In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set fire to 2 cars in Huwwara. Israeli settlers also vandalized 70 olive trees in Yasuf. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers uprooted 30 olive and grape trees and damaged water tanks and solar panels in Shaab al-Butum in the Masafer Yatta area. Israeli settlers also assaulted Palestinians in Kisan. Israeli forces carried out an airstrike from a fighter jet on al-Anasari Mosque in Jenin, killing 2 Palestinians. It was the first time since the Second Intifada that Israel has used fighter jets in the West Bank. Israeli forces shot and killed 5 others, including a minor, during raids in Qabatiya, Tammun, Zawata, and Askar refugee camp. Elsewhere, Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian they claimed had tried to ram Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near al-Arroub refugee camp. Israeli forces also seized a bulldozer and arrested the driver in Qablan. 52 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Ramallah, al-Bireh, Hebron, Nablus, Qabatiya, Kafr Ra’i, Tubas, and Salfit, including al-Bireh mayor Islam al-Tawil. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed a protest in support of Gaza, arresting 6 people. In Gaza, Israeli forces killed nearly 400 Palestinians in airstrikes. Israeli forces also targeted the vicinity of al-Shifa and al-Quds hospitals. An Israeli soldier was killed and 3 wounded in anti-tank fire during a raid in near Khan Yunis. Rockets were fired at Israel causing no new fatalities. In Lebanon, Israeli forces attacked and killed militants in a missile strike that were allegedly firing anti-tank missiles at Israel. In Syria, Israeli forces fired missiles at Damascus and Aleppo international airports, killing 2 airport workers in Damascus and causing enough damage to close both airports. In Egypt, Israeli tank fire hit an Egyptian military post, injuring 7; Israeli called the incident an accident. The Gaza Ministry of Health said as of 5 p.m. at least 4,651 Palestinians had been killed, including at least 1,524 children, and 14,245 had been injured in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza since 10/7, including 47 entire families consisting of 500 people. The UN said that about 70% of Palestinians killed in Gaza are children and women. It is estimated that hundreds are still trapped in rubble. In addition, Israeli media reported that 1,500 Palestinian militants have been killed near Gaza. 92 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7, including 27 children. More than 1,734 have been injured, including at least 360 with live ammunition. Israeli officials recorded no new fatalities, leaving the Israeli death toll at around 1,400 Israelis and foreign nationals; 4,932 have been injured since 10/7. The UN reported that over 1.4 million Palestinians, more than half the population in Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7 and that since 11 p.m. on 10/12 there has been a complete electricity blackout due to the Israeli blockade. At least 26,756 housing units have been destroyed and 139,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7. At least 42% of all housing units have been either destroyed or damaged in Israeli airstrikes. UNRWA said 29 of its staff members have been killed in Gaza since 10/7. AP reported that 17 aid trucks entered Gaza today, including 7 carrying fuel. The WHO said 4 trucks of medical supplies had entered Gaza to help more than 300,000 patients. Israel closed its Public Diplomacy Ministry, allocating the budget of the ministry to rehabilitation of Israeli towns near the Gaza fence. (HA 10/22)

The New York Times reported that the U.S. has asked Israel to suspend its ground invasion of Gaza to allow negotiations over releasing more captives held by Hamas. President Joe Biden reiterated his belief that Israel has a “right to defend itself,” but said it must operate within the laws of war. Biden also discussed the situation in Gaza with Pope Francis. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. “expects a likelihood” of regional escalation and claimed that Hamas is preventing U.S. citizens from leaving Gaza. President Biden, Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, French president Emmanuel Macron, UK prime minister Rishi Sunak, German chancellor Olaf Scholz, and Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni issued a joint statement reaffirming their support for Israel’s war against Hamas, calling for the release of all captives, and calling for Israel to adhere to international law and protect Palestinian civilians. Thousands marched in solidarity with Palestine in Copenhagen, Paris, Sydney, Brussels, Sarajevo, Sao Paolo, Santiago, and elsewhere. 2 people attacked a pro-Palestine demonstration in Skokie near Chicago, 1 attempted to ram protesters, while another, wearing an Israeli flag as a cape, sprayed pepper spray at protesters. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set up 6 mobile homes on Palestinian-owned land in al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya, creating a new settlement outpost. It was reported Israeli forces leveled land in preparation for the settlers to create the outpost. Israeli settlers also set up caravans near Mukhmas. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers also raided ‘Urif, setting fire to homes and a mosque and vandalizing the electric panel supplying the town, cutting power for hours. Security footage also showed the settlers tearing apart a Quran outside of the mosque. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles near Nahalin, Yasuf, and Ras Karkar. