In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uprooted olive and fig saplings in Dayr Istya and Haris and uprooted 30 olive saplings in al-Khadir. Israeli undercover forces shot and injured 5 Palestinians using live ammunition during a raid in Qalandia refugee camp; 2 were said to be in critical condition and Israel also said 6 of the Israeli undercover soldiers were lightly injured. Later, 1 other Palestinian was shot and injured by Israeli forces at the Qalandia checkpoint between the West Bank and East Jerusalem; according to Israeli sources, he was shot because he used the vehicle lane to try to pass through the checkpoint on foot. Israeli forces also shot and injured 3 Palestinians and arrested 4 others during raids in Dheisheh refugee camp. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 2 structures near Bethlehem and delivered 1 demolition order for 1 tent in the Jordan Valley. 21 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Qalqilya, Bethlehem, Qalandia refugee camp, al-‘Izzariya, and Yatta. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers threatened Palestinians with a gun on the Palestinians’ property in Silwan. 3 Palestinians were arrested in the Old City and Silwan. The PA health ministry said that the World Health Organization is sending 5,000 COVID-19 testing swabs to Gaza, as Gaza is facing a severe shortages on COVID-19 testing material. (WAFA 12/7)

PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said that the districts of Hebron, Bethlehem, Nablus, and Tulkarm would be placed on a 1-week lockdown from 12/10 to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus in those districts. (WAFA 12/7)

A member of the UAE’s ruling family, son of the UAE president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Nahyan bought a 50 percent stake in Beitar Jerusalem, a soccer team known for extreme racism among its supporters. Beitar Jerusalem is the only team in the top tier of Israeli soccer not to have employed an Arab soccer player and its fans regularly chant “Death to Arabs” and verbally degrade the Prophet Muhammad during games. IDF troops shoot and injure a Palestinian minor outside the Gush Etzion settlement near Ramallah after he allegedly stabs and critically injures 2 Israeli settlers. One of the settlers succumbs to his injuries soon after the confrontation. IDF troops raid the alleged attacker’s home in Yatta village near Hebron late at night, taking measurements and threatening punitive demolition. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 7 Palestinians and confiscate some property during raids near Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron, and Nablus; and patrol near Bethlehem, Tulkarm, and Hebron. Israeli settlers chase Palestinian shepherds from a field near Jericho. Settlers also congregate on the main Nablus-Ramallah road in the evening to protest the alleged stabbing attack near Ramallah earlier in the day. Some throw rocks at Palestinian vehicles in the area, causing minor damage. In East Jerusalem, dozens of right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif in the morning. Palestinian minors throw stones at a bus carrying Palestinian prisoners in Qalandia refugee camp, sparking minor clashes with Israeli forces in the area; 2 Palestinian are injured and 2 are arrested. Late at night, Israeli forces arrest 9 Palestinians during raids in Issawiyya. Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops violently disperse hundreds of Palestinians gathering to continue the Great March of Return for a 3d day in a row near Rafah and Khan Yunis; 1 Palestinian is injured. Israeli forces stage a multi-stage “controlled detonation” of an underground tunnel leading from the Khan Yunis area of Gaza into Israel, killing 12 Hamas and PIJ fighters, and injuring at least 18 more. An IDF spokesperson says that the detonation was a preemptive move because the tunnel did not yet pose a threat to Israel, claims that the Palestinians were only killed because they rushed into the tunnel after the detonation and suffered smoke inhalation, and calls the tunnel a “gross violation of Israeli sovereignty.” A PIJ spokesperson says the group is “weighing its options” in response to the attack (PIJ reportedly built the tunnel). In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 2 Palestinians during early morning raids in Jenin refugee camp, sparking clashes with stone-throwing