In the West Bank, a Palestinian man shot by Israeli forces on 1/8 in Beitunia succumbs to his wounds. Israeli settlers set olive trees and an agriculture structure on fire near Kafr ad-Dik. Israeli forces raid Nablus and Abud, injuring 8 people with live ammunition, including a child, and cause widespread destruction in Nablus. Israeli forces also demolish a car wash and a nursery in Kafl Haris. Elsewhere, Israeli forces raze 6 dunams (1.5 acres) of Palestinian-owned land planted with 50 olive trees in Hebron and 2 dunams (.5 acres) of Palestinian-owned land near Bethlehem. Israeli forces also raid a medical clinic near Bethlehem, causing damage. Israeli forces arrest 26 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Ramallah, Tulkarm, Tubas, Hebron, Jenin, and Nablus. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities demolish a Palestinian home in Sur Baher, displacing 8 people. In Gaza, Israel bombs Dayr al-Balah, Rafah, Gaza City, Khan Yunis, Maghazi, al-Bureij refugee camp, and Jabalia refugee camp, killing at least 147 people, including 4 crew members and 2 injured Palestinians being transported an ambulance, killing 40 people in a home at the entrance of al-Aqsa Hospital in Dayr al-Balah, and 15 people in an apartment building in Rafah. In the Naqab, Israeli forces demolish the al-Za’arura and Bir Hadaj Bedouin villages. In Lebanon, Israeli forces attack the home of a Hezbollah member in Kfarchouba, killing him. More than 23,357 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza, including at least 16,350 women and children, and around 59,410 have been injured since 10/7. At least 7,000 people are missing in rubble, including 1,700 children. 335 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since 10/7, including 84 children. More than 4,148 people have been injured. Israel reports that 1,139 Israelis and foreign nationals have been killed and 5,400 have been injured in Israel since 10/7, including Israeli soldiers. In addition, 184 Israeli soldiers have been killed and 1,076 injured in Gaza since the ground invasion began on 10/27. Over 1.93 million Palestinians, nearly 85% of the population of Gaza, have been displaced since 10/7. There has been a complete electricity blackout in Gaza since 10/12 due to the Israeli blockade. At least 69,000 housing units have been destroyed and 290,000 have been damaged in Israeli airstrikes since 10/7, constituting over 60% of all housing units. 193 trucks carrying aid enter Gaza via the Rafah and Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) crossings. Haaretz reports that Israel demolished 140 Palestinian homes and 84 other structures in East Jerusalem in 2023, marking a 60% increase in home demolitions compared to 2022. The newspaper notes that during the first 9 months of 2023 10 housing units were demolished per month and after 10/7 the figure rose to 17 a month. (HA 1/10)

Hamas official Osama Hamdan says there are no talks about a prisoner exchange, adding Israel is defrauding the Israeli public by circulating reports about talks. Hamdan maintains the Hamas position that it will not engage until Israel stops its attacks on Gaza. Hamdan also calls on the ICJ not to be pressured by the U.S. (AJ, HA, NYT 1/10)

PA president Mahmoud Abbas meets with U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken in Ramallah, discussing the situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Reports describe the meeting as intense, with Abbas pressing Blinken on Israel’s freezing of the PA’s tax revenue and Israel’s attacks on Gaza. Palestinians protest Blinken’s visit, saying he is not welcome. Blinken later tells the press in Bahrain that Abbas agreed to reform the PA in preparation to take control of Gaza. Abbas flies to Aqaba in Jordan after the meeting with Blinken where he meets Jordanian king Abdullah II and Egyptian president Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, discussing ways to end Israel’s war in Gaza and prevent the displacement of Palestinians. PA prime minister Mohammad Shtayyeh meets with U.S. deputy assistant secretary for Palestinian affairs Hady Amr in Ramallah. In an English language post on X Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu says, “Israel has no intention of permanently occupying Gaza or displacing its civilian population,” contradicting statements by several of his coalition members. Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz says Hamas no longer has ruling capabilities in Gaza and that Israel will continue its war to prevent Hamas from regaining control. Gantz also says that security in Gaza will remain “in our hands.” Likud member and deputy speaker of the Knesset Nissim Vatur tells the Kol Barama radio station that “Gaza and its people must be burned.” (AJ, AP, HA, HA 1/10)

