Axios reported that UAE foreign minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan told former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the UAE has concerns about Netanyahu’s alliance with Itamar Ben-Gvir and the Otzma Yehudit party. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers with dogs attacked Palestinian herders and their sheep near Kisan, injuring 1 Palestinian and several sheep. Israeli settlers also uprooted olive saplings near Hebron. Israeli forces demolished parts of a house under construction in Luban al-Sharqiyya, 1 house in al-Walaja, and 1 house in Anabta; during the demolition in al-Walaja, clashes broke out between Israeli forces and Palestinians, leading to tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also delivered a demolition order for 14 structures, including a health clinic in Zanouta near Hebron and 1 apartment building and 2 houses near Nablus. Elsewhere, Israeli forces raided Iraq Burin and Sanur, leading to clashes; tear-gas related injuries were reported. 10 Palestinians were arrested during raids in and around Beitunia, Birzeit, Kafr Ni‘ma, Bayt Rima, Dheisheh refugee camp, Hebron, and Dura. In East Jerusalem, 3 Palestinians were arrested in al-Tur and Shu‘fat refugee camp. Off the coast of Gaza, Israeli naval forces opened fire at Palestinian fishermen 3-6 nautical miles west of Bayt Lahiya; no injuries were reported. In Gaza, Israeli forces arrested 1 Palestinian who was accompanying his wife to East Jerusalem for her brain surgery through the Erez crossing; she was forced to wait 12 hours before being allowed to travel to East Jerusalem with her mother instead of her husband. The Biden administration froze a ban on transactions involving the Houthi rebel group in Yemen after the Trump administration designated the group a foreign terrorist organization, stoking fears that the already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen would worsen. The freeze is in effect until 1/26. The Biden administration later said it is reviewing the designation of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization. In the West Bank, more than 50 Palestinians were injured, including 10 by live ammunition and 13 by rubber-coated bullets, when Israeli forces raided al-Amari refugee camp, leading to clashes. Elsewhere, Israeli forces prevented farmers from harvesting their olive crops in several villages near Bethlehem. During the day, the IDF fires tear gas, stun grenades to disperse Palestinians holding a nonviolent demonstration in Iraq Burin to protest Israeli land confiscations, causing no reported injuries; soldiers then erect a checkpoint at the village entrance and declare the area a closed military zone. Jewish settlers fr. Halamish settlement nr. Ramallah barricade the entrance to Nabi Salih village and stone Palestinian vehicles; the IDF removes the settlers. At a massive rally in Istanbul commemorating the 1st anniversary of Israel’s 5/2010 attack on the aid flotilla to Gaza that killed 9 Turkish activists aboard the Mavi Marmara, the flotilla organizers, the U.S.-based Free Gaza Movement (FGM), and the Turkish charity Humanitarian Relief Foundation (known by its Turkish acronym IHH), announce plans for at least 1,500 activists and 10 boats to set sale in late 6/2011 as part of the “Freedom Flotilla II” to break the Gaza siege. The IDF also fires tear gas, stun grenades at Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists staging a nonviolent march through Iraq Burin village nr. Nablus to nearby Brakha settlement to protest the settlers’ seizure of village lands to expand the settlement. The Israeli human rights group Peace Now reports that in late 4/2011, the Israeli DMin. approved construction of 294 settlement housing units in Beitar Ilit (south and west of Jerusalem), saying tenders for the construction should be issued soon. In the West Bank, the IDF makes a rare daytime incursion into Bayt Umar village, 1 of the 4 Hebron-area villages raided on 2/4, setting up a checkpoint in the center of town and chasing away Palestinians; they withdraw after 3 hrs. without staging any raids or making any arrests. Late at night, the IDF raids an apartment building in al-Bireh nr. Ramallah that houses international activists working with the International Solidarity Movement, searching for individuals “known to have been involved in illegal riots that interfered with Israeli security operations [e.g., weekly separation wall protests],” checking visas and passports, and arresting 1 Spanish journalist and 1 Australian activist.
