Israeli forces violently dispersed a funeral procession in Abu Dis for a Palestinian woman who was killed in June 2021 and whose body was handed to her family on 8/23; 1 was injured by a baton round to his head. Israeli forces demolished 1 agricultural structure and 1 carwash in Huwwara and residential and agricultural structures belonging to 8 families near Fasayil. 14 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Bireh, Jalazun refugee camp, Beit Rima, Silwad, Qatanna, al-Azza refugee camp, Husan, Beit Sahour, Nablus, and Jenin. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Silwan, displacing 10. 1 6-year-old Palestinian boy died in Gaza after being denied exit permits for medical treatment at the Hadassah medical center in Jerusalem. The boy was unable to attend 2 appointments for medical treatment on 1/12 and 8/10, as the request for his exit permit remained “under review.” (HA 9/1)

The Israeli army suspended 4 soldiers of the Ultra-Orthodox Netzah Yehuda Battalion after a video surfaced of them beating 2 Palestinians near Ramallah. The 4 soldiers had detained the 2 Palestinians after stopping their car. A statement from the Israeli military said that the soldiers used “unnecessary force.” (AP, HA, MEMO 8/24)

In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian succumbed to injuries sustained by Israeli forces during a raid in Nablus on 8/9. Israeli forces demolished 1 house in Farasin, displacing 8 people, and delivered a stop-work notice for 1 commercial structure in Nahalin. 12 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Ni‘lin, Tubas, Qiffin, Fasayil, al-Khader, and Hebron. PA president Mahmoud Abbas met with Türkiye president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara. President Erdoğan said that the PA and other Palestinian factions had welcomed Türkiye’s normalization with Israel, saying “that these steps will contribute to the solution of the Palestinian issue and the improvement of the situation for the Palestinian people.” President Abbas did not mention the normalization in his comments but thanked Türkiye for its support of the Palestinian people. 1 day after reporting that the U.S. and Iran were getting closer to reaching an agreement on reentering the Iran Nuclear Deal, the U.S. conducted air strikes in Syria on targets said to be affiliated with the Iranian-backed groups. In the West Bank, Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Hebron, injuring 1 child with live ammunition. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Taqqua, causing tear-gas related injuries. Elsewhere, Israeli forces delivered a demolition notice for an EU-funded school in al-Samiya. Israeli forces also demolished 1 house and 1 agricultural structure in al-‘Awja and 1 carpentry shop in Husan, and delivered 4 demolition orders for houses in Fasayil. 11 Palestinians were arrested in al-Mughayyir, Deir Jarir, Abud, Jaba‘, al-Khader, and Bethlehem. In East Jerusalem, 1 Palestinian family demolished their own home in Bayt Hanina, displacing 6, including 4 children. 3 Palestinians were arrested at the Mount of Olives. U.S. ambassador to Israel Tom Nides said in an interview that the U.S. fully backed Israel’s attack on Gaza over the weekend, calling Islamic Jihad “bad guys.” Ambassador Nides further said that the U.S. was not informed about Israel’s Operation Breaking Dawn beforehand but was not surprised. In the West Bank, Israeli forces shot and injured 1 Palestinian trying to enter Israel for work at the separation wall west of Jenin. Israeli forces also seized 1,480 dunams (366 acres) of land near the Shilo settlement, taken from Qaryut, Jalud, Turmus ‘Ayya, and al-Mughayyir villages. 3 Palestinians were arrested during a raid in al-Fasayil. Haaretz reported that the Israeli military police was investigating 16 out of 60 killings of Palestinians in the West Bank by Israeli forces during the 1st 6 months of 2022. Of the 60 killed, 15 were children and 4 were women. Israeli forces killed 70 Palestinians in the West Bank in 2021, 19 in 2020, and 20 in 2019. (HA 7/13)

Palestinians living in the Masafer Yatta area asked the Israeli high court of justice to issue an interim injunction against Israeli military exercises in the area, citing a munition hitting a home during an exercise on 7/6. (HA 7/13)

