Tension in East Jerusalem continues to escalate surrounding Jewish holidays and access at Haram al-Sharif. After Palestinian youths spend the night in al-Aqsa Mosque, the Israeli police and Islamic Waqf officials spend the morning attempting to negotiate their exit, but the talks fail to produce an agreement. Then, 150 Israeli police officers raid Haram al-Sharif, evacuating Palestinians from al-Aqsa Mosque and sparking clashes with stone- and firebomb-throwing Palestinian youths for the 2d day in a row; 1 Israeli policeman and 22 Palestinians are injured, including 3 seriously. The Israeli authorities close all but 3 entrances to the sanctuary and later bar all Palestinian worshippers. Israeli forces also arrest 9 Palestinians on late-night raids in the Old City, Jabal Mukabir, Ras al-Amud, and Abu Dis. In a related development, the Israeli authorities announce they will close Hebron’s al-Ibrahimi Mosque, known to Jews as the Cave of the Patriarchs, to Muslim worshippers on 9/29 and 9/30 to accommodate Jewish access during the Jewish holiday Sukkoth. In Gaza, a Hamas fighter dies in a smuggling tunnel accident. A Palestinian in Gaza City is injured when he accidentally detonates an unexploded Israeli munition. In the West Bank, IDF troops conduct late-night raids and house searches in 1 village each nr. In Gaza, unknown assailants open fire on trucks at the Kerem Shalom border crossing, causing light damage to 1. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and raids in Qalqilya, 1 village nr. Ramallah, Tulkarm r.c. and 1 village nr. Tulkarm, as well as al-‘Arub r.c. and 1 village nr. Hebron, arresting 18 Palestinians; patrols in 2 villages nr. Jenin, 1 each nr. Qalqilya and Hebron, and ‘Aqabat Jabir r.c. nr. Jericho. Meanwhile, a group of armed men from the Balata r.c. shut down a main road in Nablus in protest of the PASF crackdown on the camp. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces confiscate the contents of a store in Hizma and demolish a residential building under construction in Wadi al-Juz. They also conduct raids in Silwan, assaulting 2 Palestinians and arresting 3. Meanwhile, the Jordan-funded Islamic Waqf begins renovations at Haram al-Sharif, and Israeli minister Uri Ariel calls for the project to be halted. U.S. Pres. Obama meets with several U.S. Jewish groups to discuss the “key parameters” announced on 4/2 by the P5+1 and Iran, and their concerns about Israel’s security. Israeli naval vessels intercept a Palestinian fishing boat that approaches the boundary of the permitted fishing zone off the Bayt Lahiya coast, damaging the boat, forcing the fishermen to jump into the sea, and then detaining them, taking them to Ashdod port in Israel for several hrs. of questioning, before releasing them to Gaza. A smuggling tunnel under the Rafah border collapses, killing 3 Palestinians. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches nr. Hebron, Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Palestinians in Silwan report that during the previous wk., Israeli workers and archeologists resumed work on 2 archeological tunnels under the city leading to the al-Aqsa Mosque (see Quarterly Update in JPS 154). A group of right-wing Jews breaks into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound to hold prayers marking Hanukkah, but Waqf officials ask Israeli police to intervene, and police remove them peacefully. Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem celebrating Hanukkah attack a number of Palestinian shops and residents in the Old City; Israeli security forces observe but do not intervene. The PASF crackdown on Hamas mbrs. in the West Bank winds down today, with the UN reporting at least 80 and as many as 300 detained. The IDF seals the West Bank and Gaza; surrounds, tightens closures on all Palestinian cities; sends additional tanks to the outskirts of Ramallah; conducts arrest raids in Hebron, detaining 17 Palestinians, including relatives of the 8/19 bomber; fires on residential areas of Rafah. Late in the evening, the IDF imposes curfews on, sends tanks and troops into Hebron (raiding, searching 3 mosques), Jenin, Nablus (where residents report hearing helicopters, machine gun fire through most of the night), Tulkarm (where the IDF fatally shoots 1 Palestinian, wounds 7). Israel also opens the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif to non-Muslims without agreement of the Waqf; some 150 Jews under police protection visit the site.
