In the Gaza Strip, IDF troops conduct 2 limited incursions nr. Khan Yunis to level land alongside the border fence. In the West Bank, the IDF conducts house searches and arrest raids in 1 village nr. Hebron at night; patrols in 1 village nr. Jenin at night. In Eizariya neighborhood in East Jerusalem, Palestinian protesters smash holes in the separation wall to mark 9 years since the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion on the illegality of the barrier. Gulf states approve $8 billion in aid for Egypt, as interim pres. Adly Mansour appoints economist Hazem el-Beblawi as prime minister. Saudi Arabia will give $5 billion in aid, and the United Arab Emirates a further $3 billion ($2 billion of the latter come in the form of an interest-free loan). The contributions are a much-needed boost for authorities financially struggling due to a drop in foreign investment. (AP, DS, REU 7/9)

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu confirms the appointment of Ron Dermer as the country’s new amb. to the U.S. replacing Michael Oren in the fall. Dermer has spent 4 years as a political adviser to Netanyahu and is viewed as a supporter of the Republican Party. (HA, ToI 7/10)

In an apparent assassination attempt aimed at Hamas political leader Hussein Abu Kuwayk, the IDF fires rockets at a truck driving in Ramallah, killing Abu Kuwayk's wife and 3 children, plus 2 Palestinian bystanders. The IDF reenters Jenin r.c., sparking heavy street fighting that leaves at least 9 Palestinians dead, including a doctor killed when his ambulance is hit by an IDF tank shell, also wounding 5 paramedics. The IDF also remains in Balata; temporarily invades Rafah refugee camp, killing 3 Palestinians, bulldozing several Palestinian homes; fatally shoots 1 Palestinian at a checkpoint nr. Qalqilya; shells, destroys the PSF headquarters in Bethlehem; fires shells fr. gunboats at the PA headquarters in Gaza City but misses; directs heavy machine gun fire at Tamun. Late this evening in Tel Aviv, an AMB gunman (a Balata resident) kills 3 Israelis, wounds 31 before being shot dead by a restaurant patron. Sharon tells journalists, "If the Palestinians are not being beaten, there will be no negotiations. The aim [of Israel's recent attacks on the Palestinians] is to increase the number of losses on the other side. Only after they have been battered will we be able to conduct talks." Bisharat, firing 8 rockets at his car as he drives nr. Jinin, also killing 2 passengers. The PA charges Israel with a major violation of the cease-fire. The IDF also directs shells, heavy machine gun fire at residential areas of Bethlehem, Rafah. Palestinians fire 5 mortars at Gush Katif settlement in Gaza, causing no damage. Jewish settlers fire on Palestinian homes in Safarin, injuring 1 Palestinian; place 3 mobile homes, a tent on a new settlement site nr. Tulkarm. The IDF reinforces the blockade on Tulkarm, digging 3 trenches around the city; tightens closures on Jinin, Nablus; digs trenches around Tubas. Another Israeli injured in the 6/1 Tel Aviv bombing dies of her injuries, raising the toll fr. the attack to 22. A Palestinian dies of injuries received on 6/17. Israel accuses the PA of failing to act to prevent "terrorism" during the 1st wk. of the cease-fire implementation, declares that the 6-wk. cooling-off period (stage 3 of the Tenet plan) will not begin on 6/20 as scheduled, demands that Sharon "reassess" the cease-fire with the Palestinians.