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers with a military escort also attacked Palestinians in Jalud, injuring 1 Palestinian with live ammunition and others with stones. Israeli settlers also raided Sinjil and Umm Safa before being repelled by Palestinians. Separately, Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians in Khirbet Tuba in the Masafer Yatta area, causing bruises and damage to property. Israeli forces raided Nablus, punitively demolishing the family home of 1 Palestinian man who allegedly took part in the killing of an Israeli soldier in October 2022; 33 Palestinians were injured by tear gas. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian during a raid in Dheisheh refugee camp. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 4 residential structures in al-Maleh. The Jerusalem District Planning Committee approved proposed plans to build a new American embassy on a plot of land known as the Allenby complex, which is privately owned by several Palestinian families. It is still undetermined if the U.S. will move ahead with its plans to build the embassy on the plot of land because it was seized by Israel from the Palestinian families after the Nakba. (HA 6/22)

U.S. ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said at a Geneva Initiative event in Tel Aviv that the U.S. does “not stand and watch settler violence. I have been very clear and very specific that we will not stand by, and we are pushing the Israelis to take whatever action they need to take to stop those people.” The Saudi foreign ministry also issued a statement condemning the settler attacks. The annual UN report on the treatment of children in conflict zones left out Israel on the list of shame for the killing and mistreatment of Palestinian children. According to the report, 42 Palestinian children were killed and 933 were injured during 2022. Human Rights Watch and the PA expressed disappointment that Israel was left off the list. The chair and deputy chair of the Elders, Mary Robinson and Ban Ki-moon, issued a statement after visiting Israel and Palestine, warning that the “one-state reality is now rapidly extinguishing the prospect of a two-state solution.” The statement said that Robinson and Ban did not hear a “detailed rebuttal of the evidence of apartheid. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted 80 olive tree saplings in Yasuf. Israeli settlers also raided Huwwara, throwing stones at Palestinians and their property, injuring 4 and causing damage. During the raid, Israeli settlers and soldiers were filmed dancing together on the street. Israeli forces shot and injured 4 Palestinians with live ammunition during a raid in Aqabat Jaber refugee camp. Israeli forces also demolished 4 residential structures in Shaab al-Butum, displacing 40 Palestinians and issued stop-work orders for 3 homes and 11 agricultural structures in al-Zawyeh. Haaretz reported that since 2016 planes from Azerbaijan’s Silk Way Airlines have landed at the Israeli Ovda airbase 92 times. It was reported that Israel has been selling arms to Azerbaijan in exchange for the Mossad being allowed to set up a base in the country and Israel receiving oil. (HA 3/6; ALM 3/7)

All crossings to the West Bank and Gaza were closed from 5:00 p.m. by Israel for the Purim holiday. The crossings will reopen on 3/8. (HA 3/5)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers raided Qarawat Bani Hassan, shooting and killing 1 Palestinian man. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling between Nablus and Ramallah, damaging 20. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers vandalized 20 olive trees in Yasuf and uprooted olive tree saplings in Kafr ad-Dik. Armed Israeli settlers also assaulted 1 Palestinian shepherd near Jericho. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces ordered 6 Palestinian families to leave their homes in Jabel Mukaber in preparation for Israeli authorities demolishing the buildings. 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Silwan. In Gaza, 1 rocket was fired at Israel before being intercepted. In Tel Aviv, some 80,000 people demonstrated against the Israeli government. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers attacked Israeli activists from Rabbis for Human Rights working with Palestinians in Burin to plant trees; 7 were injured by the settlers with clubs and other improvised weapons and 1 car was set on fire. Rabbis for Human rights posted a video of the incident on Twitter. Israeli settlers also fenced off 4 dunams (1 acre) of Palestinian land in Kafr ad-Dik and planted it with trees. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers vandalized some 300 olive tree saplings in Deir Sharaf. Israeli settlers also vandalized 90 olive trees and olive saplings in Yasuf and Bidya. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers assaulted 1 Palestinian man and attempted to set his car on fire in Deir Istiya. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, inuring 6 with rubber-coated bullets and others with tear gas. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Beita, injuring 9 with rubber-coated bullets and 52 with tear gas. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan, injuring 17 with tear gas. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian man in Sinjil, detaining him before allowing Palestinians to take him to a hospital in Ramallah. Meanwhile, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian protesters in Hebron, injuring 1 with a rubber-coated bullet and others with tear gas. 6 Palestinians were arrested, including 2 during late-night raids in Sinjil and Jannatah and 4 during a house raid in Zeita. PA forces arrested 3 members of Islamic Jihad during a raid in Beita, including Abdul Raouf al-Jaghoub, a local Islamic Jihad leader. Hamas and Islamic Jihad slammed the PA for the arrests. