The Israeli press reports that the troops came under fire from unidentified assailants in Gaza as they made the arrests. Israeli tanks then shell 3 Hamas military sites in Bayt Lahiya, killing 1 Palestinian, critically injuring a second, and causing damage. Later, armed Palestinians in Gaza open fire across the border fence near Bayt Hanun, causing minor damage to Israeli buildings and cars. Separately, IDF troops shoot and injure a Palestinian at a protest camp near Gaza City. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers uproot at least 100 grapevines on Palestinian farmland outside Kafr Malik village near Ramallah. IDF troops arrest 8 Palestinians during late-night raids near Ramallah, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Hebron, and Bethlehem; and patrol near Tulkarm, Hebron, and Qalqilya. The alleged attacker hailed from Nablus and obtained one such permit from a group called Natural Peace Tours, which facilitates relationships between individual Israelis and Palestinians. The International Comm. of the Red Cross (ICRC) announces that it may consider the Palestinian prisoners’ demand for increased family visits, which they made in the context of the Dignity Strike. The ICRC used to coordinate 2 family visits per prisoner per mo. Israel’s Justice Ministry releases a list of 27 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that might be affected by the so-called NGO Transparency Bill, which is currently under discussion in the Knesset. Twenty-five of the 27 NGOs are distinctly left-wing human rights groups, including B’Tselem and Yesh Din. This lends credence to accusations that the Transparency Bill is simply an attempt to silence opponents of the right-wing govt. (HA 6/3)
