The IDF conducts arrest raids in Tubas; fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis; bulldozes 39 dunams of land in al-Bureij r.c. The PSF raids a mosque in Aida r.c. nr. Bethlehem, arresting Hamas mbrs. thought to be plotting a suicide bombing. Shin Bet arrests Palestinian hospital worker and chemist Rashid al-Nimr, cousin of PLO Exec. Comm. mbr. Faruq al-Qaddumi, on charges of selling Hamas 6 containers of hydrogen peroxide for use in building bombs, transporting the chemicals by ambulance, evading the IDF by hiding in hospitals. The IDF imposes a curfew on Ramallah, closes Qalandia checkpoint based on security concerns; continues to surround all Palestinian cities, making it difficult for Palestinian workers to take advantage of eased permit restrictions for entering Israel (see 6/1). The IDF says that it plans to deport fr. Hebron to Gaza several relatives of Muhammad Qawasmi, the 3/5 Haifa suicide bomber, claiming they either knew of or assisted in planning the bombing. An Israeli wounded in the 3/5 attack dies of her injuries, bringing the toll to 17. The IDF demolishes 5 Palestinian homes in al-Mughraqa, 3 in Rafah, 1 in Jenin, 1 in al-Qarara (killing 1 Palestinian, wounding 3 in the operation); fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis, Rafah; conducts arrest raids in Hebron, Nablus (detaining a wheelchair-bound Palestinian); fires shells at an ambulance in Rafah, injuring the driver. The IDF also arrests senior PFLP leader and PLO Exec. Comm. mbr. Adnan Jabir in Bethlehem, making him the 4th PLO Exec. The IDF fatally shoots 2 Palestinians attempting to sneak into Israel fr. Gaza; fatally shoots 1 Palestinian in Tulkarm when he fails to heed orders to halt; opens fire on Palestinian stone throwers in Nablus, injuring 12; demolishes a Palestinian home in Nablus; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Abud, Tamun, Tura. PLO Exec. Comm. gen. secy. and senior PA negotiator Mahmud Abbas says that the PA is calling for a 1-yr. demilitarization of the intifada. The AMB, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) reject the call. A day after Hamas detonated a roadside bomb under a tank, killing 4 Israeli soldiers, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announces plans to crack down on Hamas in Gaza. In Gaza City, 6 senior Hamas mbrs. are killed, 3 bystanders are wounded when a car laden with explosives blows up; Hamas accuses Israel of remote detonating the device, assassinating the men. The IDF clashes with Palestinians in Nablus during a raid on an office building, leaving 3 Palestinians dead, 23 wounded; senior Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) mbr. and PLO Exec. Comm. mbr. Taysir Khalid, three other Palestinians are arrested in the raid. The IDF also fires on Palestinians in Jabaliya, killing 2 Palestinians, wounding 9; conducts arrest raids in Beitunia (targeting Hamas), Tulkarm (targeting Islamic Jihad, the tanzim); bulldozes 42 dunams (4 dunams 1 acre) of Palestinian land, 3 structures nr. Aley Sinai settlement. The Palestinian Authority (PA) says that Palestinians in n. Bethlehem have received notices fr. the IDF that 14 dunams of their land, including the Rachel’s Tomb area and 40 Palestinian homes, will be annexed to Jerusalem as part of the security fence construction. The IDF raids the offices and laboratories of Hebron, Palestinian Polytechnic Universities in Hebron (see 1/8); welds shut doors, gates; declared the schools closed on the grounds that they assisted in the “recruitment, training, and instruction of hundreds of militant activists,” including allegedly teaching students how to make bombs. The IDF also raids a West Bank branch of the Arab Bank outside Jerusalem, demanding the money fr. 4 accounts allegedly used by “terrorists”; reports differ as to whether the bank turned over the $7,000 in those accounts; fatally shoots a Palestinian bystander during an arrest raid in Qabatiyya; fatally shoots a 16-yr.-old Palestinian violating a predawn curfew in Tulkarm; opens fire on stone-throwing Palestinian youths on their way to school in Tulkarm, killing a 2d 16-yr.-old Palestinian; bulldozes 4 Palestinian homes in Rafah, 3 in Bayt Hanun, 2 in Qabatiyya, 1 in Bayt Fajjar; searches, vandalizes another 9 homes in Rafah; fires on residential areas of Khan Yunis. In the 1^st anniversary of the PSF’s preventive arrest of PFLP Secy.-Gen. Ahmad Saadat, 100s of Palestinians (including mbrs. of the PLO and Fatah Exec. In response to the 1/5 AMB bombing, Israel says it will bar a Palestinian delegation fr. leaving the occupied territories to attend a Quartet mtg. on PA reforms in London on 1/14; bar the PLO Central Comm. fr. meeting on 1/9 to ratify the constitution of a future Palestinian state, which contains many of the reforms demanded by Israel, the U.S.; “clamp down” on Palestinian universities, colleges. Meanwhile, the IDF fires on residential areas of Bayt Lahia; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Halhul; makes arrest raids in, around Bayt Hanina; demolishes 3 Palestinian homes and a store in Khan Yunis, 1 in Bayt Dajan, a 1 in Bayt Furik, plus a factory in Gaza City.
