PA PM Hamdallah and EU rep. to the PA John Gatt-Rutter, along with a delegation of EU officials, visit Susiya village in the s. Hebron hills to show support for the village’s 340 residents. On 5/4, Israel’s Supreme Court upheld the govt.’s plans to evacuate and demolish the village, denying a petition from activists and residents. Gatt-Rutter calls on Israel to reverse its demolition plans. Meanwhile, the bedouin residents of Umm al-Hiran, a village in the Negev, file another petition to Israel’s Supreme Court, appealing the court’s 5–4 rejection of their previous petition that called for a reprieve from the state’s planned evacuation and demolition of their village. A group of Palestinians in Israeli prisons cancels its plans, announced on 3/9, to begin a series of demonstrations on 3/10 in protest of the poor conditions. According to Al Jazeera, the move comes after the group makes a preliminary deal with the Israel Prison Service (IPS), allowing for more frequent family visits, but an IPS official will refute the report on 3/11. Hamas reactivates Gaza’s separate Palestinian Legislative Council and convenes a session of the body, a move that contravenes the national reconciliation deal that was announced on 4/23. Israeli attacks by land, air, and sea on the Gaza Strip continue, killing 47 Palestinians. A unit of al-Qassam Brigades fighters enters Israeli territory through a cross-border tunnel and kills Israeli soldiers nr. Sufa, e. of Rafah. The Hamas armed wing says that 5 soldiers are killed while the IDF says it is only 2. In fighting in Gaza City, Palestinian fighters wound 3 Israeli soldiers. The armed Palestinian groups fire around 90 rockets into Israel, killing 1 and wounding 3 in a bedouin village in the Negev. The IDF says that its forces have unearthed and destroyed 34 “terror tunnels,” 5 of which crossed the Gaza border fence. The IDF says that Palestinian factions have used up or lost around half of their rocket supplies, with 30–40% destroyed by Israeli attacks, and 10–20% fired into Israel. In the West Bank, IDF troops clash with Palestinian youth in n. Bethlehem, injuring 3 with live ammunition. There are also clashes in Hebron, where IDF troops shoot and injure 1 Palestinian, and in al-‘Arub r.c., where 5 are injured. The IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 1 village nr. Meanwhile, French FM Fabius holds talks with Netanyahu about a cease-fire. The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council announces that Israelis and Palestinians will be offered an unprecedented assistance package in the event of a final status peace deal. The incentives, under the bracket of “Special Privileged Partnership,” include political, economic, and security support. Israeli, Lebanese, and UN military officers meet to defuse tension following fatal crossborder gunfire the previous day. A statement from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) says that the Lebanese soldier who killed an Israeli soldier was acting alone. UN emergency relief coordinator Valerie Amos issues an appeal at a meeting of donor countries in Geneva for $6.5 billion for Syria and its neighbors, including Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkey, each of which host significant populations of Syrian refugees.