The UN Security Council passes a resolution demanding that Yemen’s Houthi government ends its attacks on ships in the Red Sea and frees the ship Galaxy Leader and its crew. U.S. Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis suggests at a presidential primary debate that Egypt or Saudi Arabia should resettle some Palestinians from Gaza if Israel “makes the calculation that [it is needed] to avert a second Holocaust.” Another candidate, Nikki Haley, says the U.S. should give Israel “whatever it wants.” (AJ, HA 1/11)

A poll conducted for the Washington Institute for Near East Policy finds that 96% of Saudis believe all Arab states should sever all ties with Israel. A YouGov poll commissioned by Medical Aid for Palestinians and the Council for Arab-British Understanding shows that 71% of people in the UK support an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, while 17% approve of the UK government’s handling of the war on Gaza. The Jewish Forward reports that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has started including pro-Palestine rallies in its tally of anti-Semitic incidents. The report also says that the ADL now deems all anti-Zionist chants and slogans anti-Semitic, leading to pro-Palestine rallies where anti-Zionist slogan were chanted constituting 40% of incidents of anti-Semitism counted in a recent ADL report. The International Ice Hockey Federation bars Israel from participating in world championship events, citing security concerns. Israel calls the ban “anti-Semitic.” The decision prevents the U20 Israeli hockey team from participating in a Division III world championship tournament later this month. (HA, TOI 1/11)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed 2 Palestinians, including a child, during a raid in Fawwar refugee camp. Israeli forces also raided Nur Shams refugee camp for 9 hours using 40 armored vehicles, demolishing 3 homes. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 5 homes in Furush Beit Dajan, displacing 70 people. 55 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarm, including former PLC member Khalida Jarrar. In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities forced 3 Palestinian families to demolish their own homes in Jabel Mukaber and Shu’fat. In Gaza, telecommunications were down throughout Gaza. Israeli forces bombed Khan Yunis, Rafah, al-Bureij refugee camp, Nuseirat refugee camp, Gaza City, and Maghazi, killing dozens of people, including at least 100 in Maghazi. Israeli forces also directly hit the Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s headquarters in Khan Yunis, causing damage. Israel said it had assassinated Hamis al-Najar, a member of the Hamas Legislative Council, in an airstrike in Khan Yunis that also killed his wife, 2 children, and several of his grandchildren. 3 Israeli soldiers were killed in combat. In Lebanon, Israeli forces attacked several sites and Hezbollah injured 9 Israeli soldiers using anti-tank missiles. In the Red Sea, a drone was shot down near Dahab, Egypt. Israel returned the bodies of 80 Palestinians Israeli soldiers had seized in northern Gaza during its ground invasion. The bodies were buried in a mass grave in Rafah. The Gaza media office said Israel stole organs from the bodies. (AJ, HA, UNOCHA 12/26)

An Israeli soldier reportedly died of a fungal infection he had been exposed to in Gaza while 10 were sick with the infection. (HA 12/26; HA 12/27)

PA president Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech calling the events in Gaza greater and more horrific that the Nakba. Abbas said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan was to rid historic Palestine of all Palestinians and said he would continue to work toward Palestinian political reconciliation. PA ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour wrote a letter to the UN Security Council president, saying Israel has ignored Security Council Resolution 2720, adopted on 12/22. (AJ 12/26; AJ 12/27)

Israel said it would no longer grant visas to UN employees automatically, instead judging applicants on a case-by-base. Government spokesperson Eylon Levy said the UN had failed to condemn Hamas for operating out of schools and stealing aid, both charges that Hamas has denied. (AP 12/26)

In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and killed 5 Palestinians and wounded 8 during late-night raids in Biddu and Burqin; Israel claimed that the raids were made against Hamas operatives planning an attack; 2 Israeli soldiers were seriously wounded by their own fire during the raid in Burqin. Israel claimed to have found explosives in 1 of the houses raided. 4 were arrested during the raids. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian with live ammunition during a late-night raid in Kafr Dan; 1 was arrested. Elsewhere, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians protesting the killing of the 5 Palestinians earlier in the day by throwing stones and Molotov cocktails at the Israeli forces in Beit Iksa; 4 were arrested. 8 others were arrested during late-night raids in Kobar, al-Mazra’a al-Gharbiya, Beit Fajjar, and Jalazun refugee camp. In East Jerusalem, 1,000 Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen within 3 nautical miles west of Gaza; no injuries were reported. A fire broke out at a research center belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. It was unclear how the fire, which killed 2 people and injured 1, started. (HA, REU 9/26; AP 9/27)

