In the West Bank, Israeli settlers blocked a road between Jerusalem and Hebron. Israeli settlers also vandalized 10 olive trees, 2 water tanks, and an irrigation system in Wadi Qana. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Bayt Dajan; 1 Palestinian sustained fractures from a fall after being chased by the forces. Israeli forces also raided Luban al-Sharqiyya, leading to tear-gas related injuries and 1 arrest of a minor. Elsewhere, Israeli forces handed demolition orders for 4 commercial structures in Dayr Qadis. Israeli forces also blocked several roads in the Masafer Yatta area and sealed entrances to Beita. 23 Palestinians were arrested, including 19 during late-night raids in Ni‘lin and Bayt Umar, 2 were arrested and their car seized in Hebron, and 2 were arrested on a street in Jenin. The Israeli supreme court upheld a decision by the Israeli military to punitively demolish the home of an alleged attacker in Turmus ‘Ayya, despite the alleged attacker not having lived in the house for years as he became a resident of the U.S. before he allegedly shot 3 Israeli settlers on 5/2; the demolition will displace his wife and children, who all have U.S. citizenship. The Israeli civil administration approved 31 zoning plans for settlement expansion in Maale Adumim, Alfei Manashe, Elkana, Havat Sde Bar, and Yitzhar, including housing units, a commercial center, and a park. Chairperson of the Joint List Ayman Odeh criticized the new Israeli government, saying that “the left is surrendering to the right . . . the right continues to sabotage the chances of peace and to deepen the occupation, repression, and dispossession of millions of Palestinians.” (AP, HA 6/23)

A poll conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 51% of American democrats think that the U.S. is not supportive enough of Palestinians. Of all the participants in the poll, 32% thought that the U.S. is not supportive enough of Palestinians, while 37% thought the U.S. support was as it should be. (AP, HA 6/23)

Haaretz reported that the Israeli police have not opened an investigation into the killing of a Palestinian shot by an Israeli settler on 5/14 in al-Rihiya. (HA 6/23)

Israeli settlers also raided several Palestinian hamlets in Masafer Yatta; no injuries were reported. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 6 with rubber-coated bullets; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also clashed with Palestinians during raids in Jaba‘, leading to tear-gas related injuries. 1 Palestinian was arrested in Hebron. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Tur and Issawiyya. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. Thousands of Israelis demonstrated against Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu near his official residence for the 30th Saturday in a row. The protesters are demanding that Netanyahu steps down due to the corruption cases against him, the Israeli economy, and his COVID-19 response. (HA 1/16)

Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid said in an interview that he is ready to form a government supported by Palestinian-Israeli members of Knesset and that he wanted to do so after the last Israeli election but his then coalition partner, and now deputy prime minister and defense minister, Benny Gantz, refused. In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler was injured when her car was hit with stones; Israeli forces subsequently arrested 20 Palestinians in nearby Dayr Nidham, claiming they were connected to the stone-throwing, and closed all exits and entrances to the city. Israeli settlers raided the Nahalin area, attempting to uproot trees before they were stopped by Palestinians protecting their land. Israeli settlers also threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Luban al-Sharqiyya, causing damage. Israeli forces pushed and injured 1 Palestinian child in Sinjil. 3 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Jaba‘ and Ya‘bad. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces handed 1 Palestinian family an eviction order in Silwan and told them to pay $2,200 in legal fees. 1 Palestinian was arrested in Issawiyya. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian agricultural lands east of Khuza‘a; no injuries were reported. The Palestinian Prisoner's Society said in a statement that 30 new cases of the COVID-19 virus had been registered among Palestinian prisoners at the Ktzi’ot prison in Israel. These bring the total COVID cases among Palestinian prisoners to 171 since the start of the pandemic. (WAFA, WAFA 1/3)

Israeli prosecutors said that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had requested that the news site Walla, in 315 incidents, cover Netanyahu and his family positively and his political opponents negatively. The allegations are part of the corruption cases against Netanyahu, who in 1 of the cases is accused of promoting regulations favorable to the owner of Bezeq telecom company in exchange for positive coverage on the Walla news site. Israeli settlers also uprooted 35 Palestinian-owned olive trees in al-Twana. 8 Palestinians were arrested during raids in Tura al-Ghabiyya, Nablus, and Hebron; 1 Palestinian was assaulted by the raiding Israeli forces in Tura al-Ghabiyya and was treated at a hospital. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently dispersed a Christmas celebration caravan in Bayt Hanina. 1 Palestinian family of 4 was handed a demolition order for their 2-story house in Silwan. 4 Palestinians were arrested in and around the Old City and Issawiyya. U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. was inaugurating “a virtual presence post effective immediately” as the U.S. continues work to establish a physical consulate in the Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. The U.S. announced on 12/10 that it recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara in return for Morocco normalizing ties with Israel. (AJ, HA 12/24)

