For a 9th day in a row, Palestinians across the oPt gather to protest U.S. pres. Trump’s 12/6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Attendance spikes today, as the protests coincide with weekly Friday protests against Israel’s occupation, separation wall, and settlements. Israeli forces violently disperse demonstrations across East Jerusalem, Halhul village near Hebron, 2 areas near Ramallah (outside the Beit El settlement and in Nabi Salih), Kafr Qaddum near Qalqilya, Bethlehem, Tubas, Tulkarm, Huwwara checkpoint near Nablus, and along Gaza’s border near Bayt Hanun, Khan Yunis, Jabaliya refugee camp, al-Bureij refugee camp, and Gaza City; 4 Palestinians are killed and approximately 150 are injured. (A video showing a 16-year-old Palestinian girl, Ahed Tamimi, shoving and slapping an Israeli soldier amid clashes in Nabi Salih near Ramallah, will go viral over the weekend. She will be arrested on 12/19). Israeli forces arrest 8 Palestinians and issue arrest summons to 2 during raids near Bethlehem and in East Jerusalem, and patrol near Tulkarm and Hebron. Separately, Palestinians throw stones at Israeli vehicles near Jerusalem, injuring 1 settler. The Israeli authorities announce that the Erez border crossing has reopened for Palestinians to enter and exit, but that the Kerem Shalom crossing is to remain closed indefinitely. Both were closed on 12/13. (TOI 12/15)

For a 7th day in a row, Palestinians across the oPt gather to protest U.S. pres. Trump’s 12/6 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital (attendance continues to steadily decline). Israeli forces violently disperse protestors in Hebron and 3 nearby villages (Dura, Bayt Umar, and Halhul), outside the Beit El settlement near Ramallah, Bethlehem, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and along Gaza’s border near al-Bureij refugee camp, Bayt Hanun, Khan Yunis, and Rafah; at least 26 Palestinians are injured, including 1 journalist, and 5 are arrested. Meanwhile, IDF troops violently detain 2 Palestinian youths inside an ambulance in Halhul; arrest 3 Palestinians during late-night raids in Hebron and near Ramallah; and patrol in and around Hebron, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya. Israeli settlers throw stones at Palestinian students outside a school in Burin village near Nablus, sparking minor clashes; there are no serious injuries. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 2 Palestinians during late-night raids in Issawiyya and Abu Dis. Unidentified parties fire 3 rockets from Gaza toward Israel in the evening; 2 are intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system and 1 falls in an open area, causing no damage or injuries. The IAF conducts air strikes on at least 5 Hamas sites across Gaza, causing damage but no injuries. The Israeli authorities announce that both the Erez and Kerem Shalom border crossings will be closed indefinitely as collective punishment for the week of rocket attacks emanating from Gaza. At an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, reps. of the 57 OIC members jointly declare East Jerusalem to be the capital of the State of Palestine and urge all countries to recognize Palestine. Addressing the attendees, PA pres. Abbas says that Israel’s violations and of international law free the Palestinians from prior commitments made in context of the peace process, threatens to abandon the PA’s security coordination with the IDF, and announces the Palestinians’ intention to go to the UNSC for full UN membership. A Hamas fighter dies in a tunnel collapse in the morning. Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops open fire on Palestinian farmers and bird hunters nr. Gaza City. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. Bayt Lahiya. There are no injuries or damage in either incident. In the West Bank, Israeli forces level land nr. Nablus reportedly to prepare for the construction of new settler residences in the area. IDF troops open fire on 3 Palestinians outside Beit El settlement nr. Ramallah, injuring 1 moderately. They also arrest 2 Palestinians and issue 2 arrest summons during raids nr. Jericho and Qalqilya, as well as in and around Bethlehem; and patrol nr. Hebron and Nablus during the day. The Egyptian authorities open the Rafah border crossing for the 4th day in a row, allowing passage in both directions. They had planned to keep the crossing open only 4 days in a row, but decide to extend it an additional day through 10/23 (see Update). (MNA 10/23)

An Israeli police spokesperson announces that the IDF will impose a general closure on the West Bank and Gaza from midnight tonight through approx. midnight on 10/24, the 1st day of Jewish holiday Simhath Torah. Humanitarian cases will be permitted. (HA, MNA, TOI 10/23)

In Gaza, unknown assailants set fire to a Fatah leader’s house in e. Gaza City. Off the coast nr. al-Sudaniyya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats, causing 2 injuries and arresting 4 fishermen. IDF troops e. of Gaza City fire on Palestinian homes and agricultural lands in the area, causing damage but no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Bethlehem and Nablus, arresting 3 Palestinians; patrols in 2 villages nr. Hebron; arrests 1 Palestinian nr. Jenin. The PCC meets in Ramallah for a 2d day in a row and adopts several major resolutions, including calls to end security coordination with Israel, boycott all Israeli products, and to reject recognition of Israel as a Jewish state. The PLO Exec. Comm. will execute the decisions made by the council at an appropriate time, according to a statement released at the conference’s end. (MNA, NYT, TOI, YA 3/5; HA, JP 3/6).

Israeli officials announce that Israel will partially resume importing fruits and vegetables from Gaza next week (on 3/12), a practice halted in 2007 after Hamas began governing Gaza. (HA, REU, TOI 3/5)

Israel’s High Court of Justice issues an injunction temporarily delaying the demolition of 24 under-construction apartments in the West Bank settlement Beit El. The apartments were set to be destroyed by 3/8, and the court does not give a new deadline. Meanwhile, the IDF temporarily suspends its use of canine units in the West Bank, days after a video depicting an Israeli dog attacking a Palestinian youth on 12/23 proliferated in the media. In Riyadh, U.S. Secy. of State Kerry briefs Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, other officials, and 6 FMs from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on the ongoing negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. Kerry says that the U.S. is not seeking a “grand bargain” with Iran. (AFP, AP, JP, MNA, NBC, YA 3/5)

After receiving a letter of protest from a group of Democratic and Independent senators on 3/4, Majority Leader McConnell decides to temporarily postpone legislative action on the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, in an effort to consolidate bipartisan support. (TOI 3/6)
