In the West Bank, 3 Israeli settlers were shot by unknown assailants during a drive-by shooting by an Israeli settlement near Yasuf; 1 of the settlers was said to be in critical condition. The Israeli military subsequently sent more soldiers to the West Bank to partake in the hunt for the perpetrators. Israeli settlers raided Qusra, causing damage to Palestinian-owned houses. Israeli settlers also raided Jalud, setting Palestinian property on fire; Israeli forces intervened on behalf of the Israeli settlers, arresting 11 Palestinians and injuring 4 with rubber-coated bullets. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian 60-year-old woman, claiming she had attempted to stab the soldiers at a checkpoint north of al-‘Arub refugee camp; a video of the incident did show that the woman was carrying a knife but that she was several feet away from the soldiers and walking very slowly, displaying no imminent threat to the soldiers. Israeli forces also injured 5 Palestinians with live ammunition and arrested 11 during a raid in Beita. 5 other Palestinians were arrested, including 4 during late-night raids in Hizma and 1 at a checkpoint near Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Shaykh Jarrah demonstrating against the eviction of Palestinians from the neighborhood (see below), tear-gas related injuries were reported and 1 was arrested. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces attacked Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. An Israeli supreme court judge postponed the eviction of 6 Palestinian families from their homes in Shaykh Jarrah until 5/6. The judge said the 6 families, 27 people, had to “reach an agreement” with the Israeli settlers set to displace them from their homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood. The 6 families rejected having to reach an agreement with the settlers, maintaining that the land belongs to them. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted 30 olive, sage, and thyme seedlings and wrote racist graffiti on 1 well and 1 agricultural structure in Qusra. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 1 with live ammunition, 2 with rubber-coated bullets; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed protests in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 2 with rubber-coated bullets; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian man south of Bethlehem, alleging that he tried to stab an Israeli soldier with a broken bottle. Meanwhile, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters demonstrating against Israeli harassment of Palestinians in East Jerusalem, at a checkpoint in Jenin, 1 minor was injured by live ammunition and others suffered tear-gas related injuries. 5 Palestinians were arrested, including 3 during late-night raids in Bethlehem, and 2 at checkpoints near Jenin and Yatta. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces raided the Damascus Gate plaza dispersing Palestinians in the area; 1 Palestinian minor was reportedly beaten by Israeli police before he was arrested. 1 other Palestinian minor was arrested in the Old City. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian farmers east of Bayt Hanun; no injuries were reported. Chief of Mossad Yossi Cohen met with U.S. president Joe Biden as he and other Israeli senior officials tried lobby the U.S. not to reenter the Iran nuclear deal. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized some 100 olive saplings in Qusra. An Israeli settler also opened fire at PA Lands and Water Authority employees working near al-Twana; no injuries were reported and the settler was detained by Israeli forces. 1 Palestinian was arrested at a checkpoint southwest of Jenin. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Jabal Mukabir and Israeli forces razed land east of Issawiyya. Israeli forces also sprayed skunk water at Palestinian homes and arrested 1 minor during a late-night raid in Issawiyya. 1 other Palestinian was arrested during a house raid in Abu Tor. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian-owned vehicles near Nablus, damaging 1. Israeli forces confiscated 1 Palestinian-owned cargo truck in Atuf. Israeli forces also delivered a demolition order for a house under construction in Khirbet Ras al-Ahmar. 5 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Hebron, Yatta, Jenin, and Atuf. In East Jerusalem, 6 Palestinians were arrested, including 5 protesting the razing of land in Silwan and 1 in Issawiyya. The PA said it will receive its 1st doses of COVID-19 vaccines in March from the company Astro-Zeneca. The PA foreign ministry also said in a statement that Israel is “ignoring its duties as an occupation power and committing racial discrimination against the Palestinian people, depriving them of their right to health care . . . The search by the Palestinian leadership to secure the vaccines from various sources doesn't exempt Israel from its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people in providing the vaccines.” Many human rights organizations, Amnesty International amongst them, have maintained that it is Israel’s responsibility to provide vaccines to the Palestinian people it occupies, a responsibility Israel denies, citing the Oslo Accords. Israel has been vaccinating Palestinian citizens of Israel and Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem along with Israeli settlers in the West Bank. In Lebanon, residents of Beirut complained about low-flying Israeli jets, which is said to become more frequent. On 1/8, an Israeli fighter jet flew over Lebanese air space for 6 hours. UNIFIL has said the Israeli violation of Lebanese air space is a near daily occurrence. (AA, BB, HA 1/10)

In the 3d installment of a 3-part interview with al-Arabiya TV, Saudi prince Bandar bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz said that Saudi Arabia should weigh its own security challenges over its grievances with Israel related to Palestinians. Prince Bandar, a former ambassador to the U.S., said that Palestinian leaders are allying themselves with Turkey and Iran, countries that to varying degrees are adversaries to Saudi Arabia as well as Israel. Palestinians throw stones and roll burning tires toward the settlers; IDF troops violently disperse them, critically injuring 1. Elsewhere, IDF troops conduct raids in Kafr Dan near Jenin, sparking clashes with stonethrowing Palestinians; there are no serious injuries. They also arrest 8 Palestinians during late-night raids near Nablus, Jenin, and Hebron; and patrol near Qalqilya. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 4 Islamic Waqf guards at Haram al-Sharif and 4 more Palestinians during raids in Biddu and Ras al-Amud. The Trump administration announces that it has not yet reached a decision about relocating the U.S. embassy in Israel, despite the fact that today is the deadline for Trump to sign the presidential waiver delaying the move for 6 months. “We will share a decision on the waiver in the coming days,” a spokesperson says. Because Trump did not sign the waiver in time, U.S. law allows Congress to demand that he move the embassy and cut funding to the State Dept. It’s unlikely lawmakers will pursue either option. Near Jenin in the West Bank, Israeli forces carry out the punitive demolition of the home of a Palestinian imprisoned in connection with the killing of an Israeli settler on 10/4/2017. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians, Israelis, and international activists at Friday protests against the 11/30 killing of a Palestinian farmer and Israel’s occupation, settlements, and separation wall in 3 villages near Ramallah (Nabi Salih, Bil‘in, and Ni‘lin), Kafr Qaddum near Qalqilya, Khirbat Qalqas near Hebron, and Qusra near Nablus; 1 Palestinian is injured. The Israeli Air Force (IAF) launches an air strike at a military base outside Damascus, Syria. According to Syrian press sources, the target was an Iranian military base 13 km south of the city. The extent of the damage is not reported. (HA, TOI 12/2)
