The Palestine Chronology

Israeli forces conduct raids in the bedouin village of Umm al-Hiran nr. Beersheba overnight to prepare for demolitions during the day. The raids spark clashes with residents and solidarity activists, including Joint List MKs; 1 bedouin and 1 Israeli police officer are killed. (The Israeli police shoot and kill the bedouin after his vehicle strikes the police officer, killing him. An autopsy of the driver will reveal that he was struck in the leg by a police bullet, causing him to depress the accelerator pedal and strike the officer.) Later, Israeli forces demolish 8 homes and 7 agricultural buildings in the village, leading to renewed clashes throughout the day; a number of Palestinians are injured, including Joint List chair Odeh. Dozens of Israeli settlers visit Joseph’s Tomb nr. Nablus, sparking clashes between their IDF escort and stone-throwing Palestinians; 1 Palestinian is injured. Israeli settlers also damage 12 olive trees outside Turmus ‘Ayya village nr. Ramallah, leaving racist graffiti at the site. IDF troops arrest 8 Palestinians during late-night raids nr. Tulkarm, Hebron, Nablus, and Qalqilya. Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops open fire on Palestinian farmers working nr. Gaza City and agricultural lands nr. Khan Yunis. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. Gaza City. There are no injuries reported in any of the day’s incidents. There is a flurry of IDF activity in the Hebron region today, mostly related to the ongoing Israeli investigation into the killing of an Israeli settler on 7/1. IDF troops arrest 17 Palestinians during raids nr. the city, including 11 allegedly involved in the 7/1 killing. During one of the raids, Israeli soldiers open fire on a wanted Palestinian’s home to draw him out. (HA, MNA, WAFA 7/31; PCHR 8/4)

Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian man at a checkpoint nr. Nablus after he allegedly attempts to charge at and stab them. No Israelis are injured. Separately, they shoot and injure a Palestinian attempting to enter Jerusalem for work. IDF troops conduct raids and house searches in and around Qalqilya, Bethlehem, Jenin, and Nablus, arresting 9 Palestinians and issuing arrest summons to 1; and patrol nr. Hebron and Qalqilya throughout the day. In East Jerusalem, a Palestinian demolishes his own home in al-Thawri to avoid paying NIS 50,000 (approx. $13,000) for an Israeli demolition crew. Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops open fire on Palestinian farmlands nr. Khan Yunis, causing no damage. In Israel, Israeli forces violently disperse Palestinians protesting the Israeli plan to demolish their village, Umm al-Hiran, in s. In Gaza, a Hamas mbr. is killed in a tunnel collapse nr. Khan Yunis. Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post reports that some Hamas mbrs. fear that Israel is responsible for the recent tunnel collapses. Meanwhile, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian soccer player as he attempts to cross through the Erez border crossing. In the West Bank, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian youth nr. Jericho after he allegedly stabs and lightly injures an Israeli officer; demolish a fuel station in a village nr. Jerusalem. They also patrol nr. Ramallah, Tulkarm, and Hebron. Israeli settlers smash the windshield of a Palestinian car nr. Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces seal off Issawiyya for 3 hours after some police officers on patrol in the neighborhood come under gunfire. They also conduct raids in the neighborhood, sparking clashes with stone-throwing Palestinians; there are no injuries and 2 Palestinians are arrested. In Israel, around 300 residents of 2 bedouin villages slated for destruction—Atir and Umm al-Hiran—demonstrate in Beersheba, calling for the govt. to avert its plan to displace them and build a new Jewish Israeli town on their land. Fanning the flames across East Jerusalem, at least 20 Israeli settlers escorted by Israeli forces overtake a building in Silwan, claiming that the settler organization Ateret Cohanim had purchased it. A Palestinian man refuses to leave his apartment, so the settlers only move into 4 of the 5 floors. Later, Israeli forces close off a main street in al-Tur nr. the site of a firebomb attack on 8/26. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian attempting to cross into Israel e. of Khan Yunis. Egyptian authorities allow the body of a Palestinian who recently died in an Egyptian hospital to be returned home through the Rafah border crossing. In the West Bank, IDF troops patrol in a village nr. Ramallah, sparking minor clashes with stone-throwing Palestinian youths and arresting 1 Palestinian. They also conduct house searches and raids nr. Qalqilya, issuing 1 Palestinian an arrest summons. Israeli forces demolish 4 buildings in Israeli settlement outposts nr. Nablus and arrest 3 settlers protesting the demolitions. In Israel, dozens of Palestinians gather nr. the bedouin village Umm al-Hiran in the Negev to protest the preconstruction phases of 2 Israeli Jewish towns, which Israeli forces began on 8/23. Palestinian UN envoys formally submit a UN General Assembly (UNGA) res. that would allow non-mbr. observer states—Palestine and the Vatican—to display their flags at the UN’s headquarters and offices.
