Four members of the boy’s family were killed that day when an Israeli air strike targeted his family home. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians march through Gaza City in protest of U.S. pres. Trump’s reported decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. IDF troops violently disperse dozens of Palestinians protesting along the border near Khan Yunis (there are no serious injuries). In the West Bank, the IDF temporarily closes the entrance to nearby Ya‘bad village after reports of shots fired at an Israeli settler bus near Jenin. IDF troops clash with stonethrowing Palestinians in al-‘Arub refugee camp near Hebron; there are no serious injuries. They also arrest 27 Palestinians during late-night raids near Nablus, Jenin, and Bethlehem; and patrol near Hebron and Bethlehem. In a speech broadcast from the White House, U.S. pres. Trump announces that the U.S. recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that his administration will begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “I have judged this to be in the best interest in the pursuit of peace between Israel and the Palestinians,” he says. PA pres. Abbas says that the U.S. can no longer serve as mediator between the Israelis and Palestinians. In the West Bank, Israeli forces punitively seal shut the Yatta home of a Palestinian imprisoned on charges related to a 6/2016 attack on Israelis in Tel Aviv. Israeli forces demolish a Palestinian home in Ni‘lin overnight. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops arrest 1 Palestinian during a raid near Bethlehem and patrol near Hebron and Nablus. The IDF orders approximately 300 Palestinian Bedouins to evacuate their homes near the Ma’ale Adumim settlement ahead of the planned demolition of their village, Jabal al-Baba. Similar orders have been issued for a Bedouin village in the northern Jordan Valley and other villages near Jerusalem, but none has been enforced yet. (HA, MNA, WAFA 11/17; TOI 11/18)

In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 16 Palestinians during late-night raids in al-Tur. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 2 Palestinians during raids near Hebron and Tulkarm, and patrol near Hebron, Tulkarm, Salfit, and Qalqilya. Israeli forces issue stop-work orders to a Palestinian home under construction near Hebron and a barn under construction near Salfit. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Bayt Lahiya and again near Jabaliya refugee camp, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 12 Palestinians and issue 1 arrest summons during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Ramallah, Nablus, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem, and patrol near Hebron and Salfit. In an interview with former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, U.S. pres. Trump says he is giving the peace process “a shot” before he “even think[s] about moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.” Trump repeatedly promised to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem while on the campaign trail in 2016. Hamas announces that its security forces have arrested several leaders of Islamist groups based in Gaza. The announcement comes in the context of Hamas’s ongoing crackdown on the groups. (MNA, TOI 10/7)

In the West Bank, IDF troops shut down the main road in Biddu, a village near Jerusalem, sparking clashes with stone-throwing residents; 7 Palestinians are injured (Biddu is 1 of the 9 Jerusalem-area villages still under lock-down following the deadly shooting at Har Hadar on 9/26). In the northern Jordan Valley, Israeli forces demolish water pipes and raze a road in a rural area outside Atuf. IDF troops then violently disperse Palestinian farmers, human rights activists, and religious leaders marching through Atuf in protest; 1 Palestinian is arrested and 1 is injured. They also arrest 3 Palestinians during late-night raids near Hebron and Ramallah, and patrol near Nablus, Jenin, and Salfit. Approximately 1,500 Israeli settlers visit Joseph’s Tomb near Nablus late at night, sparking minor clashes between their IDF escort and Palestinians from nearby Balata refugee camp; there are no serious injuries. In a meeting with top settler leaders, Israeli PM Netanyahu says that Israel must honor its commitment to the Trump administration to limit settlement construction and not be “piggish.” He also boasts that he had convinced the Trump administration to ignore any distinction between the settlement blocs and isolated settlements. Earlier in the day, Netanyahu reviews with U.S. special representative Greenblatt and U.S. ambassador David Friedman the Israeli government’s pending plans for settlement growth. (HA 9/27; HA 9/28)

