Before dawn, the IDF launches a major incursion (90 tanks, bulldozers, helicopter cover) into Gaza City and Bayt Lahia, killing 9 Palestinians (including wanted local AMB leader Muhammad Kishku, senior Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades mbr. Yasin Nassar in what may be assassinations), wounding 24, blowing up 1 Palestinian home, 13 metal workshops. Palestinians detonate a roadside bomb underneath 1 of the 20 tanks entering Gaza City, disabling it, injuring 2 IDF soldiers (see 9/5). Israel says the incursions are the start of a major campaign in the Gaza Strip targeting Hamas, though troops withdraw fr. Gaza City by the end of the day. The IDF also fires live ammunition at stone-throwing children in Bayt Hanun and Khan Yunis, wounding 8 and 2 respectively; fires live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas at Palestinian protesters defying the curfew in Hebron; conduct arrest raids in al-Ram. Israeli police place Fatah secy. in Jerusalem Salah al-Zuhaykha under house arrest for allegedly arranging protests under orders fr. Arafat. After 2 days of debate, the UN Security Council (UNSC) passes (14-0, with the U.S. abstaining) Res. 1435 on the siege in Ramallah, which expresses grave concern over the Palestinians' humanitarian plight and reoccupation of Palestinian cities, "demands" Israel's immediate halt attacks on the PA headquarters. The IDF says its operations will continue "until their objectives are met." IDF commandos raid Tulkarm, assassinate local AMB cmdr. Ziad Da'as, also killing 2 Palestinian bystanders. In Khan Yunis, an IDF sniper fatally shoots Hamas mbr. Hussam Hamdan, son of top Hamas political leader Ahmad Nimr. The IDF makes a predawn raid on Bayt Lahia, firing on residential areas (killing 1 Palestinian sleeping on his roof), arresting 3 relatives of a wanted Hamas mbr.; fires on residential areas of Dayr al-Balah (seriously injuring a 12-yr.-old Palestinian boy), Khan Yunis; arrests local AMB leader Yahya Dahamsa in Bethlehem, demolish his rented home; demolishes the family homes of relatives of 3 other Palestinian militants elsewhere; shoots at 2 PRCS ambulances in Gaza, disabling 1. A small bomb explodes underneath a fuel truck in Rishon Letzion, lightly injuring the Israeli driver; no group claims responsibility (see 5/24). Israeli police arrest 2 19-yr.-old Israeli Arab women for failing to prevent the 8/4 Meron Junction bus bombing. In Hawara, Palestinians, international peace activists stage a nonviolent march in defiance of the IDF curfew; the IDF responds with live fire, tear gas, percussion grenades, and arrests International Solidarity Movement (ISM) leader Adam Shapiro and 1 Palestinian; Shapiro is transferred to Ramla prison pending deportation. Arafat convenes an EA mtg. to grant "preliminary approval" to Ben-Eliezer's Gaza First plan. Israeli, PA security teams meet in the evening to discuss implementation but fail to agree on terms. Before dawn, the IDF sends tanks into Jenin r.c., meeting heavy resistance, leaving at least 6 Palestinians (including 1 doctor), 1 IDF reservist dead. 1 Israeli wounded in the 3/27 Netanya bombing dies bringing that toll to 24. The IDF reoccupies Nablus; reports operations in Beitunia, Dahaysha, Qalqilya, Salfit, Tamun, Taysir, Tubas, Tulkarm. In Ramallah, the IDF raids, confiscates files of PA ministries, the PC. The International Comm. of the Red Cross (ICRC) criticizes the IDF for hampering relief operations in Bethlehem; the PRCS estimates that 14 Palestinians have died in the city since 4/1, including 5 killed today. 10s of Christian clergymen, including Latin patriarch of Jerusalem Michel Sabbah, attempt to walk to Bethlehem to mediate a resolution to siege of the Church of the Nativity and other holy sites, but they are blocked by the IDF. Israeli police use tear gas, batons to disperse 2,000 Israeli, Palestinian peace activists attempting to cross al-Ram checkpoint in Jerusalem to bring food, medicine to Ramallah, injuring 20. In Jerusalem, a group of Palestinian teenagers fatally stabs an Israeli woman. Israeli police shoot at, captured 4 of the teenagers, 1 of whom dies at the scene. Police say the 14-yr.-old boy dropped dead of no apparent cause; witnesses say he was beaten, perhaps shot by soldiers. In n. Israel, a car mysteriously explodes killing 2 Palestinians; the IDF claims they were Islamic Jihad mbrs. en route to stage a car bombing. The IDF again fires tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets at demonstrators nr. Arafat's Ramallah headquarters, injuring 6; conducts arrest raids in Birzeit and in Tamun, where troops detain 7, wound 10 with live ammunition, occupy 12 Palestinian homes as IDF outposts, uproot 150 olive trees. The PA again calls for adherence to Arafat's cease-fire. At a pro-Hamas rally in Jabaliya attended more than 10,000 Palestinians, Hamas spokesman Rantisi vows more suicide attacks against Israel, says that anyone who seeks to stop the intifada "wants to tear us apart." The NIHC organizes a separate protest march fr. Shati` to the PC building in Gaza City, denouncing the U.S.'s biased policy, calling on Arab states to take a strong, unified stand on the Palestinian situation. Senior Fatah mbr. Imad Assaf is seriously injured in a mysterious explosion in Dahaysha; the PA accuses Israel of attempting to assassination him. Palestinians fire 2 mortars at a Jewish settlement in Gaza, causing no damage. In response, the IDF directs heavy machine gun fire on residential areas of Khan Yunis, Rafah (leaving 1 Palestinian clinically dead). The IDF also fires tear gas, concussion grenades to disperse a peaceful protest by Palestinians, international peace activists in Ramallah; conducts arrest raids in Osrin, firing on Palestinian homes; bulldozes Palestinian agricultural land along secondary roads in the Bethlehem, Jenin areas; imposes closures on 10 villages around Ramallah. In a New York Times op-ed, Arafat outlines the Palestinians' vision of peace as a 2-state solution, with an independent Palestinian state in all of the West Bank and Gaza, and a secure Israel within its 1967 borders. He also affirms that any solution to the refugee issue must consider Israel's demographic concerns and denounces "attacks carried out by terrorist groups against Israeli civilians." The IDF raids an alleged explosives factory in Nablus, killing most-wanted Izzeddine al-Qassam Brigades West Bank head Yusif Suragji and 3 other Hamas mbrs.; the PA claims they were assassinated. Hamas vows to launch an "all-out war" against Israel. In retaliation, an AMB gunman opens fire in West Jerusalem, wounding 16 Israelis before being fatally shot by Israeli police. Hamas spokesman `Abd al-`Aziz claims that the PA is actively tipping off the IDF to the location of Hamas operatives, granting the IDF entry to PA areas; threatens that Hamas will make sure the "conspirators . . . pay the price." In Nablus, 2,000 Palestinians angry over the deaths march on the local PA headquarters and PSF office demanding the release of 28 detained Hamas mbrs., torching 3 PSF cars. PSF officers shoot tear gas, stun grenades at the crowd, fire their weapons in the air, killing 1 Palestinian. To calm tensions, the PSF "temporarily" releases the brother of 1 of the Hamas mbrs. killed today so he may attend the funeral. IDF withdraws to the outskirts of Tulkarm after a massive 24-hr. incursion but also fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis.