In the West Bank, Israeli settler set up a mobile home on Palestinian land east of Hebron. Israeli forces violently dispersed an anti-settlement protest in al-Mughayyir, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also violently dispersed anti-settlement protests in Kafr Qaddum, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians at an olive tree planting event in Bayt Dajan, injuring 2 with rubber-coated bullets while 15 others suffered tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also denied Palestinians access to their land near Salfit. Palestinians clashed with PA security forces during several demonstrations against COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in and around Hebron, leading to tear-gas related injuries. 6 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Nablus, al-Bireh, al-‘Izzariya, Luban al-Sharqiyya, and Huwwara. 1 Palestinian man died of wounds sustained after being shot by Israeli forces at the Qalandia checkpoint on 8/16. The man, who had a hearing disability, was shot after he did not stop when told by Israeli forces. (WAFA 12/11; PCHR 12/17)

A member of Hezbollah was sentenced to 5 consecutive life sentences for killing former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri and 21 others in 2005. The man, Salim Jamil Ayyash, was sentenced in absentia by the UN-backed Lebanon Tribunal. (AJ, HA, REU 12/11)

A group of 22 Republican members of the U.S. House sent a letter to U.S. president Donald Trump urging the president to declassify a State Department report mandated by Congress in 2012 that distinguishes between Palestinian refugees born in Palestine before 1948 and those born outside of Palestine. The 22 Republicans said in the letter that they do not believe that descendants of Palestinian refugees born in Palestine before 1948 can be considered refugees and called the Right of Return a “fiction” that should “end.” (Rep. In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and injured a Palestinian man using rubber-coated bullets as he was trying to enter Israel at a checkpoint southwest of Jenin. Elsewhere in Hebron, a video showed Israeli soldiers assaulting 1 Palestinian man and his 5-year-old boy. Israeli forces also delivered a stop-work notice for a house near Ya‘bad. Israeli settlers stole olive harvests from Palestinian farmers in Luban al-Sharqiyya. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Bayt Umar, and Silwad. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian-owned home in Silwan. 2 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Issawiyya. The Israeli supreme court upheld the Israeli government’s decision to expel U.S. citizen and Israel and Palestine Director at the Human Rights Watch Omar Shakir. The European Union donated $17.84 million to the PA to help make payments for PA civil servants and pensioners as the PA faces economic hardship due to Israel withholding part of its tax revenue. (WAFA 11/5)

Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian cars traveling near Luban al-Sharqiyya, causing damage to several vehicles. 6 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Bethlehem and Ramallah. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian family in Jabal Mukabir demolished their own home to avoid exorbitant Israeli-imposed fees. Israeli forces raided Issawiyya, leading to clashes with local Palestinians. 1 Palestinian was injured by a Molotov cocktail thrown at the Israeli forces; 8 Palestinians were arrested. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen on 2 separate occasions 3 nautical miles from Jabalia. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian farmland; no injuries were reported. In Israel, 14 Israeli soldiers were arrested for attacking bedouins in southern Israel on 10/16. After a day of violence and intense IDF activity across the Ramallah region on 12/13, tensions remain high in the West Bank. The Israeli authorities maintain the closure of all major roads in the area while they search for the perpetrator of the attack that left 2 Israeli soldiers dead. One Palestinian is killed during clashes sparked by an IDF raid in Jalazun refugee camp. Six Palestinians are injured during clashes sparked by a similar raid in nearby al-Bireh. Two more Palestinians are injured when IDF troops violently disperse a protest outside nearby al-Mughayyir. Separately, a Palestinian stabs and lightly injures an Israeli soldier at an IDF post outside the Beit El settlement; the soldier moderately injures the Palestinian in the ensuing confrontation (the Palestinian will turn himself in to the IDF on 12/15). Unidentified assailants throw rocks at Israeli troops outside al-Bireh, moderately injuring 1 soldier. The IDF then seals off the main Ramallah-Nablus road and conducts raids in the area searching for the assailants. IDF troops shoot and injure 5 Palestinians during clashes sparked by a raid in al-Laban near Nablus; violently disperse Friday protests against the Israeli occupation in central Hebron, Luban al-Sharqiyya near Nablus, and Bil‘in near Ramallah (4 Palestinians are injured); arrest 1 Palestinians and issue 1 arrest summons during additional raids near Hebron; and patrol near Hebron, Bethlehem, Jenin, Nablus, Tulkarm, and Salfit. Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian vehicles near Nablus and Qalqilya, and open fire on a Palestinian passersby in Jalazun refugee camp (1 Palestinian is injured and several vehicles are damaged).