Interpol announces that its general assembly has approved Palestine’s petition for full membership, with 75 countries voting in favor, 24 against and 34 abstaining. “The State of Palestine considers this membership and the responsibilities that it entails as an integral part of its responsibility toward the Palestinian people and a moral commitment to the citizens of the world,” the PA says in a statement. In the West Bank, Israeli forces raze Palestinian land near Hebron to make space for the expansion of a nearby settlement. The IDF arrest 1 Palestinian during a late-night raid near Bethlehem, and patrol near Hebron and Qalqilya during the day. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 4 Palestinians during raids in the Old City. Approximately 300 Israeli settlers, accompanied by several members of Knesset (MKs), establish a synagogue in Silwan, while Israeli forces cordon off the area, restricting Palestinian movement. U.S. pres. Donald Trump’s senior advisor and son-in-law Jared Kushner meets with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in the morning in Tel Aviv. He says that Trump is “committed to finding a solution that will bring prosperity and peace” to the region. Netanyahu’s office later says that the meeting was “effective and significant.” No further details are made public. Kushner later discusses the Trump administration’s peace efforts with Palestinian Authority (PA) pres. Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. He reportedly says that the Trump administration is planning to present a peace plan to the Palestinians and Israelis within 3–4 months, and asks Abbas to refrain from unilateral moves in international fora in the meantime. After the meeting, the PA releases a statement: “The PA and the U.S. delegation had a productive meeting focused on how to begin substantive Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Both sides agreed to continue with the U.S.-led conversations as the best way to reach a comprehensive peace deal.” (HA, REU, TOI, WAFA 8/24; MNA, NYT 8/25)

In c. Israel, Israeli police arrest a West Bank Palestinian after he allegedly stabs and seriously injures an Israeli in Yavne. The IDF then raids the alleged attacker’s Yatta home and imposes a lockdown on the village, blocking all entrances and exits. Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli forces raid a civil investigations office in c. Hebron, confiscating equipment and detaining the 30-odd employees. The office reportedly opened following a recent agreement between local Palestinian and Israeli authorities. IDF troops arrest a Palestinian allegedly armed with a knife at the Gush Etzion junction; arrest 8 more Palestinians, and issue 1 arrest summons during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem, Qalqilya, and Tubas. During raids in Wadi al-Juz, Ras al-Amud, Bayt Hanina, and al-Tur in East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 15 Palestinians in connection with the violence at the sanctuary (48 Palestinians are still reportedly being held in connection with the clashes). They also ban an Islamic Waqf employee from Haram al-Sharif. Palestinian youths throw stones at an Israeli police officer outside Damascus Gate, lightly injuring him. Meanwhile, approximately 1,000 Jewish settlers tour the sanctuary. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. Bayt Lahiya, causing no damage or injuries. The Israeli press reports that the IDF has completed construction of a 26-mile segment of the separation wall nr. Hebron, which they had resumed in 2/2017 after Palestinians from nearby Yatta village carried out a deadly shooting in 6/2016 in Tel Aviv. (MNA 8/3)

IDF troops shoot and critically injure a Palestinian youth outside a settlement nr. Jenin after she allegedly attempts to stab 1 of them (she will succumb to her injuries on 6/2). They also arrest 1 Palestinian during a latenight raid nr. Qalqilya and patrol nr. Hebron and Nablus. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land nr. Rafah. In s. U.S. pres. Trump signs a waiver delaying the relocation of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, upholding longstanding U.S. policy. “Trump made this decision to maximize the chances of successfully negotiating a deal between Israel and the Palestinians, fulfilling his solemn obligation to defend America’s national security interests,” according to a White House statement. “But, as he has repeatedly stated his intention to move the Embassy, the question is not if that move happens, but only when.” (BBC, EI, HA, JP, MNA, NYT, TOI, WHPO, YA 6/1; HA, TOI 6/2)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers assault and moderately injure a Palestinian shepherd nr. Nablus. IDF troops arrest 2 Palestinians and issue 1 arrest summons during late-night raids nr. Hebron. Following almost 20 hours of negotiations between their leaders and representatives of the PA, the International Comm. of the Red Cross, and the Israel Prison Service, Palestinian prisoners end the Dignity hunger strike they launched on 4/17. In the wake of the deal, the prisoners celebrate a slew of reported concessions, including new sports equipment for some prison yards, while the Israeli authorities deny making any. A West Bank Palestinian stabs and injures 4 people in Tel Aviv before the Israeli police arrest him. Hours after the attack, COGAT suspends single-day work permits granted to various organizations and groups to allow Palestinians to enter Israel and begins an investigation into the matter. The alleged attacker hailed from Nablus and obtained one such permit from a group called Natural Peace Tours, which facilitates relationships between individual Israelis and Palestinians. In the West Bank, the IDF shuts down the main entrance to a group of villages nr. Ramallah. It’s unclear what prompted the closure. IDF troops shoot and injure 3 Palestinians during clashes sparked by reports of stone throwing in Kafr Malik village nr. Ramallah; establish mobile checkpoints outside Bayt Umar, sparking further clashes (there are no serious injuries). Meanwhile, IDF troops arrest 6 Palestinians and issue 2 arrest summons during late-night raids nr. Ramallah and Hebron, and patrol nr. Hebron throughout the day. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian and issue 1 arrest summons during raids in Silwan. An Israeli settler driver allegedly rams and injures 2 Palestinian youths s. of the city, sparking minor clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians in the area; there are no serious injuries. The International Comm. of the Red Cross (ICRC) announces that it may consider the Palestinian prisoners’ demand for increased family visits, which they made in the context of the Dignity Strike. The ICRC used to coordinate 2 family visits per prisoner per mo. In 5/2016, however, the organization reduced the monthly visits to 1 due to an increased number of “no-shows” on the part of the families, according to an ICRC spokesperson. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians marching from c. Ramallah to the Beit El checkpoint in solidarity with the prisoners; 3 Palestinians are injured. (TOI 4/23)

