In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrested 6 Palestinians during raids in and around Tulkarm, Bethlehem, and Qalqilya. Israeli settlers vandalized 7 Palestinian-owned vehicles in ‘Urif. In northern Gaza, Israel assassinated Baha Abu al-Ata, the commander of Islamic Jihad in Palestine. Several rockets were then fired from Gaza toward Israel, causing no damage or injuries. Subsequently, Israel heavily bombed Gaza, killing at least 10 Palestinians and injuring more than 40. CNN and Al Jazeera reported that their reporters were prevented by Israeli forces from covering the events from near the Gaza fence. Schools in Gaza and much of southern Israel were closed. After assassinating al-Ata, Israel tried to assassinate another member of Islamic Jihad in Palestine, Akram al-Ajouri in Damascus, killing his son instead during an airstrike. Syrian media reported that 2 people were killed and 6 were injured during Israel’s attack. (HA, WAFA 11/12)

The EU high court of justice ruled that the EU states have to identify products from Israeli settlements. The U.S. State Department criticized the ruling, calling it anti-Israel biased and serving the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. (AJ, Guardian, HA, WAFA 11/12; State Department 11/13)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set fire to dozens of dunams of farmland south of Nablus and threw stones at Palestinian-owned houses. Israeli settlers and Israeli forces had initially accused Palestinians of starting the fire; however, a video showed that it was the Israeli settlers that ignited the farmland. The video also showed 4 Israeli soldiers watching as the settlers attacked without intervening. 4 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces using rubber-coated bullets at the weekly anti-settlement demonstrations in Kafr Qaddum. Other protesters in Kafr Qaddum and in Ni‘lin suffered from tear gas inhalation. In East Jerusalem, thousands of Palestinians worshipped at the Haram al-Sharif compound for the 2d Friday of Ramadan. Males between 13 and 40 from the West Bank were banned from entering East Jerusalem by the Israeli authorities. A 63-year-old Palestinian man died of a stroke at an Israeli checkpoint on his way for the Friday prayer at Haram al-Sharif. His stroke was assessed to be caused by overcrowding at the checkpoint. Syrian state news reported that the Syrian military had intercepted a number of Israeli missiles fired toward Damascus from the Golan Heights. (HA 5/17)

The German parliament passed a motion condemning the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement as anti-Semitic and called for the German government to cut funding to projects supporting boycotts of Israel. Both Israeli lawmakers and academics called on German politicians not to support the motion prior to the vote. (HA 5/16; HA 5/17)

In the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 21 Palestinians during late-night raids near Ramallah, Nablus, Hebron, Qalqilya, and Tulkarm; and patrol near Ramallah, Hebron, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya. Israeli settlers cut down 2 olive trees in a Palestinian grove near Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 4 Palestinians during a raid in Silwan. Along Gaza’s coast, IDF troops violently disperse a few hundred Palestinians gathering near al-Bureij refugee camp to continue the Great March of Return for a 3d day in a row; 1 Palestinian minor is injured. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Jabaliya refugee camp, causing no damage or injuries (1 fisherman is arrested). A Qatari diplomat says that the $15 million that was supposed to be transferred to Gaza last week is set to go through this week, following a relatively quiet day of protests on 1/18. “Due to the violence on the border, the Israeli government postponed it,” he says. “The agreement is subject to there not being too much violence, so last Friday they approved to do the third tranche.” (HA, JP, REU, TOI, YA 1/20)

YNet reports that PA prime minister Rami Hamdallah formally informed U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo that the Palestinians have decided to reject future U.S. financial assistance, including that which supports the PA security forces, in response to the Anti-Terrorism Clarification Act, which the U.S. passed into law in 10/2018 (see *S. 2946 of 5/24/18 at congressionalmonitor.org for details). That law, which is set to go into effect at the end of the month, forced the Palestinians to either accept future U.S. aid or open themselves up to terrorism lawsuits from individual U.S. citizens, inter alia. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu lands in Chad to renew the diplomatic ties between Israel and Chad that were severed in 1972. At a joint press conference with Netanyahu, Chad’s President Idriss Déby says, ‘The purpose of your visit is to bring our two countries closer and to cooperate.” Netanyahu calls it the renewal of ties a “breakthrough” and a sign of Israel’s “rising standing” in the Muslim world. After unverified reports of Syrian air defenses intercepting an Israeli air strike near Damascus, several ground-to-ground projectiles are fired from Syria into northern Israel. They are all intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system. Late at night, Israeli forces strike approximately 10 government weapons depots, intelligence sites, and other targets in Syria, killing 21 people, including 12 member of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. An IDF spokesperson says that Iranian forces were responsible for the projectile launched into Israel earlier in the day. “This was planned in advance as an attempt to deter us from continuing to act against them,” he says. Approximately 13,000 Palestinians gather along Gaza’s border to continue the Great March of Return. There are some reports of protesters flying incendiary balloons and kites into Israel, but no reports of fires or any damage. IDF troops violently disperse the demonstrations near Rafah, Khan Yunis, Jabaliya refugee camp, Gaza City, and al-Bureij refugee camp; 1 Palestinian is killed and at least 25 are injured (1 Israeli soldier is injured as well). This brings the death toll stemming from the Great March of Return to 196. Hours after the protests, the Israeli Air Force conducts air strikes on 2 Hamas sites east of Gaza City, completely destroying them, according to Palestinians in the area. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Jabaliya refugee camp, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians, Israelis, and international activists at Friday protests against the Israeli occupation in Kafr Qaddum near Qalqilya; 1 Palestinian photojournalist covering the protests is injured. They also shoot and injure a Palestinian as he allegedly attempts to stab an Israeli settler outside the Kiryat Arba settlement near Hebron; arrest 4 Palestinians during raids near Jenin; and patrol near Nablus, Hebron, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya. Late at night, the Israeli Air Force conducts air strikes on more than 8 allegedly Iranian and Hezbollah-affiliated targets in and around Damascus, causing extensive damage.
