Arab World: President Mubarak says he will be carrying the proxy of the PLO during upcoming trip to Washington, and that Arafat has enough support in the PLO to accept Egypt's 10-point plan [WP 9/24]. Lebanon's warring factions put formal cease-fire into effect; thousands of people return to Beirut [WP, NYT 9/24].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli military demolishes at least 3 houses built without licenses in Ramallah area. At least 4 Palestinians are wounded in clashes with IDF forces in Gaza Strip [FJ 10/2].

Occupied Palestine/lsrael: From now on, Gazans working in Israel must present Israeli-issued ID cards in order to pass into Israel [LAT 8/19; CSM 9/6].

Facing question by army about the beating death of an Arab last August, Israeli soldier shoots himself; suicide note expresses fear over becoming scapegoat for other officers [LAT 8/19].

Arab World: At least 2 people are killed, 14 wounded by shell fire in Beirut [FBIS 8/18].