U.S. secretary of state Antony Blinken said that he had invited the family of the Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed by Israeli forces on 5/11, to the White House. The invitation comes as the Biden administration has received severe criticism for whitewashing the Israeli killing by not firmly blaming Israel for the killing and by refusing to call for any consequences. It was unclear if President Biden will partake in the meeting. U.S. president Joe Biden landed in Tel Aviv for a 4-day trip of the Middle East that will include meetings with Palestinian, Israeli, and Saudi leaders. In a speech, President Biden voiced support for a 2-state solution but said “even though I know it is not in the near-term.” PA minister of social development Ahmed Majdalani called Biden’s words meaningless, saying Biden seeks to promote Israeli normalization with Arab countries over addressing the situation on the ground. During the 1st day of his 4-day tour, Biden also visited the Yad Vashem. In a prerecorded interview with Israeli Channel 12, Biden emphasized that his trip to the Middle East was about having Israel “accepted as an equal” in the region. Biden also dismissed members of his own party who call Israel an apartheid state and said that he would not remove the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps from the U.S. list of foreign terrorist organizations even if that blocked a deal in which the U.S. would reenter the Iran Nuclear Deal. Elsewhere, Israeli forces demolished 1 Palestinian home under construction in Aqabat Jaber refugee camp. Israeli forces also demolished 1 Palestinian home and delivered a stop-work notice to another in al-Twana in the Masafer Yatta area. 15 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in al-Bireh, Silwad, ‘Askar refugee camp, Beita, Qabatiya, al-Arroub refugee camp, Hebron, al-Ubeidiya, Beitunia, Silwad, and Fasayil. The U.S. White House announced that president Joe Biden will visit Palestine, Israel, and Saudi Arabia on 7/13-7/16, after the trip was postponed. The trip was originally scheduled for June. During his trip, President Biden is scheduled to meet with PA president Mahmoud Abbas, Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett, and Saudi crown price Mohammed bin Salman. Iran’s Fars News reported that 1 employee at the Semnan Space Center was killed while on a mission. The reporting followed the death of an Iranian aerospace expert working for the Revolutionary Guard on 6/12. The initial reporting said the man was killed in a car accident. Several Iranians linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, nuclear, and missile programs have been killed or mysteriously died in the past weeks. In the West Bank, 1 Palestinian high school student who was shot by Israeli forces on 4/9 using live ammunition on her way home from school in Deir Ghazaleh succumbed to her injures. Israeli forces shot and seriously wounded 2 Palestinians during a raid in al-Yamun; 1 would later succumb to his injuries on 4/22. Israeli forces also shot and injured 3 Palestinians during a raid in Qarawat Bani Zeid. Elsewhere, Israeli forces placed dirt mounds on rural roads in the Masafer Yatta area and seized 1 school vehicle in al-Fakhit. 15 Palestinians were arrested during late-night raids in Husan, al-Yamun, Ramallah, and Fasayil. In East Jerusalem, 561 Israeli settlers toured the Haram al-Sharif compound. 1 Palestinian was arrested during a late-night raid. In Gaza, 1 rocket was launched at Israel, causing no damage or injuries. Israel subsequently fired a missile at Khan Yunis, causing damage. Hamas said it had fired an anti-aircraft missile at the jet conducting the air strike but that the missile had failed to hit the jet. An investigation by The New Yorker revealed that Spain had used the Israeli company NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware to hack the phones of 60 Catalonian leaders and activists. The investigation also revealed that Pegasus spyware was used against employees of UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s office. Citizen Lab, which cooperated with The New Yorker for the story, suspected that the UAE was behind the hack. In the West Bank, 1 Israeli settler shot and killed 1 Palestinian man after he had stabbed and injured 1 other Israeli settler with a screwdriver in a bus near the Efrat settlement south of Bethlehem. Israeli settlers threw an incendiary device at 1 Palestinian minor in Jinba, causing burns to his face and hands. Elsewhere, Israeli settlers attacked 1 Palestinian herder near Fasayil, throwing stones and releasing a dog on him, causing injuries. Israeli forces shot and killed 2 Palestinians and injured 14 others during a daytime arrest raid in Jenin refugee camp. Israel said that the arrest raid was related to the attack on 3/29 in Bnei Brak in which 5 were killed; 31 were arrested during the raid. PA president Mahmoud Abbas condemned the raid, saying Israel wants to escalate tensions ahead of the start of Ramadan.
