no injuries), 7 access roads to the n. Gaza no-go zone; conducts mock air raids, breaking the sound barrier over Gaza City; extends closure on the Tulkarm and Jenin areas (in place in Tulkarm since 12/15, in Jenin since shortly thereafter) to Nablus, effectively prohibiting any Palestinian travel southward towards Ramallah and sealing 800,000 Palestinians in the northern canton; detains 23 Palestinian election officials on their way to a training session in Ramallah at a checkpoint nr. Tulkarm for 6 hrs.; arrests a Palestinian candidate for the 1/25 elections campaigning in Jerusalem; patrols in Bethlehem, Ramallah; conducts arrest raids, house searches in al-Arub r.c. (arresting the campaign coordinator for the Alternative list in the 1/25 elections), Balata r.c., Jenin town and r.c. and nr. Dozens of armed Jewish settlers attempt to reoccupy the vacated West Bank settlement of Sanur; the IDF removes them. Some 200 PA policemen rampage through PA offices, courthouses, an election office, and a municipal building in Rafah, firing in the air to protest the PA’s failure to fight lawlessness in Gaza after the death of a PA policeman in clashes on 12/29.
