In the West Bank, Israeli forces beat 1 Palestinian man to death at the separation wall near Tulkarm after he tried to enter Israel for work. The body of the man, who was from Gaza, was returned to his family on 7/5. Israeli forces also shot and injured 6 Palestinians during a raid in Dura, including 5 with live ammunition and 1 with a baton round. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians in Abu Dis, injuring 1 with live ammunition. Israeli forces also demolished 1 residential structure in Umm Qassa in the Masafer Yatta area, displacing 15. Meanwhile, Israeli forces demolished 1 3-story building in Sawahara al-Sharqiyya and assaulted the Palestinian owner trying to prevent the demolition. Israeli forces also delivered stop-work notices for some 30 structures in Humsa al-Tahta. 19 Palestinians were arrested, including 18 during late-night raids in Beit Sira, Beitunia, Ramallah, Abu Nujaym, Dahariya, Beit Umar, al-Arroub refugee camp, Iskaka, and Nablus; 1 was arrested at a checkpoint near Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities demolished 1 house in Jabel Mukaber and 1 nursery in Isawiya; 2 Palestinians were arrested during the demolition in Jabel Mukaber. 6 others were arrested during raids in the Old City and Isawiya. U.S. state department spokesperson Ned Price said that the U.S. had determined that the ballistic analysis of the bullet that killed Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was inconclusive, saying the bullet was badly damaged. The U.S. said it had “concluded that gunfire from IDF positions was likely responsible for the death” of Abu Akleh but that the U.S. “found no reason to believe that this was intentional but rather the result of tragic circumstances during an IDF-led military operation against factions of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.” Several independent investigations, eyewitnesses, and the PA have concluded that Israeli forces deliberately targeted Abu Akleh given the bullet’s trajectory where she was killed. Member of the PLO executive committee Wasel Abu Yousef accused the U.S. of protecting Israel. Secretary general of the PLO Hussein al-Sheikh said the PA rejected the U.S. findings and would seek justice at the ICC. The family of Abu Akleh expressed disbelief that the U.S. was unable to conclude with certainty Israel had killed Shireen, given the evidence available. 1 Palestinian man from Gaza died after being denied cancer treatment by Israeli authorities, claiming his 2 travel permits for treatment were under security check. The man had applied to travel to Nablus for treatment on 3 occasions since April, but his applications remained pending when he passed. (PCHR 7/6)

PA prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh accused Israel of using the corpses of Palestinians killed by Israel in Israeli medical schools. (WAFA 7/4)

In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler rammed into a flock of Palestinian-owned sheep near Susiya, killing 10. Israeli forces violently dispersed the weekly anti-settlement protest in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 15 using rubber-coated bullets while others suffered tear-gas related injuries; of the 15, 4 were hospitalized. Israeli forces also assaulted 1 Palestinian worker seeking to enter Israel near the separation wall in Far‘un, causing him to sustain 2 fractures in 1 leg. 5 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Bayt Jala, Qatanna, Ramallah, and Beitunia, including Hamas official Hassan Yousef; Fatah’s central committee member Jibril Rajoub condemned Israel’s arrest of Yousef. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a late-night raid in al-Tur. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire on Palestinian fishermen northwest of Khan Yunis within the allowed fishing area; no injuries were reported. PA president Mahmoud Abbas extended the COVID-19-related state of emergency for another 30 days. The 1st COVID-19-related state of emergency was issued on 5 March. According to the PA health ministry, more than 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, have tested positive for the COVID-19 virus and 379 people have died from it. The vice president of Sudan’s transitional government Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo said in an interview with a Sudanese TV station that if Sudan establishes relations with Israel then the U.S. will remove Sudan from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism. Dagalo said that Sudan would “need Israel” as the country could benefit from Israeli technical and agricultural capabilities. He further stated that establishing relations and normalizing are not the same. (AJ 10/3)

U.S. president Donald Trump tweeted that he and the 1st lady Melania Trump have both tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. PA president Mahmoud Abbas wished the U.S. presidential couple a speedy and full recovery. (AJ, HA, REU 10/2; WAFA 10/3)

Uncoordinated stabbing and alleged stabbing attacks continue in the West Bank and Jerusalem, resulting in the deaths of 3 Palestinians. Two Palestinians open fire on an Israeli bus in Ramot, causing no damage. Israeli police then chase the shooters into the Old City, where they shoot and kill the 2 men after they allegedly attempt to ram their car into a Jewish Israeli pedestrian, causing no serious injuries. A 3d Palestinian is critically injured in the crossfire. The IDF maintains, for a 2d day, the closure of 1 village each nr. Qalqilya and Salfit. On the outskirts of the village nr. Salfit, Israeli soldiers open fire on 2 Palestinian youths as they approach an IDF checkpoint, killing 1 and critically injuring the other. Elsewhere in the oPt, Hamas announces that 1 of its fighters died earlier in the day during unspecified training exercises. IDF troops raid a village nr. Jenin, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians; there are no serious injuries. They conduct further raids in and around Nablus, Qalqilya, Bethlehem, and Hebron, arresting 18 Palestinians. An Israeli settler stabs and injures a Palestinian nr. Nablus. Late at night, Israeli settlers spray price-tag graffiti on the walls of a Palestinian home in a village nr. Bethlehem. In response to the string of attacks on 3/8 and after conferring with senior security officials, Israeli PM Netanyahu announces that Israel will complete the construction of the separation wall in the s. Hebron Hills. He also states that his govt. proposes new legislation to deter and punish Palestinians who enter Israel illegally, close Palestinian media outlets responsible for alleged incitement, and deny work permits to the families of Palestinians who commit serious crimes against Israelis. Israeli police immediately arrest 10s of Palestinians in raids across Israel, targeting those who entered the country without proper permits. (HA, JP, TOI 3/9)

