In the West Bank, Israeli forces set up roadblocks between Nablus and Jenin after alleging that a man fired at Israeli soldiers north of Nablus. Near Ramallah, Israeli forces raided Dayr Nidham leading to confrontations with residents; during the confrontation Israeli forces detained 21 people who were all released after being interrogated. Israeli forces arrested 3 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Qalqilya, Hebron, and Jenin. Israeli settlers with military escort toured a religious site southeast of Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces detained 35 children and 5 instructors riding a school bus. The children were allowed to leave after the bus was taken to an Israeli facility, however the 5 instructors were arrested. Israeli forces also later arrested 1 Palestinian in Issawiyya; the Palestinian teen suffered several fractures during the arrest. In Gaza, 2 Palestinian shepherds were arrested by Israeli forces east of Rafah. (WAFA, WAFA 8/1; PCHR 8/8)

The U.S. senate confirmed Kelly Craft as the next U.S. ambassador to the UN. During the confirmation hearing, Craft promised to continue former Ambassador Nikki Haley’s efforts to fight anti-Israel resolutions and actions. (HA 8/1)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolished the home in al-Zawiya of a Palestinian accused of killing an Israeli settler and Israeli soldier in March. The Palestinian man was killed by Israeli forces 2 days after the episode. The demolition leaves 6 of the Palestinian’s family members homeless. A confrontation between Palestinian residents and Israeli forces broke out during the demolition and Israeli forces fired tear gas and sound bombs at the Palestinians; no injuries were reported. Israeli settlers with military escort raided the Palestinian town al-Samou near Hebron. Meanwhile, Israeli forces set up checkpoints in al-Thahriya, Yatta, Taffuh, and Hebron. Elsewhere, clashes between Israeli forces and residents ensued in al-‘Arub refugee camp north of Hebron. Israeli forces fired live ammunition and stun grenades; no injuries were reported. In Nablus, 27 Palestinians were injured by Israeli forces escorting some 1,500 Israeli settlers to Joseph’s Tomb; 3 of the injured Palestinians were taken to a hospital. 3 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around Hebron, Bayt Iksa, and Ramallah. In East Jerusalem, some 500 Israeli settlers and military escort stormed Haram al-Sharif to perform prayers. Israeli authorities also banned 2 Palestinians from Haram al-Sharif for 4 and 6 months. In a meeting with U.S. senators Mitt Romney (R-UT) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) in Ramallah, Palestinian prime minister Mohammed Shtayyeh stressed the importance of U.S. support of a 2-state solution and asked for the U.S. to recognize the State of Palestine and lift the ban on the PLO. (MNA 4/25)

In the West Bank, the entrance to ‘Azun east of Qalqilya was blocked by Israeli forced for the 15th day in a row. Israeli forces also sealed the entrance to al-‘Arub refugee camp north of Hebron and al-Fawar refugee camp south of Hebron. Separately, Israeli forces conducted raids in Sair, Bayt Umar, and Sabastiyya. During the raid in Sabastiyya, several Palestinians suffered from tear gas inhalation after clashes with Israeli forces. During late-night raids in and around Sair and Jenin, Israel forces arrest 7 Palestinians and injure 2 others. In East Jerusalem, the Israeli minister of agriculture Uri Ariel toured Haram al-Sharif along with a group of Israeli settlers and security forces. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces fired toward Palestinian fishermen 3 nautical miles from the shore of al-Sudaniyya; no injuries were reported. 2 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli forces near the Gaza fence. It was announced that the Saudi Arabian government, through the Saudi Fund for Development, donated $23 million to UNRWA projects across Syria, Jordan, Gaza, Lebanon, and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, to maintain school and health centers. (WAFA, UNRWA 4/11)

U.S. senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced to the Senate a resolution (S. Res. 171) seeking to restore bilateral assistance to the West Bank and Gaza after the Trump administration slashed all aid to Palestine in 2018. The bill was co-sponsored by Chris Coons (D-DE), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). (Congress 4/11; HA, WAFA 4/18)