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers led by deputy mayor of Jerusalem Aryeh King assaulted 1 Palestinian and set up barbed wire around a plot of land belonging to the Salem family, who are threatened by eviction in Sheikh Jarrah; Israeli forces also confiscated Palestinian flags from protesters. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire and fired tear gas at Palestinian farmers east of Dayr al-Balah, Abasan, and al-Qarara; no injuries were reported. Israel’s public security minister Omer Bar-Lev called the incident where activists from Rabbis for Human Rights were attacked by Israeli settlers near Burin “actions of a terror organization.” Public Security Minister Bar-Lev further stated that it is difficult to apprehend the attackers. In the West Bank, 3 Israeli settlers were shot by unknown assailants during a drive-by shooting by an Israeli settlement near Yasuf; 1 of the settlers was said to be in critical condition. The Israeli military subsequently sent more soldiers to the West Bank to partake in the hunt for the perpetrators. Israeli settlers raided Qusra, causing damage to Palestinian-owned houses. Israeli settlers also raided Jalud, setting Palestinian property on fire; Israeli forces intervened on behalf of the Israeli settlers, arresting 11 Palestinians and injuring 4 with rubber-coated bullets. Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian 60-year-old woman, claiming she had attempted to stab the soldiers at a checkpoint north of al-‘Arub refugee camp; a video of the incident did show that the woman was carrying a knife but that she was several feet away from the soldiers and walking very slowly, displaying no imminent threat to the soldiers. Israeli forces also injured 5 Palestinians with live ammunition and arrested 11 during a raid in Beita. 5 other Palestinians were arrested, including 4 during late-night raids in Hizma and 1 at a checkpoint near Jenin. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Shaykh Jarrah demonstrating against the eviction of Palestinians from the neighborhood (see below), tear-gas related injuries were reported and 1 was arrested. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces attacked Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. An Israeli supreme court judge postponed the eviction of 6 Palestinian families from their homes in Shaykh Jarrah until 5/6. The judge said the 6 families, 27 people, had to “reach an agreement” with the Israeli settlers set to displace them from their homes in the East Jerusalem neighborhood. The 6 families rejected having to reach an agreement with the settlers, maintaining that the land belongs to them. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers vandalized 13 Palestinian-owned vehicles, puncturing tires and spraying racist graffiti, in Luban al-Sharqiyya. Elsewhere, near Burin, Israeli settlers set fire to olive trees. Israeli settlers also set up mobile homes, creating a settlement outpost in al-Sawiya. Israeli forces seized 2 Palestinian-owned bulldozers, 1 in Qalqilya and 1 near Ramallah. Israeli forces also uprooted some 200 olive trees in Yasuf. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered a notice for seizure of 3.5 dunams (0.8 acres) of Palestinian-owned land to expand a checkpoint near Tulkarm. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished 1 house in Silwan and 1 store in Wadi al-Juz. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli forces prevented some 200 Israeli activists from helping Palestinians plant trees in Yasuf village. 2 Israeli organizations, Rabbis for Human Rights and Zazim, had planned to help the Palestinians who had many trees vandalized during the harvesting season. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting the U.S. administration’s peace plan in and around Qalqilya, Kafr Qaddum, Qiffin, ‘Azun, and Ramallah; 2 Palestinians were injured by live ammunition, 1 was hit by a tear gas canister to the head and other suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also clashed with Palestinians during raids in Dura and Bayt Umar, causing tear-gas related injuries. 4 Palestinians were arrested at checkpoints near Nablus and al-‘Arub refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces injured 1 Palestinian in Issawiyya during a raid. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian agricultural land east of Dayr al-Balah; no injuries were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian man at a checkpoint near Jenin; the man was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. Israeli forces also punitively demolished, for a second time, the family home in al-Am‘ari refugee camp of a Palestinian accused of killing an Israeli soldier in May 2018. During the demolition, Israeli forces clashed with protesting Palestinians, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also demolished several structures erected by Israeli settlers outside the Yitzhar settlement; the demolition happened after settlers threw stones at Israeli forces on 10/21. Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians harvesting olives in Yasuf and stole the harvest when the Palestinians fled their fields. Israeli forces also forced Palestinian farmers to leave their olive fields while harvesting olives in Luban al-Sharqiyya. 7 Palestinians were arrested, including 3 during the punitive demolition, and 4 during raids in and around Nablus and Jenin.
