An armed Palestinian opens fire on Israeli settlers at the Barkan Industrial Park near the Ariel settlement, killing 2 and seriously injuring a 3d. The assailant evades arrest and flees the scene. IDF troops then set up dozens of mobile checkpoints and conduct raids and searches in the area. Elsewhere in the West Bank, IDF troops arrest 18 Palestinians during raids near Hebron, Tulkarm, Ramallah, Bethlehem, and Nablus; and patrol near Hebron, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, and Salfit. Israeli settlers break the windows of 10 Palestinian vehicles at a showroom near Salfit. In East Jerusalem, more than 100 right-wing Jewish activists tour Haram al-Sharif. Along Gaza’s border, an Israeli aircraft conducts an air strike on a group of Palestinians near Rafah who were allegedly preparing to fly incendiary kites and balloons into southern Israel; there are no reported injuries. Meanwhile, Israeli firefighters put out 5 fires in border communities allegedly sparked by such kite and balloon attacks emanating from Gaza. IDF troops shoot and injure 2 Palestinians during clashes sparked by raids in Dahaysha refugee camp near Hebron and in Yatta village near Hebron. Elsewhere in the West Bank, they arrest 3 Palestinians during raids in and around Hebron, and patrol near Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces arrest 1 Palestinian during a late-night raid in Bir Nabala. A senior IDF officer says that the exchange of cross-border violence in Gaza on 5/29 was the closest “we’ve come to a war in Gaza” since Operation Protective Edge, the Israeli assault in the summer of 2014. He says that the IDF is urging the government to loosen certain restrictions on Gaza in order to de-escalate tensions. “The [Israeli] political leadership has to decide with whom to make such arrangements, but in terms of Hamas’ situation in the Gaza Strip, now is definitely a good time to try to reach agreements that will enable [Palestinians in Gaza] to have a better life and bring a long period of quiet.” (HA 5/31; TOI 6/1)

A day after Israel’s Civil Administration advanced plans for almost 2,000 new settler homes, Israel’s Housing Ministry publishes tenders for an additional 1,162 homes in the West Bank settlements, including 409 in Ariel. (TOI, WAFA 5/31)

IDF troops violently disperse Palestinians protesting along Gaza’s border for a 5th day in a row; 1 protester is killed, bringing the death toll stemming from the Great March of Return to 17. In the West Bank, IDF troops shoot and kill a Palestinian citizen of Israel after he allegedly rams his car into a bus stop near the Ariel settlement. IDF troops shoot and injure 2 Palestinian amid clashes sparked by a patrol near Nablus; arrest 8 Palestinians; issue 1 arrest summons during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Nablus, Jericho, and Tubas; and patrol near Hebron and Nablus. Organizers of the ongoing Great March of Return, which commenced with a 30,000- strong protest in Gaza on 3/30, say that preparations are underway for renewed protests this week. “We welcome all participants of all factions, and appreciate their work for the success of this action that embarrassed Israel throughout the world,” they write, also calling on participants not to approach the border fence, for fear of giving Israeli troops an excuse to open fire. Israeli PM Netanyahu and U.S. president Trump speak briefly by phone in the evening. According to a White House statement, they discussed “recent developments in the Middle East,” and Trump “reiterated the commitment of the U.S. to Israel’s security.” Two White House officials describe the call as “tense” because of Netanyahu’s concerns about the reported U.S. plans to withdraw from Syria.
