In the West Bank, Israeli forces fired tear gas near a school in ‘Anata, injuring students and staff. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers led by former MK Yehuda Glick toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. Israeli forces assaulted 1 Palestinian at the Damascus Gate Plaza, injuring and arresting him. Israeli authorities demolished 1 commercial structure in Jabel Mukaber. In Gaza, 5 Palestinians were killed and 25 others injured in an explosion during a protest near the Gaza fence. Palestinian officials said the 5 were killed when an explosive device accidentally exploded. 1 other Palestinian succumbed to wounds from the explosion on 9/17. Israeli forces also violently dispersed protesters east of Gaza City, injuring 9, including 3 minors. Palestinians marked the anniversary of the 2005 Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. 6 Palestinians were killed, including 3 members of Fatah, and 15 were wounded during fighting in Ain al-Hilweh refugee camp. The fighting reignited despite a ceasefire agreement from 9/11. 16 people have been killed since 9/7 when fighting broke out again after a month of relative quiet. Hamas and Islamic Jihad called for an immediate ceasefire after a meeting between Hamas Political Bureau deputy chairperson Moussa Abu Marzouk and Islamic Jihad secretary general Ziyad al-Nakhalah in Beirut. In Syria, Israeli forces conducted air strikes in Tartus on 2 separate occasions, killing 2 Syrian soldiers and wounding 6 others. Israeli forces also attacked the Shuairat military airport in the Homs province and several places in the Hama province, causing damage. Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant appeared to brag about the attacks on 9/14 at an event with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he said, “[e]ven last night, we saw proof that in the State of Israel the thunder of planes is louder than all the background noise.” (AJ, AP, HA 9/13; ALM, HA 9/14)

In an interview with the podcast Pod Save the World, U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken said that “what we hear from the Saudis that if this process [normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia] is to move forward, the Palestinian piece is going to be very important,” further stating that “in our judgement, of course, that must – needs to involve a 2-state solution.” (HA 9/13)

The U.S. signed a security agreement called the “Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement” with Bahrain, pledging to defend the country from attacks. (NYT 9/13)

Off the coast of Gaza nr. Gaza City, Israeli naval forces fire on Palestinian fishing boats, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF floods an olive grove outside Bethlehem during a drill. The IDF also conducts house searches and raids in 1 village each nr. Tubas, Nablus, and Jenin, arresting 2 Palestinians and sparking clashes nr. Jenin; arrests 5 Palestinians in a village nr. Bethlehem; patrols in 3 villages nr. Hebron, 5 nr. Ramallah, and 2 each nr. Jericho and Qalqilya. A group of Palestinian youth affiliated with Fatah steal a Tnuva milk truck and dump its contents in the middle of al-Manara Square in Ramallah. Tnuva is 1 of the 6 Israeli companies targeted by the boycott initiated by the National Comm. against Israeli Punitive Measures on 2/9. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces conduct raids in the Old City and al-‘Izzariya, arresting 5 Palestinians and issuing summons to 3. In n. Israeli state prosecutors tell the High Court of Justice that they are no longer pursuing the punitive demolition of the Silwan home of the Palestinian alleged to have shot and injured right-wing activist Yehuda Glick, leader of the messianic Temple Mount movement, on 10/29/ 2014. The prosecutors argue, instead, for the man’s room to be blocked off. (TOI 3/2)

UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Robert Serry meets with Hamas officials in Gaza and proposes a 3–5-year hudna, or truce. (AFP, HA 3/2; HA 3/9)

In Washington, Israeli PM Netanyahu addresses the AIPAC conference, saying he has a “moral obligation” to warn the U.S. Congress on 3/3 of the dangers of a potential deal with Iran. Hours later, U.S. Pres. Obama tells Reuters that Netanyahu’s trip to the U.S., and the way it was organized, is a distraction, but not “permanently destructive” to the U.S.-Israel relationship. In the West Bank, a Palestinian man is crushed to death in line at a checkpoint nr. Tulkarm, the same checkpoint where 1,000s of Palestinians protested poor conditions on 12/21. An Israeli settler hits a 10-year-old Palestinian boy with his car nr. Bethlehem, moderately injuring him. Overnight, 2 Israeli settlers throw Molotov cocktails at a Palestinian home nr. Hebron and leave racist price-tag graffiti. Israeli forces demolish a home nr. Hebron and raze a nearby agricultural area. IDF troops detain 8 Palestinian children outside Ofer prison nr. Ramallah, then fire tear gas canisters at their parents when they attempt to recover their children. They also arrest a 14-year-old Palestinian girl after she throws stones at Israeli settlers’ cars. Israeli settlers clash with Palestinians in Burin village, then IDF troops open fire on the Palestinians with live ammunition, injuring 4. Off the coast of the Gaza Strip nr. Rafah, Israeli naval forces arrest 3 Palestinian fishermen. In East Jerusalem, unknown assailants throw stones at a bus in Shaykh Jarrah, lightly injuring 1 Palestinian woman. A Jewish Israeli vandalizes the Dormition Abbey nr. the Old City. Then, a Palestinian man stabs an Israeli settler in the back with a screwdriver nearby, moderately injuring him. Under the aegis of the State of Palestine, Pres. Abbas signs a request to join the ICC, and signs many other international treaties and conventions, at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Fatah at the presidential compound in Ramallah. Hundreds of employees of the Hamas-run govt. in Gaza go on a 1-day strike, protesting the PA unity govt.’s decision on 12/30 to rehire civil servants who lost their jobs when Hamas came to power in 2007. (MNA 12/31; AFP 1/1)

Israel’s High Court of Justice rejects a petition to ban all punitive home demolitions, a policy resurrected following the 6/2014 abduction and killing of 3 Israeli settler teenagers. The court also rejects a petition to block the demolition of the Jabal Mukabir homes of the 2 Palestinians who attacked a West Jerusalem synagogue on 11/18. (Israel’s Supreme Court froze the demolition order for the synagogue attackers’ homes on 11/27.) It also, however, freezes the 2d order to demolish the home of the Palestinian who allegedly attempted to assassinate right-wing Jewish activist Yehuda Glick on 10/29. (HA, JP, TOI 12/31; HA 1/1)

In East Jerusalem, Israeli security forces shoot and kill a Palestinian in Abu Tor suspected of the attempted assassination of Yehuda Glick on 10/29. During the day, Israeli authorities close Haram al-Sharif to everyone and increase police and border police patrols in the city. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 2 villages nr. Hebron, and in 1 village each nr. Jenin and Tulkarm; patrols in 1 village each nr. Hebron and Jenin. Fatah receives approval from Hamas authorities in the Gaza Strip to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Yasir Arafat with a rally in Gaza City, which they schedule for 11/11. This is the 1st time Fatah activists are permitted to hold such a commemoration in Gaza since 2007. (MNA 10/30)
