Overnight, the IDF sends troops back into Khan Yunis, shelling residential areas, clashing with Palestinians, leaving 3 Palestinians (2 resistance mbrs., 1 civilian) dead, wounding 11, demolishing 9 Palestinian homes as well as walls around a hospital and elementary school. The IDF fatally shoots an unarmed Palestinian attempting to infiltrate the Israeli border in n. Gaza. AMB gunmen fatally shoot an Israeli security officer guarding civilian contractors working on the separation wall in Idna in the s. West Bank. Palestinians report that the curfew on Talluza, imposed on 12/11, is still in place. The IDF allows 1,000 PA policemen in the West Bank to patrol with arms through 12/23 to provide security during municipal elections. The IDF deports to Gaza a Palestinian woman married to an Israeli Palestinian, their 2-yr. old daughter, saying they violated the Israeli Citizenship Law; fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis, Rafah; begins bulldozing Far‘un, Jayyus land confiscated on 12/17 for construction of the separation wall. The IDF denies a press card for entry to the occupied territories to Israeli Arab photographer Jamil Kadamani, citing “security considerations”; Kadamani, who works for French TV station FT1, has had a regular press card, allowing him access to Israeli officials, for 3 yrs. Palestinians fire mortars at central Gaza Jewish settlements, causing no damage or injuries. Overnight, the IDF launches Operation Orange Iron, sending tanks, bulldozers into Khan Yunis in further response to 12/16 mortar fire, shelling and firing missiles fr. helicopters at residential areas, clashing with local Palestinians, leaving a total of 9 Palestinians dead (5 armed Palestinians, 4 civilians), at least 30 Palestinians (mostly civilians, including 1 ambulance driver trying to evacuate the wounded) and 1 IDF soldier wounded, also leveling 39 Palestinian homes allegedly used as cover for mortar fire; 100s of Palestinians flee the fighting, many taking refuge in a nearby hospital, stadium; the IDF says it will stay in Khan Yunis “indefinitely.” In response, Palestinians fire 2 Qassam rockets into the Negev, causing no damage or injures. A smugglers’ tunnel collapses in Rafah after days of rain, trapping and killing at least 5 Palestinians;6are rescued. The IDF blocks a main road to Gaza City that runs nr. Netzarim settlement, fires a tank shell at a taxi that tries to circumvent the roadblock, killing the Palestinian driver; confiscates 600 d. fr. the villages of Surif and Jaba n. of Hebron for separation wall construction; demolishes a Palestinian home, raids 2 charitable societies in Hebron. The Fatah Hawks, Islamic Jihad gunmen attack an IDF patrol at Gaza’s Kissufim crossing, wounding 4 IDF soldiers, 1 Israeli civilian. In retaliation for house demolitions in Khan Yunis on 12/13, Palestinians fire a mortar at nearby Neve Dekalim settlement, hitting a greenhouse, killing 1 Thai worker, injuring 2 Thais. In retaliation for the 12/11 Hamas–Fatah Hawks attack, the IDF seals the Rafah crossing, fires on residential areas of Rafah (killing 1 Palestinian outside his home), conducts air strikes on 5 targets in Gaza City (destroying at least 1 metal workshop, 1 Palestinian home). The IDF also shells residential areas of Khan Yunis, injuring 7 Palestinian students in their classroom; tightens restrictions on Palestinian movement in the Ramallah area; begins bulldozing agricultural land in Husan w. of Bethlehem for construction of the separation wall. Palestinians fire 4 mortars at Gush Katif, causing no damage or injuries. Jewish settlers fr. Ariel settlement throw stones at, chase off Palestinian farmers working their fields in neighboring Isqaqa village. Hamas mbrs. fire mortars at Neve Dekalim settlement in s. Gaza, causing no damage or injuries. The IDF fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis in response, killing an 8-yr.-old Palestinian girl eating lunch inside her home. The IDF also conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. Hebron; fires rubber-coated steel bullets, percussion grenades, tear gas at Palestinian, Israeli, international demonstrators protesting against the separation wall nr. Hebron. The IDF bars PA presidential candidate Salhi fr. crossing a checkpoint outside Ramallah to go campaign in East Jerusalem; Salhi scuffles with soldiers, is handcuffed and taken for several hours of questioning. The IDF also tightens Palestinian access to Bethlehem, Tulkarm; conducts arrest raids in Dahariyya, detaining 4 Hamas candidates in the upcoming 12/23 municipal elections there; Hamas denounces the arrests as an attempt to manipulate the outcome of municipal elections. The IDF fires shells at a group of Palestinians that enters a closed military zone nr. the Gaza-Egypt border, killing 4 Palestinians, arresting 2 (1 of whom later dies in an Israeli hospital); demolishes a Palestinian home in East Jerusalem; bulldozes several bedouin tents and shacks in Bir Nabala northwest of Jerusalem for construction of the separation wall; raids a PA Health Min. clinic in Bethlehem; fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis; conducts arrest raids in Bayt Rima, Burkin nr.
