In the West Bank, Israeli settlers threw stones at Palestinian vehicles traveling near Burin and the Za‘atara checkpoint, causing damage. Israeli settlers damaged Palestinian property and stole agricultural equipment in Shufa. Israeli forces violently dispersed Palestinians during a late-night raid in Rumana, causing tear-gas related injuries. Israeli forces also shot and injured 1 Palestinian journalist with a rubber-coated bullet during a raid in Ramallah; others suffered tear-gas related injuries and 1 was arrested. 3 others were arrested during a late-night raid in Hebron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli forces shot and killed 1 Palestinian man after he shot and killed 1 Israeli settler and injured 4 others, including 2 soldiers in the Old City; Hamas said the man, from Shu‘fat refugee camp, was a member of its organization. Clashes later broke out in Shu‘fat refugee camp when Israeli forces raided the camp, arresting members of the Palestinian man’s family, including his son, daughter, and brother. Israeli settlers affiliated with the Religious Zionism party, and 2 MKs from the party, made calls for revenge during a march near the Jaffa Gate. In Israel, 1 Palestinian man from the West Bank was arrested after allegedly stabbing 1 Israeli man and attempting to stab another in Jaffa. In the West Bank, an Israeli private security guard shot and killed 1 Palestinian woman at the Qalandia checkpoint, claiming she carried a knife and charged toward the checkpoint; it was reported that the Israeli forces let the woman bleed out. Israeli forces also violently dispersed Palestinian protesters in Kafr Qaddum, injuring 1 with a rubber-coated bullet; others suffered tear-gas related injuries. 6 Palestinians were arrested, including 3 minors in Aida refugee camp, 1 at a checkpoint near Qalqilya, and 2 during late-night raids in Heron. In East Jerusalem, Israeli settlers sprayed pepper spray at 2 Palestinian minors by the Jaffa Gate. 3 Palestinians were arrested by Israeli undercover forces in al-Tur. In the Gaza Strip, Egyptian authorities open the Rafah border crossing for the 2d day in a row, allowing students and around 220 tons of medical supplies to cross into Gaza. Off the coast nr. Bayt Lahiya, Israeli naval forces open fire on Palestinian fishing boats overnight, causing no damage or injuries. In the West Bank, Israeli settlers, accompanied by IDF troops, attack around 30 Palestinian farmers nr. Bethlehem, causing no injuries. Meanwhile, the IDF improves conditions at the checkpoint nr. Tulkarm where thousands of Palestinians held an impromptu strike on 12/21. Separately, IDF troops detain Gideon Levy and Alex Levac, Israeli journalists with Haaretz, for entering Area A without a permit, as well as 2 Palestinians at a mobile checkpoint in al-Fawar r.c. The IDF also conducts house searches and arrest raids nr. Nablus, Ramallah, and Hebron; patrols nr. Qalqilya and Hebron; delivers 2 demolition notices to a village w. of Hebron. In East Jerusalem, around 68 right-wing Jewish activists enter Haram al-Sharif and tour the area. Meanwhile, Israeli forces detain 3 Palestinians in the Old City. Later, they raid a Palestinian shop in the area and assault its employees. In response to the recent crackdown on Palestinian businesses in the area, several Palestinian shop owners go on strike and protest nr. Jaffa Gate. Israeli security forces conduct overnight arrest raids in the Old City. Separately, Israeli forces issue 5 demolition orders to Palestinian homes in al-Tur; demolish 4 Palestinian homes and 2 barns in al-‘Izzariya. The IDF sends troops, bulldozers into n. Gaza to level land along the border nr. Bayt Hanun; troops fire toward nearby residential areas to keep Palestinians indoors, causing no injuries. The UN reports that in the previous wk., 4 Palestinians were injured in tunnel collapses on the Rafah border. The UN Development Program reports that it has begun a $12-m. project to remove the nearly 420,000 tons of rubble created by OCL. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches nr. Hebron, Nablus. Palestinians report that in the previous wk., Israeli authorities removed remains fr. 300 graves at a Muslim cemetery nr. the Jaffa Gate in Jerusalem to make way for construction of Israel’s national Tolerance Museum; the remains were reburied in a mass grave elsewhere. A mysterious explosion levels a building in Lebanon’s Khirbat Slim, 12 mi. fr. the Israeli border, causing no casualties; Lebanese and Hizballah authorities secure the site, barring access to UNIFIL soldiers. Israel claims the site housed a Hizballah arms cache, indicating that Hizballah is rearming in violation of UN Res. 1701 that ended the 2006 Lebanon war. Hizballah claims that the explosion was caused by unexploded IDF cluster munitions left over fr. the war. (NYT 7/16)