The Israeli authorities inform 5 Palestinian food companies that their goods will no longer be permitted to pass through the Beitunia crossing for sale in Jerusalem. Israel last barred West Bank food products from entering East Jerusalem for a brief period in 2010. (TOI 3/13)

In Cairo, French FM Jean-Marc Ayrault says that France will not recognize the State of Palestine if the planned French peace initiative fails, effectively retracting his predecessor’s 1/29 pledge. “There is never anything automatic,” he says, adding that “France will present its initiative to its partners. Off the shore of the Gaza Strip nr. Bayt Lahiya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishermen, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, an unknown gunman opens fire on Israeli forces at Beitunia checkpoint nr. Ofer prison, causing no injuries. The IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 1 village nr. Hebron in the afternoon, and in Hebron and 4 nearby villages, and 2 villages nr. Salfit at night; patrols in 1 village nr. Ramallah in the morning, and in Hebron and 3 nearby villages and 4 villages nr. Ramallah at night. IDF troops violently disperse Palestinian, Israeli, and international protesters at weekly demonstrations against Israel’s separation wall, settlements, and occupation in 3 villages nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Nabi Salih, and Ni‘lin), and 1 village nr. Qalqilya (Kafr Qaddum). There are no serious injuries, except in Bil‘in, where 2 are wounded by tear gas canisters. In response to the kidnapping of 3 Israeli teenagers on 6/12, the IDF erects numerous roadblocks and begins intensive raids in the Hebron region. PA security services spokesperson Adnan Dmeiri says that the PA is not responsible for the safety of settlers and that the area in question is under Israeli security control. Hamas spokesperson Husam Badran, meanwhile, calls on Palestinians to return the West Bank to its “natural place as the focal point of the struggle and resistance.” U.S. Secy. of State Kerry calls Pres. Abbas to discuss several issues, including the missing teenagers, and asks the Palestinian leader to help in the search. Kerry also speaks with PM Netanyahu. (HA, MNA 6/13)

The IDF makes an air strike on a car in central Gaza, assassinating Islamic Jihad’s central Gaza cmdr. Muhammad Abu Murshud, wounding 2 Islamic Jihad mbrs. and 3 bystanders; makes an air strike on a car nr. al-Bureij r.c., assassinating local Islamic Jihad cmdr. Muhammad Ahmad Abu Hassanian, a relative traveling with him, and wounding 6 bystanders (including 2 children). The IDF sends troops and bulldozers into Abasan under cover of artillery fire, clashing with local gunmen, killing 1 Hamas and 2 Islamic Jihad mbrs., wounding 4 bystanders, demolishing 1 Palestinian home, heavily damaging a 2d home, bulldozing several greenhouses, an irrigation network, 20 beehives, and 160 d. of agricultural land. Jasr Zughayb, assassinating him; fatally shoots 2 AMB mbrs. in an exchange of fire in Nablus, also demolishing the home in which they were staying; fatally shoots a 17-yr.-old Palestinian who attempts to cut through the separation fence nr. In Gaza, a combined group of Hamas, ESF mbrs. acting on rumors of Fatah of smuggling weapons halt, demand to inspect a 4-truck convoy escorted by Abbas’s presidential guard that entered Gaza fr. Israel through the Kerem Shalom crossing, sparking an exchange of gunfire that leaves at least 5 Palestinians dead (including 4 presidential guardsmen, 1 female bystander), 34 wounded (including 14 bystanders); the shipment of supplies (widely believed to be arms and ammunition though in separate statements, Fatah says it is food and medical supplies, equipment and tents, generators and spare parts) fr. the UAE reportedly was organized by Gaza strongman Dahlan, with the knowledge of the U.S. and Israel, and was intended for guard units loyal to him; the contents of the trucks cannot be confirmed, as they are seized during the clash (it is unclear by whom). In the most serious incidents: PA Presidential Guard units storm the Islamic University campus, clash with ESF mbrs. guarding the campus (leaving 22 wounded), claim to seize a large weapons cache and to detain 7 Iranian “explosives experts”; Hamas denies the presence of any Iranians in Gaza, Fatah does not give any proof of the arrests, Israel and the U.S. say they cannot corroborate the story; suspected Fatah gunmen fire on Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum nr. Gaza warning them to evacuate areas around rocket launch sites, buildings used by militants; shells Bayt Lahiya, killing 3 Palestinian civilians, wounding 11 others (the IDF says a shell may have misfired); repeatedly shells Bayt Hanun and perimeter, killing 3 Palestinian civilians, wounding 8; shells a shed on a farm nr. Gaza City, allegedly serving as a weapons depot. IDF troops stationed at the Dahaniyya airport fire on residential areas of nearby al-Shuka, wounding 1 Palestinian woman outside her home. Palestinians fire 8 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries. Late in the evening, the IDF conducts air strikes destroying 2 Palestinian homes in Gaza City and Khan Yunis (belonging to an Islamic Jihad mbr.), damaging surrounding stores and residences, wounding 3 bystanders; in both cases, the IDF phoned the homes 20 min. before the attack to warn residents to evacuate. The IDF also makes an air strike destroying a house of a Hamas mbr. under construction in Brazil r.c., also destroying 2 neighboring homes, damaging several others, wounding 15 bystanders (including 7 children).