In the West Bank, Israeli settlers set up mobile homes outside of the Shvut Rachel settlement near Jalud to expand the settlement. Israeli forces demolished several structures in Khirbet Humsa after demolishing more than 30 structures on 7/7. Israeli forces also demolished 1 large Canaanite-era cemetery near al-Khader to expand a settlement road; the cemetery was dated around 2300 to 1550 B.C.E. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished a large water tank in Bayt Dajan. Palestinian students from Birzeit University held a sit-in protest at the university for the mass arrest of 33 students on 7/14 by Israeli forces in Turmus ‘Ayya, were the students were visiting the family who were victims of a punitive demolition on 7/8. All of the 33 students were released the same day. 10 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in and around ‘Asira al-Qibliya, Marah Rabah, Deir Qaddis, Abu Dis, and ‘Anin. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian was arrested during a house raid in al-Tur. In Gaza, Israeli forces opened fire on Palestinian agricultural lands east of Khuza‘a; no injuries were reported. The Intercept and Local Call reported that Israeli settlers and soldiers had cooperated in the deliberately killing at least 4 Palestinians on 5/14, a day where Israeli soldiers and settlers ultimately killed 11 Palestinians across the West Bank. In videos obtained by B’Tselem, it is evident that Israeli settlers stand side by side with Israeli soldiers firing automatic rifles at Palestinians trying to protect themselves from a settler raid in ‘Urif. Similar joint attacks by settlers and soldiers led to killings of Palestinians in Iskaka, ‘Asira al-Qibliya, and al-Reihiya. (+972, INT 7/15; HA 7/16)

Haaretz said that documents they had examined revealed that the Israeli defense ministry had worked with a Jewish National Fund subsidiary, Himanuta, to purchase Palestinian-owned land in the West Bank and to prevent Palestinians from accessing the land in question. The deals between Himanuta and the defense ministry were made in 2018 and 2019. Among the purchases were a 1,000-dunam (250 acres) plot of land near the Hamra settlement, which Israel closed off to its Palestinian owners more than 50 years ago; a plot of land near Ramallah; the home of the Bakri family in Hebron; and a 218-dunam (54 acres) plot of land near the Argaman settlement. The New York Times reported that Israel is refusing to extricate a Mexican former federal prosecutor, Tomas Zeron De Lucio, who is wanted for falsifying evidence, torture, and misuse of the NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware. According to NYT sources, Israel is refusing the extradition because of the country’s perception of Mexico as supportive of Palestine. The Canadian cybersecurity research group Citizen Lab said that spyware from the Israeli company Candiru was used to spy on more than 100 activists from several countries including Saudi Arabia, Israel, Hungary, Indonesia, the UK, Palestine, Iran, Lebanon, Yemen, Spain, Turkey, Armenia, and Singapore. Spyware was installed on the users’ computers using the Microsoft operating system Windows. Microsoft said it had updated its software to close the hole in its security. 1 of the ways the spyware infected users’ devices was when a user clicked on a URL set up by the attacker. Lebanese prime minister-designate Saad Hariri resigned 9 months after being picked to try to form a government. Hariri’s resignation followed a meeting with President Michel Aoun on 7/14, where he proposed a 24-minister cabinet. Facebook suspended the account of a Palestinian user who uploaded a letter from the Palestinian political prisoner in Israeli jail Khalida Jarrar to her recently deceased daughter. The account was initially suspended for 60 days but was unblocked by Facebook on 7/20. (HA 7/20; HA 7/21)

Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said at a conference hosted by the Geneva Institute that China plans to increase its involvement in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. At the virtual conference were also a member of the Knesset from the Meretz (Vigor) party and Ahmad Majdalani, the PA social development minister. (HA 7/15)

