The Palestine Chronology

Following Friday prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque, some 100 Palestinian worshipers protesting Israel’s call to expel Arafat throw stones at Jews worshiping at the Western Wall, prompting Israeli police to raid the mosque compound, fire tear gas and stun grenades todisperse the crowd; no one is injured. Around the occupied territories, 10,000s of Palestinians rally in support of Arafat. Palestinians fire 4 mortars at a Jewish settlement in Gaza, causing nodamage or injuries. The IDF conducts arrest raids, demolishes 1 Palestinian home in Hebron. An Israeli woman dies of injuries received in the 8/19 suicide bombing, raising that toll to 23. The IDF makes a failed assassination attempt on Hamas mbr. Khalid Massud, firing missiles at his car as he drives btwn. Gaza City and Jabaliya r.c.; 1 Palestinian bystander is killed, Massud and 25 bystanders are wounded. The IDF alsosends troops back into Nablus to raid a hospital, arrest and take away 2 AMB mbrs. wounded on 8/22, including 1 who was in intensive care; fires on, shells Palestinians in Hebron (wounding 5), Khan Yunis (wounding 2). Some 50 Palestinians, including Waqf official Mustafa Abu Zahara, stage a sit-down prayer vigil blocking Israeli police fr. leading a group of Jewish tourists fr. entering the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif; Abu Zahara, several others are arrested. The IDF assassinates senior Hamas political leader and spokesman Ismail Abu Shanab, firing 5 missiles at his car as he drives through Gaza City, also killing 2 bodyguards, wounding at least 19 bystanders. Hamas, Islamic Jihad declare the cease-fire officially over. The IDF also imposes curfews on all Palestinian cities; continues operations in Nablus, where tanks and troops have entered the heart of the city, demolishing 1 Palestinian apartment, raiding and evacuating the staff of a medical clinic for 6 hrs.; sends 5 bulldozers, 100 special forces units into Nazlat Issa, nr. the Green Line, to demolish at least 7 Palestinian homes, 115 shops, 2 factories, several warehouses; demolishes 3 Palestinian homes in Jenin, 2 in Hebron (including the home of the 8/19 bomber); shells residential areas of Khan Yunis; conducts arrest raids in Qabatiyya. Palestinians fire 12 mortars at Gush Katif, 5 Qassam rockets at s. Israel, damaging 2 buildings but causing no injuries. The IDF arrests a Hebron settler for alleged membership in a Jewish militant group. The IDF seals the West Bank and Gaza; surrounds, tightens closures on all Palestinian cities; sends additional tanks to the outskirts of Ramallah; conducts arrest raids in Hebron, detaining 17 Palestinians, including relatives of the 8/19 bomber; fires on residential areas of Rafah. Late in the evening, the IDF imposes curfews on, sends tanks and troops into Hebron (raiding, searching 3 mosques), Jenin, Nablus (where residents report hearing helicopters, machine gun fire through most of the night), Tulkarm (where the IDF fatally shoots 1 Palestinian, wounds 7). Israel also opens the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif to non-Muslims without agreement of the Waqf; some 150 Jews under police protection visit the site. U.S. Pres. George W. Bush phones Sharon to tell him that Israel has a right to defend itself following the “vicious” 8/19 bombing, reportedly does not urge restraint. Hamas mbrs. fire 2 Qassam rockets toward Sederot (1 lands near the town, the other inside Gaza), causing no damage or injuries. The IDF then sends tanks into Bayt Hanun, sparking stone-throwing protests by Palestinians; the IDF fires on demonstrators, killing 5 Palestinians, wounding at least 10. The IDF also raids Nur al-Shams r.c.; detains all men, arresting 16, busing others outside the camp; conducts house-to-house searches, breaking through walls; demolishes 1 Palestinian home. The IDF also demolishes 1 Palestinian home in Silwan, 1 in Ramallah; detains, beats 2 Palestinian cameramen working for AFP and Reuters for filming troops in Hebron forcing Palestinians to close their stores; conducts arrest raids in Abud. In Jaba‘, a bomb explodes in a Palestinian high school, wounding 19 students; although the Jewish militant group Revenge of the Innocent Babes, which has staged at least 1 (3/5/02, possibly 9/17/02) similar bombing, claims responsibility for the attack, the IDF says it is “confident” that a Palestinian brought the bomb to school. Coalition forces secure control of most of Baghdad. By evening, the U.S. declares that Hussein’s government has “collapsed,” but warns that the military struggle may continue for some time, as troops continue to meet significant resistance in some areas. Looting is pervasive in Basra and Baghdad, mostly targeting government buildings, state-owned companies, hotels. The IDF fatally shoots 2 AMB mbrs. planting roadside bombs outside Kefar Darom settlement; shells residential areas of Hebron, killing 1 Palestinian, destroying his home; demolishes 1 Palestinian home in Bayt Hanun, 1 in Jenin, 1 in al-Qarara; bulldozes 10 dunams of Palestinian land nr. Kiryat Arba settlement in Hebron; conducts arrest raids, house searches in Bayt Hanun. A Palestinian gunman ambushes an IDF patrol nr. the Tomb of the Patriarchs/ al-Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, killing 1 IDF soldier, wounding 5, taking refuge in an apartment building; Hamas, the PFLP each take responsibility; the IDF evacuates the building, shells and bulldozes it, killing the gunman. A Beit El military court sentences a Fatah mbr. to 4 consecutive life terms for planning a 3/21/02 suicide bombing in Jerusalem. The AMB and military wings of Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the PFLP in Nablus issue a letter warning the IDF to withdraw fr. The Reston Connection (Reston, VA) reports that at a private function last wk. in Virginia, Rep. James Moran (D-VA) said, “If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this [i.e., planning for war]. The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should.” Jewish orgs. condemn his comments as “reprehensible and anti-Semitic.” House minority leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) says Moran’s comments “have no place in the Democratic party.” (HA, WP 3/11; WJW 3/13; WP 3/15; MEI 3/21; WJW 4/10)

Off the Gaza coast, a Hamas mbr. in a booby-trapped raft attempts to ram an Israeli naval patrol boat, but soldiers fire on the raft, causing it to explode, killing the Hamas mbr., causing no damage. Nr. Hebron 2 Hamas gunmen attack a lone trailer marking an illegal hilltop outpost, occupied by a single Jewish settler family; 1 Palestinian, 1 Jewish settler (a prominent mbr. of the outlawed Kach movement) die in an exchange of gunfire, 3 settlers are wounded, the other Palestinian escapes. Soon after Jewish settlers attack, vandalize Palestinian homes in Hebron. The IDF erects a sand barrier around the al-Sayafa area in the n. of the Gaza Strip, closing it off fr. its surroundings; bulldozes 1,500 m² of land, a main road in al-Qarara; conducts arrest raids in Tulkarm; erects a new checkpoint e. of Dayr al Balah. Some 3,500 Palestinians attend a Hamas-led rally in Gaza City protesting U.S. plans to attack Iraq. The IDF says that it is concerned over the increase in weapons thefts fr. IDF bases during 2002; claims Jewish underworld figures, Israeli Arabs, Palestinians involved.
