The IDF responds with 8 air strikes in the Gaza Strip, targeting military training sites belonging to Hamas’s Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades, and the Popular Resistance Comms. (PRC) in the c. Gaza Strip, Rafah, and Khan Yunis. Damage is sustained, and 2 civilians are wounded when they are hit by shrapnel in separate attacks. Off the coast nr. Bayt Lahiya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishermen, causing no damage or injuries. Meanwhile, a 10-year-old boy dies, succumbing to injuries sustained in an Israeli air strike on 6/11. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in Ramallah and 8 villages nearby, Nablus and 4 villages and ‘Askar r.c. nearby, Tulkarm and 3 villages and Nur Shams r.c. nearby, Tubas and 1 village and al-Fara‘a r.c. nearby, Jenin and 1 nearby village, Jericho and ‘Ayn al-Sultan r.c. nearby, 1 village each nr. Israeli PM Netanyahu announces that the Israeli govt. holds the PA responsible for the fate of the 3 missing Israeli teenagers, since “the terrorists originated from Palestinian territory.” Anonymous PA officials tell the media that Abbas has instructed his security services to help in the manhunt. Meanwhile, the IDF continues intensive sweeps of the s. West Bank, and wideranging arrest raids, which pick up 80 Palestinians, including 4 mbrs. of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC). Islamic Jihad military wing al-Quds Brigades warns that it will respond if Israel continues to violate the post-Operation Pillar of Defense cease-fire agreement. Spokesperson Abu Ahmad says that the group is giving Egypt a chance to maintain the terms of the truce. (MNA 1/18)

In the Gaza Strip, the IDF opens fire on Palestinians close to the border fence nr. Jabalya, wounding 1, and in a similar incident, the IDF opens fire on Palestinians close to the border fence nr. Bayt Lahiya, injuring 1. The IDF also opens fire on Palestinian fishermen nr. al-Waha, causing no injuries. In the West Bank, the IDF fatally shoots a Palestinian teenager in Aida r.c. in Bethlehem during clashes in the camp. The IDF patrols in 1 village each nr. Jericho and Tulkarm in the afternoon, and in 1 village each nr. Ramallah and Tulkarm at night; conducts house searches and arrest raids in 1 village nr. Qalqilya at night. Israeli soldiers attack the weekly nonviolent demonstrations held by Palestinians, Israelis, and internationals in 4 villages nr. Ramallah (Bil‘in, Ni‘lin, al-Nabi Salih, Budrus), 1 village nr. Bethlehem (al-Ma‘sara), 1 village nr. Qalqilya (Kafr Qaddum), and 1 village nr. Hebron (Susia). In total, 3 Palestinians in Budrus and 2 in Kafr Qaddum are wounded by rubber-coated steel bullets. In addition, Palestinian activists establish a new tent protest village nr. Bayt Iksa close to Jerusalem, calling it al-Karamah (‘‘Dignity’’). Unidentified Palestinians fire 2 rockets fr. Gaza into Israel, causing no damage or injuries; 1 rocket is intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome antimissile system. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts arrest raids, house searches in Hebron in the evening and nr. Hebron late at night. Jewish settlers fr. Ma’on and Susia settlements nr. Hebron uproot at least 45 olive trees fr. a plot of nearby Palestinian land. OCHA reports that Israeli authorities in East Jerusalem demolished 1 Palestinian animal pen and forced a Palestinian family to demolish an extension to their home. Pro-Israel Republican donor Sheldon Adelson, who previously pledged to spend $100 m. of his personal wealth to defeat Obama in the 2012 presidential campaign, agrees to give at least $6.5 m. to fund a new advertising campaign (word of mouth, social media, television) by the Republican Jewish Coalition aimed at drawing Jewish voters in the key battleground states of Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania away from Pres. Obama and to Republican candidate Mitt Romney. (NYT 7/25)

The Israeli High Court rejects the state’s 3/11/12 request to delay the evacuation of the unauthorized settlement outpost of Migron until a new housing at a new site is completed in 2015, ordering it to be dismantled by 8/1/12. An anonymous Israeli official says that the evacuated Migron settlers will likely move to the new site near Psagot immediately and begin work to fulfill the long-term government plan as laid out on 3/11/12. A settlement supporter says, “People close to Netanyahu teased the Peace Now movement [which brought the case on behalf of the Palestinian land owners], we should actually bless them because now we’re going to build another settlement which is not disputed legally, and it’s going to be much, much larger.” (NYT, WP, WT 3/26; WP 3/31; JPI 4/6)

Hrs. before her arrival, Israel releases 198 Palestinian prisoners as a gesture to Abbas, including 2 long-held prisoners given life sentences for murdering Israelis: Said al-Atba (a mbr. of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine [DFLP] convicted in 1977) and Muhammad Abu Ali (convicted in 1980; elected to the PA legislature representing Fatah while jailed); none of those released are fr.
