In the West Bank, Israeli settlers attacked a Palestinian mother and her daughter in Hebron using pepper spray. Israeli forces seized a truck and a bulldozer in Bayt Umar near Hebron. Israeli forces arrested 14 Palestinians, including 1 disabled teenager by al-Ibrahimi Mosque; 9 during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Qalqilya, and Ramallah; 3 at a northern entrance to Bethlehem; and 1 at a flying checkpoint north of Tulkarm. Meanwhile, Israeli forces seized tents and uprooted trees in Khirbat Tana and dismantled residential shacks and a barn near Tubas. During the incident near Tubas, a B’tselem fieldworker was detained and his car was seized. In East Jerusalem, 7 Palestinians were arrested at the Haram al-Sharif compound and in Silwan. Approximately 232 Israeli settlers with military escort toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire at Palestinian bird hunters east of Khan Yunis; no injuries were reported. 1 Palestinian trying to cross the Gaza fence was injured by Israeli live ammunition; he was hospitalized and interrogated before being released on 12/24. Israel’s civil administration said it had reversed its initial decision to not allow any Christians from Gaza enter Jerusalem and the West Bank for Christmas celebrations. It said that all 950 applicants would be allowed to travel, pending a security screening. (HA 12/23)

The Israeli high court of justice criticized the Israeli government’s decision to return $63 million from the Palestinian Workers’ Sick Fund to Israeli employers. The $63 million were accumulated by payments from Palestinian workers in Israel to the sick fund for paid sick leave. The court ordered a freeze in payment to the Israeli employers and gave the Israeli state 3 months to respond to the justices’ questions. (HA 12/26)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers razed Palestinian-owned land in Burin using a bulldozer. Israeli forces seized 1 Palestinian-owned vehicle in Sawahara al-Sharqiyya and demolished 1 shack and 2 residential structures near Abu Nawwar. 11 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Nablus, Bethlehem, and Hebron; 2 others were arrested at a school in Urif. Israeli forces conducted military drills in the northern part of the Jordan Valley. Israeli forces also sealed off an entrance to Nahalin; 2 other entrances to the village are permanently closed. In Gaza, Israeli forces fired tear gas at agricultural lands, forcing farmers to leave the area east of Khan Yunis. 1 Palestinian was arrested at the Erez crossing. In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian was killed and 1 injured when an Israeli bulldozer crashed into a vehicle west of Hebron. Israeli forces punitively demolished 4 homes of alleged attackers in Bayt Kahil near Hebron, demolished 1 Palestinian-owned house in Asira, and razed a tract of farmland near Husan. Israeli forces also stopped PA minister of culture Atef Abu Saif at the Qalandia checkpoint and told him he was banned from East Jerusalem. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Jenin, Ramallah, Hebron and, Nablus. Israeli settlers set fire to a Palestinian-owned vehicle and vandalized houses with racist graffiti northwest of Ramallah, cut 30 olive trees in al-Sawiya, and vandalized 4 vehicles in Dayr ‘Ammar. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested in the Old City. In Israel, 40 vehicles were vandalized and racist graffiti was sprayed on walls in the predominantly Palestinian town of Jaljulia. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his government will transfer $11.5 million for West Bank settlements during a meeting with settler councils. Prime Minister Netanyahu’s announcement comes 1 week after he was indicted in the 3 corruption cases against him. (HA 11/29)

The far-right government that took power after the coup in Bolivia announced that it will renew Bolivia’s diplomatic ties with Israel. The 2 counties have not had diplomatic ties since Operation Cast Lead in 2009. (HA 11/28)

