Dozens of IDF troops raid the Ramallah headquarters of the PA’s Wafa News and Information Agency, detaining a number of employees, firing tear gas inside the building, and confiscating tapes from surveillance cameras in the building. The raid sparks minor clashes in central Ramallah; 5 Palestinians are injured. Reuters reports that Saudi king Salman bin Abdulaziz recently informed U.S. officials that he won’t be able to support the Trump administration’s long-awaited peace plan unless it provides for a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem. Jordanian and Egyptian officials have also reportedly encouraged the U.S. team to only circulate a finished plan that is fair to both sides. (HA, TOI, YA 7/29)

Israeli naval forces confront the first ship of a planned flotilla sailing toward Gaza in a symbolic effort to break the Israeli blockade. They commandeer the ship, escort it to the port at Ashdod, and detain all 22 activists on board. Some activists are reportedly assaulted during the confrontation. The U.S. State Department announces that the new U.S. embassy in Israel will open in Jerusalem in 5/2018, implementing President Trump’s 12/6/17 pledge to move the embassy from Tel Aviv. Late at night, the IAF bombs and completely destroys a Palestinian tunnel south of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. There are no reported injuries. The IDF later rejects Palestinian claims that the tunnel was used for smuggling goods from Egypt, and alleges that it extended from Egyptian territory all the way to the area of the Kerem Shalom border crossing. The Czech Foreign Ministry denies rumors that Pres. Trump announces that his administration will not be certifying the 7/14/2015 Iran nuclear deal, triggering a 60-day period for the U.S. Congress to either reinstate sanctions, do nothing, or pass new legislation outside the context of the deal that could change the U.S. position toward Iran.
