Armed Palestinians in the Gaza Strip detonate an improvised explosive device nr. the border fence with Israel, damaging an IDF jeep but causing no injuries. IDF troops on the Gaza border open fire on volunteers working on farmland nr. al-Bureij r.c., causing no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in 2 villages nr. Ramallah in the morning. A bomb blast in Beirut kills Wissam al-Hassan, head of Lebanese domestic intelligence, as well as another 9 people and injuring more than 100. In the aftermath, opposition politicians, including Saad Hariri, blame the Syrian government, and there are demonstrations across the country by Sunni Muslims. Lebanese PM Najib Mikati says he suspects the killing was linked to al-Hassan’s role in uncovering Syrian involvement in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafiq Hariri. The IDF launches Operation Hot Winter (also called Operation Warm Winter) targeting Gaza’s “terrorist infrastructure,” making more than 20 air strikes, mostly on n. and c. Gaza, killing 20 Palestinians (including at least 2 unarmed adults and 5 children, including 4 boys ages 8–14 playing soccer in Jabaliya town), wounding more than 50 (including at least 14 children, 5 women). One of the air strikes targets a Hamas-affiliated police post nr. the home of Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh in Shati’ r.c., killing 2 police officers. Another levels the labor syndicate headquarters in Gaza City. The IDF and Gaza militants also continue to trade heavy fire across the border, with Palestinians firing at least 31 rockets and 15 mortars, injuring 2 Israelis. Israel alleges that the rockets include 8 Grads fired by Hamas, 2 of which hit a house and cemetery in Ashqelon; none causes injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF fires on Palestinians in Salfit holding a nonviolent protest against the IDF attacks on Gaza, wounding 2; conducts arrest raids, house searches nr. Bethlehem, Hebron. The IDF begins removing equipment fr. its base in Gaza’s Neve Dekalim settlement in preparation for disengagement; conducts arrest raids in Bethlehem; bars an ambulance transporting a pregnant Palestinian woman in distress fr. crossing a checkpoint nr. Khan Yunis, forcing the woman to give birth and allowing the baby to die at the checkpoint; conducts house searches in al-Aza r.c., Bayt Jala, Bayt Tamar nr. Bethlehem. In response to the mortar attack on Gilo on 10/18, the IDF sends tanks, bulldozers into Bethlehem, Bayt Jala; occupies 10 Palestinian buildings in Bethlehem (including 2 hotels to house troops), several in Bayt Jala. The incursions spark clashes, which leave 3 Palestinians dead and at least 16 Palestinians, 1 IDF soldier injured. In Ramallah, 2 Palestinians are killed by IDF shelling; a 6th Palestinian is killed in Gaza. IDF tanks completely surround Bayt Sahur, Nablus, Qalqilya. The IDF also directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at Bayt Hanina, Hebron, Jinin, Khan Yunis, Tulkarm; occupies a Palestinian home nr. Qarni crossing.
