For a 3d day in a row, thousands of Palestinians gather at protests across the oPt and Israel against U.S. pres. Trump’s 12/6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the First Intifada. Israeli forces violently disperse them in East Jerusalem, Ramallah, Hebron, Huwwara near Nablus, Aida refugee camp and nearby Bethlehem, Tulkarm, and along Gaza’s border near Khan Yunis, Rafah, Gaza City, and Jabaliya refugee camp; at least 31 Palestinians are injured and at least 17 are arrested. Meanwhile, IDF troops arrest 1 Palestinian during a late-night raid near Hebron. Israeli settlers damage approximately 20 olive trees on Palestinian land near Nablus. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Jabaliya refugee camp and twice near Bayt Lahiya, causing no damage or injuries. Israeli forces punitively seal the entrances to Dayr Nizam village near Ramallah following repeated incidents of Palestinian youths throwing stones at Israeli settler vehicles in the area. Elsewhere in the West Bank, Israeli forces demolish a water pipeline serving Palestinian communities near Tubas. IDF troops arrest 13 Palestinians during late-night raids near Tulkarm, Hebron, Jenin, and Ramallah; arrest 3 Palestinian youths accused of stone-throwing in central Hebron, and patrol in and around Hebron and Tulkarm. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian vehicles driving outside Huwwara near Nablus, injuring 2 Palestinians. Settlers also attack Palestinian farmers working in the area, causing no damage or injuries. In East Jerusalem, a Palestinian demolishes his own shop in Silwan to avoid paying Israeli demolition fees. Israeli forces arrest 6 Palestinians during raids in Silwan and Anata refugee camp. Following weeks of tension in the wake of the 10/30 tunnel demolition (see Update), the IDF raises its alert level across Israel, triggering several precautionary measures in case PIJ retaliates. The Egyptian government is reportedly pressuring PIJ not to escalate the situation. (HA 11/13; YA 11/14)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinians harvesting olives outside Huwwara village near Nablus, causing no injuries. They also set fire to some of the trees. IDF troops arrest 16 Palestinians during latenight raids in and around Ramallah, Jenin, Tulkarm, and Hebron. In East Jerusalem, a group of Israeli settlers tour Haram al-Sharif. Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian during a raid in Silwan. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Jabaliya refugee camp, causing no damage or injuries. An Israeli settler shoots and kills 1 Palestinian and injures another outside Huwwara village nr. Nablus. A video of the incident shows that he drove his car into a group of Palestinians who then surrounded him, brandishing stones, and he opened fire. The shooting occurs amid clashes between IDF troops and Palestinians marching in solidarity with the 1,500-plus hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners observing the Dignity Strike. The IDF decides not to investigate the ramming and shooting as a criminal incident. Later in the day, the IDF shuts down the nearby Huwwara checkpoint while dozens of settlers gather to “show their presence” to Palestinians in the area. IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians protesting the Huwwara killing in Qalandia refugee camp (r.c.), al-Bireh, and Qalqilya; 5 Palestinians are injured by live ammunition and 1 is arrested. They also arrest 3 Palestinians during raids nr. Ramallah and Nablus, and patrol during the day nr. Hebron and Salfit. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops conduct raids in Silwad village nr. Ramallah, sparking clashes; 1 Palestinian is seriously injured and 2 are arrested. Israeli forces demolish 8 coal production buildings and 2 sheds nr. Jenin. (HA, MNA, WAFA 5/18)

In the n. Jordan Valley, Israeli forces confiscate 2 Palestinian water pumps in Khirbat al-Dayr and demolish a new well in Bardala. Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian vehicles outside Huwwara nr. Nablus, seriously injuring 1 Palestinian before Israel Defense Forces (IDF) disperse the crowd. IDF troops also arrest 13 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Hebron, and Nablus; and patrol during the day nr. Nablus and Hebron. Two Palestinian children are killed when they accidentally trigger a piece of unexploded Israeli ordnance in al-Zarnuq village nr. Beersheba. Elsewhere in Israel, Israeli forces demolish the Bedouin village al-‘Araqib for the 112th time since 2010. In the West Bank, the IDF violently disperses Palestinians gathering outside Qalandia r.c. in solidarity with the 1,500-plus Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike since 4/17 (the Dignity Strike); 4 Palestinians are injured. IDF troops shoot and critically injure a Palestinian outside Huwwara village nr. Nablus after he allegedly attempts to stab 1 of them. They also conduct raids in Rumana nr. Jenin and Nabi Salih nr. Ramallah, sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians in each; there are no serious injuries. The IDF arrests 2 Palestinians during further raids nr. Nablus and Hebron, and patrols nr. Qalqilya and Hebron. Israeli forces demolish several structures in the Jenin-area village of ‘Araba and 6 food stands in Ni‘lin nr. Ramallah. Israel’s Housing Ministry has revived plans for the construction of 10,000 housing units in a Jewish settlement in the West Bank nr. Qalandia, according to a report today in Haaretz. The Israeli press says that the construction was approved years ago, but later frozen because of pressure from former U.S. pres. Barack Obama. The plans are reportedly to be unveiled in 5/2017. Approximately 100 Israeli settlers smash windows and attempt to break into a home in ‘Urif village nr. Nablus before Palestinian residents of the village force them away. IDF troops then violently disperse the residents of ‘Urif; 4 Palestinians and 1 IDF soldier are injured. Israeli settlers also throw stones at Palestinian homes and vehicles in nearby Huwwara, lightly injuring 1 Palestinian and causing no serious damage. Meanwhile, the IDF arrests 11 Palestinians and issues 4 arrest summons during raids in and around Bethlehem and Tulkarm; and patrols nr. Hebron, Qalqilya, and Nablus during the day. A group of Fatah-affiliated prisoners in Israel’s Ramon Prison join the Dignity Strike that approx. 1,500 prisoners declared on 4/17. The IPS moves several PFLP leaders to solitary confinement. Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinians gather across Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank to demonstrate in solidarity with the prisoners. A Hamas fighter suffers fatal injuries in an “accidental explosion” in n. Gaza, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. After he dies on 2/5, Hamas will say he was injured during unspecified “preparations.” Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops open fire on Palestinian farmers working nr. Gaza City. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. Bayt Lahiya, Rafah, and twice nr. Jabaliya r.c. No injuries are reported in any of these incidents. In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 5 Palestinians during raids in Qalqilya, Hebron, and nr. Nablus, and patrol nr. Jenin, Nablus, Ramallah, Salfit, and Hebron. Dozens of Israeli settlers enter Huwwara village nr. Nablus and throw stones at Palestinian vehicles. When they start targeting homes, Palestinian residents drive them from the village. Israeli forces shoot and kill Fadi al-Qunbar, a Palestinian truck driver, outside the Old City after he rams a group of Israelis, killing 4 IDF soldiers and injuring at least 13 other people. Israeli forces then conduct raids on the alleged attacker’s home in Jabal Mukabir, interrogating his family for hours, threatening punitive demolition, and establishing checkpoints in the area. Their prolonged presence in the neighborhood sparks clashes with stonethrowing Palestinians; there are no serious injuries. After Israeli PM Netanyahu accuses the alleged attacker of supporting ISIS, Israel’s security cabinet decides to use administrative detention against any persons suspected of committing a crime who also identify as supporters of the group. The cabinet also decides to punitively demolish the attacker’s home as soon as possible, and to close down the attacker’s neighborhood, Jabal Mukabir. Meanwhile, the attacker’s family says he was motivated by U.S. pres.-elect Trump’s pledge to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “He was very angry, and said transferring the embassy would lead to war,” his cousin says. Israel settlers assault and injure a number of Palestinians outside Huwwara village nr. Nablus and throw stones at Palestinian cars driving nearby. The IDF delivers stop-work orders to 11 Palestinian homes under construction nr. Bethlehem. IDF troops conduct raids nr. Nablus, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians outside Bayt Furik village; 1 Palestinian is arrested. They arrest 9 more Palestinians during late-night raids in Jenin and nr.
