Occupied Palestine/Israel: 22-year-old Palestinian shot 18 August in Tammun dies [FJ 8/28]. Hospital officials state that 25 Palestinians are treated for beatings [FJ 8/28]

Occupied Palestine/Israel: A Jerusalem Post poll reveals that 49% of 1,200 Israeli Jews believe Israel should "cause Arabs to leave" in order to preserve democratic character of state; 28% feel Israel should give up territories to maintain democratic character of Israel [LAT 8/13]. Food shortages are reported in Qalqiliyyah (under curfew for 4 days) and Qabatiyyah (under curfew for 19 days) [FJ 8/14].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: In Maghazi camp Israeli soldiers shoot, kill 23-year-old Palestinian and wound 2nd man after group of Palestinians attacks army patrol [LAT 8/13].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Sit-in strikes are held in Bethlehem and Bayt Sahur to protest raids by tax collectors [FJ 6/12].

Other Countries: Democratic presidential nominee apparent, Michael Dukakis, reiterates his belief that U. S. Embassy in Israel should be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem [NYT 6/11, WP 6/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli security police arrest and demolish house of 26-year-old Palestinian who confessed to attacking the Israeli appointed mayor of al-Birah [NYT 6/11, WP 6/11]. Troops order 100 Israelis to leave the W. Bank village of Bayta; the Israelis were planting olive trees to protest the army's treatment of the village in the wake of the shooting death of a 15-year-old Israeli girl [WP 6/10]. Protests erupt in Gaza City following Friday prayers [FJ 6/12].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Leaflet issued by Unified National Command of the Uprising offers to end the Palestinian protests if Israelis: 1) withdraw army from cities, villages, and camps; 2) release prisoners; 3) allow deported Palestinians to return; 4) cancel military orders and civil regulations issued since beginning of the uprising; 5) allow democratic and free elections in the towns and villages in the occupied territories; 6) remove restrictions placed on the national economy [NYT 5/31]. MK Dedi Zucker demands the IDF set up a commission to protect human rights of prisoners. 20 Israeli law professors sign petition expressing concern about existence of a dual legal system-one for Israelis and one for Arabs [FJ 6/5].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: IDF reservist accuses members of the IDF of systematically abusing Palestinian prisoners [LAT 5/3 1]. Scattered clashes occur throughouthe occupied territories [LAT 5/31, FJ 6/5]. A strike closes shops and businesses in East Jerusalem and the W. Bank, but is less successful in Gaza [LAT 5/311. In Jit Jewish settlers set fire to 8 dunums of Arab crops [FJ 5/6]. In Hebron 70 people are arresteduring clashes; in Yamun at least 50 are injured; in Gaza 20 are hurt in clashes [FJ 5/6].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israel deports 8 Palestinians, including Gazan Islamic Jihad leader 'Abd al-Aziz 'Awdah, to S. Lebanon security zone. Expulsion orders are issued to 6 Bayta residents and 6 other Palestinians from occupied territories [WP 4/12; CSM 4/13]. In response to charges brought by Israeli civil rights group, Israeli High Court decides army should give at least 48 hours' notice before demolishing more homes in Bayta. Maj. Gen. Ehud Barak, deputy chief of staff, states 1 of 13 Bayta homes may have been demolished mistakenly, says 4,800 Palestinians activists are being held in Israeli prisons, including 900 in administrative detention. Other Countries: At World Court in the Hague, UN argues that U.S. attempt to close PLO's observer mission to UN is violation of U.S. treaty obligations [WP, NYT 4/12]. In speech before Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Democratic presidential candidate Michael Dukakis blames Arab leaders for continued violence in Middle East, states support for Shultz peace initiative [WP 4/12]. In Cyprus, PLO officials negotiate with hijackers of Kuwaiti airliner in effort to free hostages in exchange for refueling plane [NYT, WP 4/12].

Military Action

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Palestinian is shot, killed in clash with Israeli troops in Kafr al-Ra'i, near Jenin; Palestinian sources report 3 killed, 5 injured [WP 4/12; FJ 4/17]. Curfews are in force in Balatah and 'Ayn Bayt al-Ma' camps. At least 2 protesters are seriously wounded by army gunfire in Gaza Strip clashes [FJ 4/17].
