Hundreds of Palestinians gather along Gaza’s border fence near Jabaliya refugee camp to set tires on fire and otherwise continue the Great March of Return. IDF troops violently disperse them in the evening, injuring 1. After an incendiary balloon flown from Gaza sparks a small fire and damages a home in southern Israel, the Israeli Air Force conducts air strikes on 2 Hamas sites in central and southern Gaza late at night, causing major damage. In East Jerusalem, MK Yehuda Glick (Likud) leads a group of right-wing Jewish activists on a tour of Haram al-Sharif. Israeli forces arrest 22 Palestinians during raids in Issawiyya. In the West Bank, Israeli forces uproot 50 olive trees from a Palestinian grove near Hebron. IDF troops arrest 5 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Qalqilya and Nablus; and patrol near Qalqilya, Salfit, and Ramallah. Israeli MK Yehuda Glick tours Haram al-Sharif with an escort of heavily armed Israeli security forces. Elsewhere in East Jerusalem, Israeli forces conduct raids in Abu Dis, sparking clashes with dozens of Palestinian students at al-Quds University; there are no reported injuries. They also demolish a Palestinian home in Silwan. In the West Bank, Israeli forces demolish 2 Palestinian homes in Anata refugee camp and a 3d in Bayt Hanina. IDF troops shoot and injure 3 Palestinian journalists amid clashes in Ras Karkar village near Ramallah; arrest 5 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Bethlehem, Hebron, Tulkarm, and Qalqilya. Off Gaza’s coast, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats near Rafah and later near Jabaliya refugee camp, causing no damage or injuries. Paraguay’s Foreign Minister Luis Alberto Castiglioni announces that Paraguay will be returning its embassy in Israel to Tel Aviv, reversing former president Horacio Cartes’ decision to move it to Jerusalem in 5/2018. “Paraguay wants to contribute to an intensification of regional diplomatic efforts to achieve a broad, fair and lasting peace in the Middle East,” he says. In response, the Israeli government announces the closure of the Israeli embassy in Paraguay and a recall of the Israeli ambassador. (WAFA 9/5; HA, MNA, REU, YA 9/6)

The Israeli authorities announce the indefinite closure of the Erez border crossing, following the damage done to the crossing amid protests along the border fence on 9/4. An official statement explains that the closure is to allow for maintenance work. Exceptional humanitarian cases are still allowed to cross. (HA, HA, MNA, MNA, TOI, WAFA, YA 9/5)

Denying a petition from the residents, Israel’s High Court of Justice gives its final authorization for the Israeli government’s plan to evacuate and demolish Khan al-Ahmar, a Bedouin village near Jerusalem. “We have exhausted all legal means at this point and there is nothing more we can do other than be present in the area to protect it and prevent its demolition,” says a PA official who has been working on the case. The Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Committee advances a plan to build 150 housing units in Bayt Hanina, East Jerusalem. The current plan earmarks 75 of the units for Palestinians, but it is unclear if that earmark will remain as the plan proceeds through the authorization process. (HA 9/6; FMEP 9/7)

In East Jerusalem, 3 Israeli MKs—Shuli Moalem-Refaeli (Jewish Home), Yehuda Glick (Likud), and Amir Ohana (Likud)—tour Haram al-Sharif, marking the second such tour since Israeli PM Netanyahu lifted (7/3) his ban on Israeli MKs and ministers visiting the sanctuary. Along Gaza’s border fence, Israeli forces conduct limited incursions to level land near Gaza City and al-Bureij refugee camp. In the West Bank, IDF troops confiscate approximately 10 dunams (2.4 acres) of Palestinian land in central Hebron. They also arrest 12 Palestinians during late-night raids in and around Ramallah, Jenin, Hebron, Salfit, and Qalqilya; and patrol near Hebron. Unidentified assailants open fire on the Beit El settlement near Ramallah, causing minor damage. Israeli troops conduct raids in the area, but they do not apprehend any suspects. Netanyahu announces a major reduction in the amount of traffic allowed to pass into Gaza through the Kerem Shalom border crossing, as well as a constriction of the fishing zone off Gaza’s coast. Fuel, food, and medicine are now the only goods allowed through the crossing. The fishing zone is now six nautical miles after temporarily being expanded to nine nautical miles. The IDF and DM Lieberman frame the new restrictions as a direct response to the wave of incendiary kite and balloon attacks from Gaza in recent weeks. (HA, JP, REU, TOI, YA 7/9; NYT 7/10)

In the West Bank, a Palestinian man is crushed to death in line at a checkpoint nr. Tulkarm, the same checkpoint where 1,000s of Palestinians protested poor conditions on 12/21. An Israeli settler hits a 10-year-old Palestinian boy with his car nr. Bethlehem, moderately injuring him. Overnight, 2 Israeli settlers throw Molotov cocktails at a Palestinian home nr. Hebron and leave racist price-tag graffiti. Israeli forces demolish a home nr. Hebron and raze a nearby agricultural area. IDF troops detain 8 Palestinian children outside Ofer prison nr. Ramallah, then fire tear gas canisters at their parents when they attempt to recover their children. They also arrest a 14-year-old Palestinian girl after she throws stones at Israeli settlers’ cars. Israeli settlers clash with Palestinians in Burin village, then IDF troops open fire on the Palestinians with live ammunition, injuring 4. Off the coast of the Gaza Strip nr. Rafah, Israeli naval forces arrest 3 Palestinian fishermen. In East Jerusalem, unknown assailants throw stones at a bus in Shaykh Jarrah, lightly injuring 1 Palestinian woman. A Jewish Israeli vandalizes the Dormition Abbey nr. the Old City. Then, a Palestinian man stabs an Israeli settler in the back with a screwdriver nearby, moderately injuring him. Under the aegis of the State of Palestine, Pres. Abbas signs a request to join the ICC, and signs many other international treaties and conventions, at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Fatah at the presidential compound in Ramallah. Hundreds of employees of the Hamas-run govt. in Gaza go on a 1-day strike, protesting the PA unity govt.’s decision on 12/30 to rehire civil servants who lost their jobs when Hamas came to power in 2007. (MNA 12/31; AFP 1/1)