The governments of the Brussels and Wallonia regions of Belgium said they had pulled out of a planned trade delegation going to Israel, citing Israeli violations of international law and lack of progress in the peace process. (HA 12/1)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed the weekly anti-settlement protest in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 2 Palestinians with rubber-coated bullets. Israeli forces also confiscated a bulldozer belonging to the Taqqua municipality. Israeli settlers assaulted a Palestinian man on his land in Baytin and smashed the windshields of 3 Palestinian-owned cars in the area. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a house raid in Issawiyya. An Israeli court ordered the eviction of 18 Palestinians from their home in Silwan, handing their property to the Jewish National Fund (JNF). The eviction order ends a 30-year-long legal battle between the family and the JNF. In Gaza, 109 Palestinians were injured during the 75th Great March of Return protest, including 52 injuries by Israeli live ammunition. In the West Bank, 2 Israeli settlers were wounded by an unknown assailant attacking them with a knife in ‘Azun; ‘Azun village was subsequently sealed off by Israeli forces. Israeli forces delivered a stop-work order on a road near Nablus and confiscated a bulldozer. 2 Palestinians were arrested, including 1 during a late-night raid near Ramallah and 1 in Hebron. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was injured after being shot by Israeli forces during clashes in Issawiyya. In Gaza, after 2 Palestinians were killed during the Great March of Return protest on 9/6, Israeli forces reported that a drone had dropped explosives in Israel, causing no injuries but damaging a military vehicle. Israeli forces then fired at targets in Gaza, causing damage, but no injuries were reported. 3 Palestinians were arrested after they reportedly crossed into Israel. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen; no injuries or arrests were reported. In the West Bank, Israeli forces confiscated a bulldozer in Kafr Qaddum. Near Yatta, Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian-owned residential structure, displacing a family of 7. In al-Za’ayem, Israeli forces demolished foundations for a residential structure under construction. Elsewhere, in Salim near Jenin, Israeli forces injured a Palestinian at a military court after he allegedly threw a firebomb at the court building; the man was hospitalized in Israel immediately after. East of Hebron, Israeli settlers from the Kiryat Arba settlement, along with Israeli military escort, razed 24 dunams (5.9 acres) of Palestinian-owned farmland. Hamas carried out a military drill “to test the readiness of security forces,” according to Hamas’s Interior Ministry. Hamas also imposed a temporary maritime blockade during the drill, preventing fishermen from working. (HA 7/9)

Hours after Palestinians fly 2 incendiary balloons into southern Israel from Gaza, causing no damage or injuries, the Israeli Air Force conducts air strikes on “a number of terror targets in a Hamas military compound in the northern Gaza Strip,” according to an IDF spokesperson. Also along Gaza’s border, IDF troops open fire on a group of Palestinian minors approaching the border fence near al-Bureij refugee camp; 2 Palestinians are injured. Also, Israeli forces conduct a limited incursion to level land near al-Bureij refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces violently disperse Palestinian students and teachers outside a school in Shu‘fat refugee camp; there are no serious injuries. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers throw stones at a Palestinian school in Urif village near Nablus, sparking minor confrontations with residents of the area; 1 Palestinian student is lightly injured and several Palestinian vehicles are damaged. IDF troops shoot and injure 2 Palestinians amid clashes sparked by a late-night raid near Hebron; arrest 6 Palestinians and issue 1 arrest summons during further late-night raids near Nablus and Ramallah; and patrol near Nablus, Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Hebron. A delegation of senior Egyptian officials arrives in Gaza to meet with their counterparts in Hamas. The Egyptians are reportedly attempting to ease tensions along Gaza’s border fence, which have been escalating in recent weeks. They reportedly convey a message to Hamas from the Israeli government, threatening a major escalation should Hamas not limit the ongoing protests. (HA, YA 3/5; TOI 3/6)

In the West Bank, IDF troops shoot and injure 1 Palestinian during clashes sparked by a raid near Jenin; arrest 5 Palestinians during further raids near Bethlehem, Hebron, and Jenin; and patrol near Nablus and Hebron. Israeli settlers bulldoze 30 dunams (approximately 7.5 acres) of Palestinian land south of Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces assault and injure a Palestinian and arrest a 2d during a raid in Jabal Mukabir. They arrest 3 more Palestinians during raids in Qalandia refugee camp and Qatanna. At a formal ceremony in New York City, PA president Mahmoud Abbas assumes chairmanship of the UN’s Group of 77 and China, pledging to “pursue the path paved by previous chairs” and to “strive to carry forth the legacy and traditions of our group in addressing the challenges before us for achieving progress and prosperity for our peoples and states.” The group comprises 134 member states, making it the UN’s largest bloc. Meanwhile, PA foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki says that the Palestinians still intend to move forward with their bid for full membership at the UN this month, despite a likely U.S. veto.
