Israel returns the bodies of 91 Palestinians (79 to the West Bank, 12 to Gaza) killed inside Israel, mostly while carrying out attacks on Israelis; the oldest body in Israel’s possession was killed in 1975. Israel agreed to the significant concession on 5/14 as part of the deal to end the Palestinian prisoners’ mass hunger strike (see QU in JPS 164). (NYT, WT 6/1)

The IDF patrols in 1 village each nr. Jenin, Ramallah, and Tulkarm in the morning (firing tear gas at stonethrowing Palestinians who confront them in 1 instance); in 2 villages nr. Ramallah, and 1 village each nr. Jenin, Jericho, Qalqilya, and Salfit in the afternoon; and in 2 villages nr. Qalqilya late at night. The IDF also conducts late-night arrest raids, house searches nr. Israel’s atty. gen. decides to prosecute fmr. Ha’Aretz journalist Uri Blau for illegal possession of classified documents related to a 2008 investigative report he wrote (approved by Israel’s military censor) revealing that senior IDF officers had authorized targeted killings of wanted Palestinians in the West Bank in violation of a High Court ruling banning assassinations of militants who could be apprehended. The decision makes Blau the 1st Israeli journalist to be charged for receiving leaked documents. In 2008, he had obtained 1,800 IDF documents (100s classified) from an IDF soldier, Anat Kam, currently serving 54 mos. for stealing the documents. (WP 6/1)

J Street says it is on track to raise $2 m. for 60 congressional races for 2012—its largest campaign effort to date. The success is seen as evidence that hawkish pro-Israel advocates no longer have a monopoly on setting the U.S. political agenda on Israel and that J Street has successfully created an outlet for a sector of pro-Israel donors who never felt represented by the established pro-Israel lobbies. Cross-border exchanges in Gaza continue overnight and throughout the day. The PRCs, the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade (AMB), and a small Salafist group (the Abdullah Azzam Brigades) fire around 17 rockets (including at least 4 Grads) and at least 2 mortars into Israel, seriously injuring 2 Israelis and damaging a religious seminary and a synagogue. The IDF carries out at least 25 air strikes (warplanes and drones) and 5 artillery strikes, killing at least another 7 Palestinians (5 militants and 2 bystanders, including 1 child) and wounding at least 40; the attacks include the targeted assassination of Islamic Jihad’s senior military cmdr. Mu’ataz Quraiqe‘ in Gaza City, also killing his brother and 2-yr.-old son. (The other 4 militants killed, including senior PRC cmdr. Samed Abed, apparently were targeted after firing rockets.) Other targets include smuggling tunnels on the Rafah border, the main waste treatment facility in Nussayrat refugee camp (r.c.) in central Gaza, and numerous Hamas facilities and suspected weapons storage facilities across the Strip. With air strikes continuing into the evening, Hamas’s military wing, the Izzeddin al-Qassam Brigades (IQB), declares that it no longer considers itself bound by a unilateral cease-fire that had been in place since the end of Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in 1/2009. Israeli officials discuss the possibility of launching an all-out offensive on Gaza. A Hamas mbr. injured in an 8/15/11 Israeli air strike on Gaza dies. In the West Bank, the IDF patrols in 2 villages nr. Jenin and 1 each nr. Jericho, Qalqilya, and Ramallah. Palestinians (sometimes accompanied by Israeli and international activists) hold weekly nonviolent demonstrations against the separation wall, land confiscations, and settlement expansion in Bil‘in, Kafr Qaddum, Ni‘lin, and al-Nabi Salih. IDF soldiers beat and fire rubber-coated steel bullets, tear gas, and stun grenades at the protesters, injuring 1 Palestinian. In Cairo, 100s of Egyptians angry over Israel’s killing of 3 soldiers in the Sinai on 8/18 gather outside the Israeli emb., demanding Israel’s amb. be expelled. Egypt’s Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF; the interim military leadership) summons the Israeli amb. to demand an apology and call for an investigation into the killings. The Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate for pres., Abdel Moneim Abou el-Fatouh, calls the incident an Israeli act of war, saying the SCAF should abrogate the 1979 peace treaty. (NYT, WP 8/20)

An AMB suicide bomber detonates a device in an ultraorthodox Jewish neighborhood of Beit Israel in West Jerusalem, killing 9 Israelis, including 5 children, and wounding 40. The PA "fully" condemns the attack or any attack "that targets civilians from both sides." The AMB says it picked a bomber fr. Dahaysha r.c. in retaliation for the IDF raids on the camps in Balata, Jenin. In Ramallah, Palestinians hold a spontaneous pro-AMB rally in support of the bombing. Hamas also issues a statement calling the attack legitimate. AMB gunmen also fatally shoot an Israeli policeman in a Jewish settlement outside Jerusalem; an IDF soldier dies of injuries received on 3/1. The IDF continues house-to-house, section-by-section searches in Balata, Jenin r.c. for the 3d day, moving from house to house through the walls. By this evening troops pull out of Jenin r.c. Troops in Balata say that they captured a stash of 6 Qassam-2 rockets, 7 explosive belts for suicide bombings, detained 15 Palestinians, killed 10 Palestinians since the raids began. IDF forces in Jenin r.c. say they have killed 20 Palestinians, arrested 12 during the same period. Elsewhere, an ambulance carrying 3 seriously ill Palestinian infants to a Ramallah intensive care unit is detained by the IDF at a checkpoint for 45 mins., causing Palestinian baby to die; 1 Palestinian is fatally shot by IDF troops nr. Bayt Hanun; a 3d Palestinian dies of injuries received earlier. Clashes are reported in Hebron, Nablus, Qalqilya, Ramallah. The IDF bulldozes Palestinian land nr. Bethlehem. Israeli-Palestinian violence continues to escalate, leaving 2 Palestinians, 1 Israeli civilian. Fatalities include a critically ill Palestinian woman who dies at a checkpoint nr. Ramallah after being held there for 2 hrs. and denied passage to a hospital, and an Israeli fatally shot by a Palestinian in a West Bank market. The PFLP detonates 2 remote-controlled car bombs in Yehud, inside Israel; 4 Israelis are treated for shock. The IDF begins work on a new settlement bypass road nr. Bethlehem; bulldozes 100s of dunams of Palestinian land nr. Gush Etzion where a new settlement enclave was set up 1 mo. ago; confiscates 5 dunams of Silwad land for a helipad serving Ofra settlement; sets up a new checkpoint outside Jinin; tightens roadblocks around Bethlehem, Qalqilya, Tulkarm.