Israeli forces launch an air strike on a proSyrian govt. militia group nr. Qunaytra in the Golan Heights, killing 3 soldiers, according to a statement from the group. The IDF does not comment on the strike. (HA, JP, TOI 4/23)

IDF troops conduct raids in al-Duha village nr. Bethlehem, issuing arrest summons to 2 Palestinians and sparking clashes with stonethrowing youths; there are no serious injuries. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops confiscate 2 cars, destroy personal property, and arrest 14 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem, and Nablus; and patrol nr. Nablus, Salfit, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 3 Palestinians who allegedly threw stones in the Old City. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. The Tel Aviv military court sentences Elor Azariya, the IDF soldier who killed an injured Palestinian execution-style on 3/24/2016 in c. Hebron, to 18 mos. in prison, the minimum sentence allowed under his 1/4/2017 conviction on charges of manslaughter, and also demotes him to the rank of private. (HA, JP, MNA, NYT, TOI 2/21)

The Jerusalem Municipality’s Local Planning and Building Comm. approves the construction of 566 new residences in Israeli settlements in East Jerusalem. Israeli PM Netanyahu reportedly ordered the plans to be put on hold until Donald Trump was sworn in as U.S. pres. on 1/20. (HA, JP, MNA, TOI, WAFA 1/22; MNA 1/23)

At the Israeli cabinet’s weekly meeting, Netanyahu says that he no longer supports the so-called regulations bill, which would retroactively authorize hundreds of illegal settlement outposts in the West Bank. He says “it’s possible” that the bill led to the UNSC’s res. condemning settlements on 12/23, and that it would be “irresponsible” to advance it further. Netanyahu also argues that a vote on a bill annexing the Ma’ale Adumim settlement bloc should be postponed until at least after he meets with U.S. pres. Trump. Jewish Home ministers agree to the postponement only after Netanyahu says he supports lifting restrictions on settlement construction in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. (HA, JP, MNA, YA 1/22)

PA pres. Abbas meets with Jordan’s King Abdullah in Amman to discuss U.S. pres. Trump’s campaign pledge to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. They agree to “take a number of measures” if the embassy is relocated, according to the official PA news site. (JP, WAFA, YA 1/22)

Israeli forces shoot and kill Fadi al-Qunbar, a Palestinian truck driver, outside the Old City after he rams a group of Israelis, killing 4 IDF soldiers and injuring at least 13 other people. Israeli forces then conduct raids on the alleged attacker’s home in Jabal Mukabir, interrogating his family for hours, threatening punitive demolition, and establishing checkpoints in the area. Their prolonged presence in the neighborhood sparks clashes with stonethrowing Palestinians; there are no serious injuries. After Israeli PM Netanyahu accuses the alleged attacker of supporting ISIS, Israel’s security cabinet decides to use administrative detention against any persons suspected of committing a crime who also identify as supporters of the group. The cabinet also decides to punitively demolish the attacker’s home as soon as possible, and to close down the attacker’s neighborhood, Jabal Mukabir. Meanwhile, the attacker’s family says he was motivated by U.S. pres.-elect Trump’s pledge to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “He was very angry, and said transferring the embassy would lead to war,” his cousin says. The IDF delivers stop-work orders to 11 Palestinian homes under construction nr. Bethlehem. IDF troops conduct raids nr. Nablus, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians outside Bayt Furik village; 1 Palestinian is arrested. They arrest 9 more Palestinians during late-night raids in Jenin and nr. Israeli naval forces confront Palestinian fishing boats off Gaza’s coast nr. Jabaliya r.c. in 2 separate incidents. One boat capsizes in the 2d incident and a fisherman goes missing. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolish 2 homes each in Shu‘fat and Bayt Hanina. Later, Israeli forces return to Shu‘fat to inspect a number of shops, sparking clashes with stone-throwing youths; there are no serious injuries. In the West Bank, Israeli forces raze a small swath of Palestinian land nr. Salfit and destroy a number of water wells nr. Bethlehem. They also deliver 19 stop-work orders to Palestinian houses and buildings under construction nr. Salfit. The IDF arrests 4 Palestinians during late-night raids nr.
