Occupied Palestine/Israel: Violence erupts against Arabs in Jerusalem after stabbing death of Jewish seminary student on 11/15. Three Palestinians have been charged with the murder [BG 11/18; JP 11/29]. Members of International Federation of Journalists meet with P.M. Shamir to request release of Palestinian journalist Akram Haniyyah and revocation of his expulsion order [FJ 11/21].

Arab World; Syrian Pres. al-Asad denies British and U.S. accusations of Syrian involvement in failed attempt to bomb El Al jet [NYT 11/17].

Other Countries: The Sunday Times (London) reports that then-P.M. Peres ordered Mossad in September 1986 to capture Mordechai Vanunu and return him to Israel [LT 11/16]. (Vanunu is a former nuclear technician who sold secrets related to underground atomic bomb factory in the Negev to The Times.) Pres. Herzog's visit to Singapore draws angry protest from Southeast Asian Muslims [LT 11/17].

Arab World: Two Israeli bombers attack PLO bases near Sidon. Fateh reports heavy casualties and property damage [NYT 11/17]. Witnesses claim 2 PLO members were killed and 5 others wounded in the raid [PI 11/18].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli Deputy P.M. Yitzhak Navon criticizes government's delay in announcing arrest of Mordechai Vanunu, who disappeared in London after telling an English newspaper about Israeli nuclear bomb factory (WP 11/11). Newsweek reports Peres approved Israel's role as middleman in U.S. -Iran arms deal (JP 11/10).

Other Countries: Britain wins support of European Community allies for ban on arms sales to Syriand other limited measures (WP, NYT 11/11). Washington Times publishes interview with French P.M. Chirac in which he says Israel might have set up 4/17 El Al bomb plot to embarrass Syria (NYT 11/10). Pres. Reagan rejects congressional demands that he disclose details of dealings with Iran, citing need for secrecy in obtaining release of American hostages in Lebanon (NYT 11/11).

Arab World: U.S. recalls ambassador from Syria in support of Britain's charges of Syria's involvement in 4/17 attempt to bomb El Al jet in London (WP 10/25).

Military Action

Arab World: Fighting continues between Palestinians and Amal in southern Lebanon: 9 killed, 25 wounded at 'Ayn alHilwah outside Sidon, and Mieh Mieh. Amal says it won control of 3 villages earlier controlled by Palestinians, but Palestinians deny report (NYT, WP, JP 10/26).

Other Countries: In London, Nizar Hindawi is found guilty of plotting to blow up El Al airliner and is sentenced to 45 years in jail. Britain breaks off diplomatic relations with Syria, charging it has "conclusive evidence" that Syrian diplomats and intelligence officers were involved in bomb plot (NYT, WP 10/25).

Military Action

Arab World: Palestinians and Amal resume fighting around Rashidiyyah camp south of Tyre; 16 killed and 29 wounded in 24 hours (WP says 18 killed, 50 wounded) (NYT, WP 10/25).

Occupied Palestine/Israel: P. M. Peres calls Sunday Times report on Israeli nuclear bomb factory "sensationalist" and repeats longstanding Israeli policy on nuclear weapons (i.e., Israel "will not be the first to introduce" them) (WP, NYT 10/7).

Other Countries: In London, trial opens of Nizar Hindawi, Jordanian accused of trying to blow up El Al jumbo jet with 375 passengers on board on 4/17 by giving girlfriend suitcase with bomb inside. Prosecution says Hindawi told British investigators that Syrian military intelligence officers gave him money, passport, explosives, and bomb training (NYT, WP 10/7). Israeli diplomatic mission in Geneva announces name of third Taba arbitrator: Gunnar Lagergren of Sweden. Other two are Pierre Bellet of France and Dietrich Schindler of Switzerland (JP 10/7).

Arab World: Eight Israeli jets attack PFLP training camp and ammunition dump north of Tripoli, ten miles from Syrian border; nine are wounded-seven guerrillas and two civilians. First Israeli bombing activity in north Lebanon in 15 months, but 12th in Lebanon this year (WP, NYT 10/7). Video recordings of three French hostages are received in West Beirut news agency office (NYT 10/7).

Other Countries: Abu Musa faction member Nasir Hasan al-'Ali is arrested after planting bomb at El Al desk at Madrid airport [NYT 6/29; BG 6/28]. Yasir Arafat concludes 9-day tour of 5 African states, including Ghana, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, during which he reportedly discussed opening new PLO offices to bring the total in Africa to 36 [FJ 7/4]. U.S. Asst. Sec. of State Murphy arrives in Stockholm for talks on the M.E. with his Soviet counterpart, Vladimir Polyakov [WP 6/26].

Arab World: Salah Khalaf (Abu Iyad) states 5 Palestinian factions, including 2 opposed to Yasir Arafat, have agreed to attend proposed reconciliation conference in Algiers; sixth group has agreed conditionally, and Algeria is expected to issue invitations in about 2 weeks time [BG 5/10; JP 5/11].

Other Countries: Britain expels 3 Syrian diplomats after their govt. turns down British request to waive diplomatic immunity so that police might question them in connection with last month's attempted bombing of an El Al jet at London's Heathrow Airport [WP, PI 5/11].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Israeli military court orders journalist Hamdi Farraj, 11 other Dheisheh refugee camp residents held since 2/1/85 without trial released on grounds general prosecutor failed to prove charges against them [FJ 1/10].

Arab World: Christian Science Monitor reports King Hussein and Pres. Asad agree to restore diplomatic relations between their countries at ambassadorial level [CSM 1/2]. Egypt and U.S. sign agreement on $140 million in U.S. aid to Egypt, the second installment of $500 million grant approved by Congress last year [JP 1/2]. SLA releases 20 Shi'ite prisoners from Khiam detention center in S. Lebanon as New Year's gesture. (Red Cross has not been allowed to visithe Khiam center) [JP 1/3].

Other Countries: Austrian Interior Ministry states 3 Palestinians who attacked Vienna airport had instructions to take Israeli hostages, hijack El Al plane to Tel Aviv, blow up plane "in or over Tel Aviv" [DT, FT 1/3]. Peter Goldman, director of Americans for a Safe Israel, and Rabbi Avraham Weiss, coordinator of Americans Against Terrorism, announce start of nationwide campaign to remove PLO offices from U.S. [JTA 1/3]. Nadav Safran, director of Harvard U.'s Center for Middle Eastern Studies, will resign post in wake of discovery he accepted $152,000 from CIA for writing book, sponsoring conference on Islamic fundamentalism [DT, LT 1/3].

Occupied Palestine/Israel: Rocket fired from S. Lebanon damages property in Kiryat Shmona [BG 1/3]. Israeli taxi driver is found shot twice in head near Lod (second such incident in 2 days); 4 Palestinians are detained for questioning [FJ 1/10].