Israel’s High Court of Justice rejects a petition to ban all punitive home demolitions, a policy resurrected following the 6/2014 abduction and killing of 3 Israeli settler teenagers. The court also rejects a petition to block the demolition of the Jabal Mukabir homes of the 2 Palestinians who attacked a West Jerusalem synagogue on 11/18. (Israel’s Supreme Court froze the demolition order for the synagogue attackers’ homes on 11/27.) It also, however, freezes the 2d order to demolish the home of the Palestinian who allegedly attempted to assassinate right-wing Jewish activist Yehuda Glick on 10/29. (HA, JP, TOI 12/31; HA 1/1)

In the Gaza Strip, unknown Palestinians fire shots toward IDF troops nr. the Erez crossing, causing no injuries. In 2 separate incidents, IDF troops open fire on Palestinian farmers nr. the border fence, causing no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF informs residents nr. Jenin that 1,000s of dunams of land in the area will be seized; delivers demolition orders for 8 structures to Palestinians in a village nr. Hebron. Elsewhere, a Palestinian throws a Molotov cocktail at a settler nr. Hawara village s. of Nablus, and IDF troops impose a curfew on the village. The IDF conducts arrest raids and house searches nr. Hebron, Nablus, Qalqilya, and in Jenin r.c. Clashes break out with residents nr. Nablus, injuring 4 Palestinians in ‘Askar r.c. Late at night, a group of settlers, accompanied by IDF troops, enters a village e. of Ramallah and tries to burn a Palestinian’s home, but residents stop them. An Israeli settler attempts to run over 3 Palestinians with his car s. of Hebron, causing no injuries or damage. In East Jerusalem, municipal authorities and IDF troops deliver a demolition order to the Silwan home of the Palestinian who was suspected of shooting right-wing Jewish activist Yehuda Glick on 10/29 and was killed hours later by Israeli security forces. Israeli authorities announce that the bodies of the 2 Palestinians who attacked a synagogue in West Jerusalem on 11/18 will not be returned to their families. Following the announcement, clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces break out in the East Jerusalem neighborhoods of Jabal Mukabir, where the men were from, Sur al-Bahir, Silwan, Issawiyya, and al-Tur; 12 Palestinians are injured by rubber-coated metal bullets. Jordan’s govt. formally condemns the attack on the West Jerusalem synagogue on 11/18. The Jordanian parliament holds a moment of silence for the 2 Palestinians who were killed by Israeli police after perpetrating the attack, and Jordanian PM Abdullah Ensour sends a letter of condolence to the men’s family. In East Jerusalem, Israeli security forces shoot and kill a Palestinian in Abu Tor suspected of the attempted assassination of Yehuda Glick on 10/29. During the day, Israeli authorities close Haram al-Sharif to everyone and increase police and border police patrols in the city. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 2 villages nr. Hebron, and in 1 village each nr. Jenin and Tulkarm; patrols in 1 village each nr. Hebron and Jenin. Fatah receives approval from Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Yasir Arafat with a rally in Gaza City, which they schedule for 11/11. This is the 1st time Fatah activists are permitted to hold such a commemoration in Gaza since 2007. (MNA 10/30)

In the Gaza Strip, IDF troops stationed along the border nr. Bayt Lahiya shoot and wound a Palestinian hunting for birds. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Jenin and Jenin r.c., and 1 village each nr. Hebron and Ramallah. An anonymous U.S. official is quoted in the Atlantic describing Israeli PM Netanyahu as a “chickenshit prime minister” who only cares about his political survival. In response, Netanyahu’s office releases a statement saying that the PM “will continue to uphold the security interests of Israel and the historical rights of the Jewish people in Jerusalem, and no amount of pressure will change that.” The White House quickly distances itself from the comments quoted in the article. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Jenin and 1 village nr. Bethlehem at night; patrols in Tulkarm in the morning, in 3 villages nr. Tulkarm in the afternoon, and in 3 villages each nr. Hebron and Jenin, 1 village nr. Qalqilya, and in Tulkarm at night. In Abu Dis, East Jerusalem, an IDF raid sparks clashes, which lead to Israeli forces opening fire on students with rubber-coated metal bullets, injuring 40. The General Union of Palestinian Teachers launches a limited strike in the West Bank in protest at the failure of the Palestinian Authority (PA) to implement previous agreements. The union’s secy.-gen., Ahmad Sahwil, says the union is prepared to begin a full, open-ended strike should the PA not meet its demands. They had threatened a strike in early 9/2013, but called it off following an agreement with the PA on 9/5 to raise teachers’ salaries by 10%. (MNA 11/17)

Three days before the onset of the 2nd round of negotiations in Geneva over Iran’s nuclear program, French pres. François Hollande, along with a delegation of senior officials including FM Laurent Fabius, arrives in Tel Aviv for his 1st official visit to Israel and the o. t. since taking office. (HA 11/18)