A football exhibition match between Beitar Jerusalem and the Spanish F.C. Barcelona was canceled after Barcelona demanded the game should not be held in Jerusalem, which the owner of Beitar Jerusalem refused. Barcelona’s demand came after weeks of pressure from Palestinians, including chairman of the Palestinian Football Association Jibril Rajoub and Joint List member of Knesset Sami Abu Shehadeh. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers stormed Burin, throwing stones at Palestinian homes, causing damage. Israeli forces demolished a blacksmith shop, a carpentry shop, a car repair shop, a car wash, and a food store in Haris, an agricultural pond near Bardala, and 1 wall in Bani Na‘im. Israeli forces also seized 1 caravan serving as a medical clinic east of Yatta. 5 Palestinians were arrested, including 4 during late-night raids in Hebron and Jenin and 1 at a checkpoint in near the Gush Etzion settlement bloc; during the raids in Jenin, Israeli forces shot and injured, with live ammunition, 6 Palestinians protesting the incursion. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinian families demolished their own homes in Silwan and Jabal Mukaber. 1 Palestinian was arrested during a house raid in Isawiya. Israel expanded the Gaza fishing zone from 9 to 12 nautical miles at its widest area, allowed medical equipment, fishing gear and raw materials for industry use to enter Gaza, and allowed textile exports from Gaza to Israel. (HA 7/12)

Israel prevented the political prisoner Khalida Jarrar from attending her daughter’s funeral after appeals from different parts of Palestinian and Israeli society, including 2 Palestinian-Israeli lawmakers in the Knesset. Israel’s foreign minister Yair Lapid met with 26 foreign ministers from EU countries in Brussels. During the meeting, Foreign Minister Lapid told his EU counterparts that he supports a 2-state solution but that he believes it is unfeasible. Lapid also said that he is for improving the lives of Palestinians by building their economy. Former Jordanian finance minister and royal court official Bassem Awadallah and Sharif Hasan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, were sentenced to 15 years in prison for sedition and incitement against the Jordanian king Abdullah II. China contributed $1 million to the UNRWA emergency appeal for humanitarian aid to Gaza. (WAFA 7/12)

Along Gaza’s border, IDF troops arrest several Palestinians allegedly attempting to cross into Israel near Rafah. They also open fire on Palestinian shepherds and farmland near Dayr al-Balah, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, IDF troops patrol near Hebron, Qalqilya, and Salfit. Israel’s Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit announces his intention to indict Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of fraud, bribery, and breach of trust, pending a hearing. Netanyahu later responds in a televised speech, pledging to “continue serving” for “many years.” The indictments are widely expected to hurt Netanyahu’s chances in the upcoming election on 4/9. A commission empaneled by the UN Human Rights Council publishes a report concluding that there are “reasonable” indications that the IDF committed war crimes in violently dispersing Great March of Return protests last year. In the West Bank, DFLP activists erect a new memorial in Jenin to Khaled Nazzal, the party leader assassinated by Mossad agents in 1986, hours after IDF troops came under fire while removing the original on 6/30. Late at night, IDF troops rearrest Khalida Jarrar, a leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) mbr., during a raid of her home in Ramallah. She was released from Israeli prison on 6/3/2016, having served 12 mos. on charges related to her PFLP membership. IDF troops arrest 6 more Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Hebron and Ramallah. In East Jerusalem, a Palestinian family demolishes its own home in Issawiyya to avoid paying Israeli demolition fees. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats nr. Bayt Lahiya for the 2d day in a row, causing no damage or injuries. Along Gaza’s border, Israeli forces arrest a Palestinian reportedly attempting to cross into Israel in search of a job. Meanwhile, Hamas forces bar a Fatah Central Comm. mbr., Ahmad Halas, from leaving Gaza. For the 6th time this week, errant mortar fire from Syria lands in an open area in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, causing no damage. The IDF returns fire at the source of the mortar. (MNA, TOI 7/1)

Tensions begin to escalate in East Jerusalem over access to Haram al-Sharif when Israeli forces bar all Palestinians from entering the sanctuary between 7:00 and 11:00 A.M., including children who attend school inside. They also close all but 3 entrances and arrest 3 Palestinians in the area.