residents. Amid the clashes, Israeli soldiers shoot and injure a Palestinian garbage truck driver. IDF troops also arrest 11 Palestinians during late-night raids near Ramallah, Nablus, Hebron, Qalqilya, and Jenin, and patrol in and around Hebron, Salfit, and Tulkarm. Israeli settlers open fire on Palestinian farmers harvesting olives south of Hebron, causing no damage or injuries. In East Jerusalem, undercover Israeli forces open fire on 2 Palestinians at the entrance to Qalandia refugee camp, injuring 1 before arresting both. Three Palestinians are injured in the ensuing clashes. Israeli forces also arrest 3 Palestinians during late-night raids in Silwan, Shu‘fat, and Hizma, and violently disperse a sit-in and dismantle a protest tent Palestinians set up in al-Bustan in 2009. In East Jerusalem, approximately 25 Israeli settlers tour Haram al-Sharif. Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian during a raid in Qalandia refugee camp. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land near Juhur al-Dik. Following a day of punitive demolitions and clashes in Qalandia refugee camp (r.c.), thousands of Palestinians march in the funeral of the 2 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces the previous day. Later, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops clash with stone-throwers in the camp, injuring 5 Palestinians. Israeli forces demolish 9 residential structures and animal barns nr. Hebron early in the morning, and later clash with Palestinian protesters in the area. Similarly, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian protesters w. of Qalqilya (where similar protests were conducted on 11/13 and 11/15) and outside Beit El settlement nr. Ramallah; at least 15 Palestinians are injured, including 2 journalists. During the day, Israeli forces patrol in 1 village each nr. Salfit and Nablus, and they conduct late-night house searches and raids in ‘Ayn Bayt al-Ma’ r.c. as well as nr. Nablus, Hebron, Tulkarm, and Jenin, arresting 13 Palestinians. Israeli settlers assault Palestinians harvesting olives nr. Salfit, driving them off their land but causing no injuries. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 2 Palestinians on raids in al-Tur. PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet outlaws the Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, citing the group’s “dangerous incitement.” After the announcement, Israeli forces arrest a senior mbr. of the movement during a raid in Umm al-Fahm, and Israeli courts issue orders to shut down 17 organizations and groups that operate on behalf of the movement. As the quarter opens, Israel’s near total blockade of Gaza enters its 21st month, since Hamas’s takeover of Gaza in 6/07. Israel continues to bar exports fr. Gaza, strictly limit imports, and ban all but VIPs and emergency medical cases fr. transiting the border. Imports include limited commodities and enough staple goods and fuel for electricity, emergency services, and cooking to preclude a humanitarian crisis, but are insufficient to meet daily needs, adequately maintain basic services, or repair the heavy damage fr. Israel’s 23-day assault on Gaza, Operation Cast Lead (OCL), which ended on 1/18/09. Today, Palestinians fire 2 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) respond with 2 air strikes on tunnels on the Rafah border, causing no injuries. In Bayt Lahiya, 1 Palestinian scavenging scrap metal is killed, 4 are injured when they accidentally trigger unexploded IDF ordnance (UXO). In the West Bank, the IDF bulldozes 20 olive trees on a plot of Palestinian land on the s. border of Ni‘lin, declaring it a closed military zone; conducts synchronized late-night arrest raids, house searches into Tulkarm, neighboring Nur Shams refugee camp (r.c.), and 5 nearby villages; conducts similar late-night arrest raids, house searches nr. Bethlehem, Hebron; closes a gate in the separation wall nr. Dahiyat al-Barid (located btwn. the separation wall and the Green Line nr. Jerusalem), forcing villagers to travel 1–2 hrs. through the Qalandia crossing to access the rest of the West Bank. The Israeli government authorizes the confiscation of 1,700 dunams (d.; 4 d. = 1 acre) of Palestinian land in the villages of al-Ma‘sara, Umm Salamuna, and Wadi al-Nas nr. Bethlehem for expansion of Efrat and Gush Etzion settlements (2,500 new housing units, increasing the settler population there fr. 9,000 to 30,000).
